2016 Josephine County Fair

It was fun to see all the busihe Chamber of Commerce rented a booth at the JoCo nesses, and fair goers having a great 2016 Fair this year and will be time. coming back for years to come.

The Chamber took a walk down memory lane several years ago, while helping the Fairground collect pictures for the 100 Year Fair.

We found great information and history from the 1930’s, 40’s, 50’s, 60’s, 70’s & 80’s & 90’s.

What we discovered was that the Chamber has not been to the Fair for over 20 years. So this year we decided to set up a Chamber Fair Booth, with great Josephine County information and member information.

We invited many of our Chamber Members to cover shifts throughout the event. Enjoy the pictures.

H

ow many cavemen do we have in Grants Pass?

Most will say one at Exit 58 off I-5. The truly informed will say three since there are two honoring athletic accomplishments at the Mel-Ingram football field.

But actually there are dozens of cavemen in Grants Pass. Really?

Where are they? They reside in people’s homes. They travel. They have been to Canada. They have toured the Oregon coast. They have played pickleball and participated in air rifle benchrest and pistol silhouette matches. They have dined at fine restaurants.

How can this be you say?

The caveman is a statue. Yes, but he is more. Colene Martin, our Chamber CEO, had an idea. She, her husband Ron and Sonja and Ron Fields were planning a week

in Canada. Colene took a digital picture of our beloved caveman, cut him out, mounted him on a backer board and took him to Canada. She created a Grants Pass Caveman Facebook page and posted the caveman touring Canada.

Since then, the Chamber in partnership with Chamber member Logan Design made several dozen cavemen for sale at the Chamber office. The idea is to promote Grants Pass through the Grants Pass Caveman page.

It’s fun and easy to participate. Simply stop by the Chamber office and buy your caveman and make him a part of your activities. Like Grants Pass Caveman on Facebook and post his adventures.

It really does add a bit more fun to your travels! I love my caveman!

ALICE — The last time Cycle Oregon rode over Bear Camp Road in 1994 riders were happy to survive the climb. And when the 29th annual bicycle extravaganza visits Southern Oregon again in early September, the 2,200 riders will once again climb over 4,000 feet — in the opposite direction, from Gold Beach to Bear Camp Summit about 25 miles north- west of Grants Pass.

A lot of that thigh burning will take place over the course of 17 miles, before riders can glide down to Galice and Indian Mary Park.

“It’s considered one of the more epic days of Cycle Oregon,” said Tara Corbin, community liaison and event manager for Cycle Oregon, of the Bear Camp route. “We haven’t been to southwest Oregon in awhile. It’s a lovely route with lovely overnight communities, with some stunning scenery from the coast to the forest. It’s really special.”

In 2009 Grants Pass hosted a two- night layover, part of that “Mythical State of Jefferson” route that dipped into California and touched Happy Camp and Cave Junction, the Applegate Valley, Jacksonville and Medford.

This year, the Grants Pass & Josephine County Chamber of Commerce has thrown out the welcome mat, since Indian Mary Park and the Rogue River are two big draws. The chamber has been the central contact with Cycle Oregon since November.

Colene Martin, chamber president and CEO, said Cycle Oregon will pay various nonprofits $22,000 for their assistance in handling bags, cleaning, food service, providing towels and other chores.

Kiwanis, the Oregon Cavemen, Soroptimists, Grants Pass Towne Center Association, and Grants Pass Family YMCA are just a few of the groups that will help.

The chamber asked the Grants Pass Museum of Art to “take Grants Pass” to the riders at Indian Mary, 18 miles away. Museum members made about 50 table centerpieces, which they hope to sell.

The Living History Players of the Josephine County Historical Society will perform, with someone portraying Indian Mary, whom the park is named after.

“It’s still generating a lot of energy for the town,” Martin said. “We’re trying to show them Grants Pass, get them to come back.”

Grants Pass made a great impression in 2009, as riders camped for two nights at Riverside Park, and strolled through downtown. Then-mayor Mike Murphy said it was a boon for the town.

Over the years Cycle Oregon participants have pedaled from Selma to Williams, through the Evans Valley, along Riverbanks Road, through Merlin, and on just about every back road in the valley.

For the third time in the history of Cycle Oregon, Glendale High School will

host an overnight stop, and a rest stop will be taken on the lawn of the Wolf Creek Inn. The optional leg will go to Galesville Reservoir east of Azalea.

Sara Wright, Josephine County Parks manager, said Cycle Oregon paid the city to pull potable water from a hydrant in Merlin to haul to Indian Mary, and Clearwater Technologies of Merlin will handle all the waste- water.

“This is about triple the occupancy we’ve ever had in Indian Mary Park,” Wright said. “Cycle Oregon will bring showers, toilets, kitchens, everything. They’ll bring in a small city to the park. It makes it a lot easier for us to say yes.”

The $8,500 paid by Cycle Oregon to use the park for one night will help pay for a new leach field so the county can reopen the RV dump station, Wright said.

A group of local riders will participate.

Jennifer and Link Phillippi, Grants Pass residents who operate Perpetua Forests and the idled Rough & Ready Lumber mill in the Illinois Valley, are entering their fifth Cycle Ore- gon. The entire trip will cover roughly 400 miles.

Other Grants Pass riders entered include Jim Giesen, an emergency room doctor known for pedaling 15 miles to work every day, along with Kirk Chapman, Glenn Gillette, Glenn Wardlaw, Ryan Zaklan, Vicky DiStefano, Chris DiStefano, and Peggy Olson.

“We usually try to ride it when it comes around here,” Jennifer Phillippi said. “I don’t think there’s any group as good as Cycle Oregon with logistics. It’s amazing how they move around a whole town (of riders).

“It’s just fun, and it’s so much work. You feel like you’ve accomplished something at the end of the week.”

Profile on Josephine County Wally Hicks, J.D.

Josephine County Legal Counsel I was born in Eugene in 1976 to a hard-working family on a tight budget. I earned my Eagle Scout badge, and then enlisted in the Marine Corps at age 17. After graduating from the United States Naval Academy (Annapolis) I served as a Marine Officer in the Iraq War and elsewhere. I then enrolled in the University of Oregon School of Law, and immediately became active in student government and community service. Following law school, I prosecuted criminal cases as a Deputy District Attorney for Josephine County. The citizens elected me to serve two terms (4 years total) in the Oregon House of Representatives. Both parties nominated me for both terms. I am extremely grateful to serve the community as the only elected County Legal Counsel in Oregon.

When I’m not working, I am: Spending as much time as possible with my wife of eleven years and our two daughters (ages 5 & 2). I enjoy home improvement projects, year-round barbecuing, swimming at the gym, and learning the guitar.

What excites me about coming to work every day: Interacting with citizens who care passionately about the community, whether they work for the government or pursue other occupations.

Where I would like to see the department in 5 years: To paraphrase a saying about the Marine Corps: this department has been doing so much with so little for so long, that by now it can do practically anything with virtually nothing. Maintaining that level of effectiveness, along with our current customer-service mindset, would be a triumph.

What I’m Reading Now: Seinfeldia: How a Show About Nothing Changed Everything by Jennifer Armstrong. Like most other Gen-X’ers, I remain proudly stuck in the 1990’s.
