Josephine Community Library has moved forward in its Reopening Plan, entering Chapters 4 and 5 and offering computer appointments and limited access to patrons at all four branch facilities in Grants Pass, Illinois Valley, Williams, and Wolf Creek.

The following services are available at all four library branches: •Wednesdays: 30-minute computer appointments between 1pm–4 pm. Registration is required. To register, contact your preferred branch or email info@josephinelibrary.org.

•Thursdays and Fridays: Book drops are open all day.

•Fridays and Saturdays: Curbside pick-up between noon–4 pm.

Hi Members, Election Day is coming quick. This is a big election year both nationally and locally! We strongly encourage you to be an educated voter.

We have all been inundated with the Presidential Race. Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t forget how important our local races are too! To prepare you with reliable, informed voter information, the Grants Pass & Josephine County Chamber of Commerce will be providing full coverage of our Commissioner, Treasurer, City Council, Mayor Races, and a Public Safety Levy educational forum.

Due to COVID, all of the races will be viewed virtually. We have teamed up with some great organizations to bring you coverage.

Our County Candidate forum will be in partnership with the Illinois Valley Community Development Organization. And the City races are in partnership with The Daily Courier.

Questions will be focused on what impacts our business community. We will be addressing concerns our businesses have while also looking forward to future growth.

We know that with COVID impacts and the devasting wildfires we have a lot of other areas taking major focus. Please take the time and educate yourself on the candidates and measures. Each forum will be recorded so individuals can view at their convenience. We will be providing full updates on our website and online social media platforms.

Ballots will be mailed on October 14th. The next few weeks are critical to become educated and make an impact with your vote.

I think everyone will agree that 2020 has not been the year that any of us expected. Logan Design has been fortunate enough to have an amazing team that pulled together during this challenging time.

As the owner I canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t thank my crew enough for stepping up and being so supportive. We are also so thankful for our clients that have counted on us for their marketing and safety needs through this Covid experience.

W

hen Covid first hit, we had a client, Robert Bauer, who came in with a great idea. He wanted to make a few signs for his neighborhood, encouraging others that Everything Will Be Okay.

We asked if it was okay for us to make a few extra, sell them at cost and help get his message out. At this time we have over 600 of these signs printed and out not only in our community but have shipped to California, Washington and even Connecticut. This was the start of our Covid experience in business.

During these last several months we have worked on creating some new markets, expanded our offerings to clients and have focused on building partnerships to help our

local businesses make it through the challenging times. We developed our first set of Senior Signs, to honor our high school graduates, worked with the City of Grants Pass to help promote the Dine in the District opportunity and have become a one-stopshop for signage and safety materials for the community.

We were lucky to be able to remain open throughout the entire time frame. Our staff was a bit limited on-site at times but we discovered the ability for our graphic artists to work off-site. It has reinforced just how critical technology is to our industry and certainly strengthened our team and gave us a renewed passion for what we do. If you are looking for help or creative solutions to some of the challenges with marketing your

business during this difficult time, we would love the opportunity to work with you.

It also became clear to us just how critical supporting our local businesses is as well. We have always purchased as local as possible and we are encouraging others to do the same. We recently started a #KeepItLocal campaign. If anyone brings us a receipt from a local business, we will give them a water bottle or t-shirt and a decal with the Keep It Local logo on it.

While we weather these uncertain times it is critical for us to remain positive and do whatever we can to encourage others. So when we say Everything Will Be Okay, we really believe it!

I

come from a family of proud Scandinavian-British heritage. I’m shaped by an upbringing in the Air Force having lived in 6 states and attended 9 different schools, including two formative high school years in Turkey. My family settled in southwest Washington State in the early 1940s and I have many fond memories of tromping around creeks on my grandparents’ land catching crawdads and frogs and proudly displaying my daily finds to family members who did not share my excitement for my newfound amphibious friends. I attended university in both Oregon and Idaho and studied abroad in England. I started my career in international development with Mercy Corps in Portland and have spent the past 20+ years working in the planning and community development field for cities and counties in southwest Idaho and the Puget Sound area.

The City of Grants Pass Community Development Department is home to the Parks, Building, Planning, Economic Development and Tourism services for the city limits and most of the Urban Growth Boundary.

We have about 20 staff ranging from administrative professionals and planners to building inspectors and parks maintenance experts. Our team reviews and processes building and sign permits, subdivision and site plan applications, and other development-related permits. We staff the Planning Commission, Historical Building & Sites Commission, Parks Advisory Committee, Housing Advisory Committee, Tree Committee, Collaborative Economic Development Committee, Tourism Advisory Committee and the Committee on Public Art.

The Community Development Department front desk is open Monday through Friday from 8:00am to 5:00pm. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re located on the second floor of City Hall at 101 NW A Street.

As is the case with many of our community partners, almost all City-sponsored events are in a long suspension due to Covid-19.

eptember brought an eruption of wildfires in Oregon. Grants Pass was surrounded by devastating wildfires. The Grants Pass community became a central safe zone for evacuees from Phoenix, Talent, Shady Cove, and Illinois Valley.

With so many wildfires in our region, resources were low. As the Slater Fire moved closer to the Illinois Valley our communities of Sun Star and Takilma were in immediate danger. The community rallied our local resources from local fire services, local forestry, logging, and contractors to protect homes.

For evacuees, the community’s response once again was amazing. Battling low resources again, the American Red Cross had 9 shelters across the state of Oregon. To meet the evacuee needs, our churches, Fairgrounds, and community answered the calls setting up shelters and receiving numerous donations including supplies, hot meals, and clothing.

Josephine County has now had all evacuations lifted, but the community continues to gather donations and supplies for our neighbors in Jackson County that lost over 2,300 homes.

Our hearts go out to all of those that have lost so much. We are blessed to live in a community that has come together to get through this devastation that has impacted our whole region and the West coast. Thank you to everyone that has helped!

How do we flow water to fire when there is none?

We bring it. Water is stored in engines, brush rigs, water tenders and portable tanks.

Portable tanks hold 1,000-2,500 gallons of water. Water drafting from tanks allows firefighters to disperse water from the tank while water tenders can continuously fill the tanks.

The most common type of portable is the foldout frame, similar to the one being used at the @ Oregon Caves National Monument.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Good morning! Here is our final morning briefing with Operations Chief Mike Granger. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been a pleasure to serve your communities; thank you so much for your hospitality and stay safe!

Containment lines are continuing to hold on the Slater and Devil fires and firefighters will continue patrol and mop-up efforts. The Slater Fire is now 50% contained and the Devil Fire remains at 20%. The final nightshift concluded at midnight on Friday morning.

The Northern Rockies National Incident Management Team Two will be transitioning out, and the Northwest Incident Management Team 7 will assume command as of 6:00 am Saturday.â&#x20AC;?

Canadian wildland firefighters from Alberta arrived this morning to join fire suppression efforts on the north zone of the Slater & Devil Creek fires.

Canada is one of four countries that has signed an international agreement with the U.S. Forest Service that enable the countries to obtain fire suppression personnel and aircraft from each other during periods of high wildfire activity. n September 9 the Slater fire made a run toward Illinois Valley threatening the area near the California border along Hwy 199, and the Takilma and Holland Loop areas.

Even with resources assisting with the Almeda fire, Josephine County structural departments (Grants Pass Fire, Rural Metro Fire, Williams Rural Fire Department) plus engines from Rogue River FD and Applegate FD, sent two task forces (8 engines and two water tenders) and support personnel, to assist the Illinois Valley Rural Fire Department with structural protection.

Working closely with ODF, USFS and BLM we were able to keep the fire out of the valley with no loss of residential structures.

Two days later the State Fire Marshall sent two additional engine strike teams (from Northern & Eastern Oregon) which enabled us to perform much needed structural defense operations. We even received engines from Minnesota and Utah. Several local departments kept resources there until released a few days ago.

efending a structure against a wildfire takes many tools. And some tools needed to get the job done are so specialized they are not even carried on the fire engine.

So, when firefighters defending homes in the Illinois Valley from the approaching Slater Fire found a need for a special tool, our local Home Depot came to the rescue by donating 16 leaf blowers to crews. Thank you!

By blowing away the light, flammable vegetation like leaves and pine needles, the chances of a floating ember landing and starting a fire are greatly reduced.

has proven to be a year of uncertainty and constant transition. One of areas that has been impacted is childcare. As the schools have changed to virtual distance learning, parents are encountering multiple problems including affordable childcare and access to reliable wi-fi.

YMCA of Grants Pass worked directly with District 7 School District to provide the Out-OfSchool- Fall Program to provide an affordable program to allow children to have a safe place for distance learning while providing art, Science/Technology/Engineering/Mathematics (STEM), and a variety of other activities in the afternoon.

To provide this service to community, YMCA needed the community’s support. The Grants Pass & Josephine County Chamber of Commerce stepped in to make the connection with local businesses. We also reached out to other groups including the Rogue Gateway Rotary Club.

“Childcare is a huge problem for our working parents.

Even before COVID, finding affordable childcare was a problem. The Chamber and business community wanted to help,” said Chamber President & CEO, Josie Molloy.

The Chamber reached out to local businesses with a list of supplies needed and also served as a drop-off site.

In a few weeks, $1,650 in cash donations and about $800 dollars’ worth of supplies were collected.

The Out-Of-School Fall Program is currently serving 53 children.

Fort Vannoy Farms is very excited to announce the celebration of the 11th Annual Fall Festival this month! While the popular attractions such as the Corn Maze, the Cow Train and the Pumpkin Chunker are still happening, sadly a few things will be missing this season due to COVID-19 restrictions. There will NOT be a Farm Kids Play Area, Petting Zoo, Camel Rides or Food Vendors. You are welcome to bring a picnic. Fresh produce, water and soda will be available for purchase. A few pre-packaged treats will be available, Heavenly Nutz will have roasted candy nuts and Sandiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Candiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s will have kettle corn and cotton candy.

The Pumpkin Patch hours are 10:00 am-6:00 pm daily through Halloween and admission is free. The Corn Maze and the Cow Train are $6 each, Pumpkins are .39 cents lb. The Haunted Maze will open October 9th and continue Friday and Saturday nights through the end of the month-tickets are $15.

We ask that all Families that come to visit keep their party size to 10 or less, be prepared to wear a mask for ages 5 and up if social distancing cannot be maintained. We will have hand washing stations and sanitizer throughout the farm.
