W

ith crisp mornings and leaves beginning to change, the Grants Pass & Josephine County Chamber of Commerce is gearing up for a busy fall. This week I would like to highlight just two items that the Chamber is focusing on.

The summer wildfires have severely impacted our community closing roads, endangering our air quality and health, cancelling events, and declining numbers of tourists coming to our area. It has taken a toll on our residents and economy. The Chamber is asking all local businesses to fill out a short seven question survey to help us compile this data.

Through this survey, we are showing how our local businesses have been impacted financially, drop in sales and income, and the long-term effects and damages on our businesses. We will be sharing this data with our local, state and federal officials.

Please share the survey with all local businesses in our county so we can get an accurate representation of the entire impact. Here is the link.

Recently Josephine County was declared a disaster area with SBA assistance available. Small businesses may apply for federal disaster loans. You can apply online here or from the link on the Chamber of Commerce website.

Another area we are focusing on is educating voters before the November 6 general election. The Grants Pass & Josephine County Chamber of Commerce in partnership with the Daily Courier will host a Candidate Forum .

The Candidate Forum is Tuesday, October 16th, 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at the Anne Basker Auditorium located at 500 NW 6th St. We will have candidates running for County Commissioner and Sheriff.

We will be taking questions from the audience. This is a free event, and all are encouraged to attend.

And as a final thought, in addition to our survey and the candidate forum, we have several other events coming this month to network and stay involved.

Jenkins, (916) 735-1500, Richard.Jenkins@sba.gov Release Number: OR 15700-01 Follow us on Twitter, Facebook, Blogs & Instagram SBA Offers Disaster Assistance to Oregon Small Businesses Economically Impacted by Wildfires SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The U.S. Small Business Administration is offering low-interest federal disaster loans for working capital to small businesses economically impacted by wildfires beginning July 15, 2018, SBA Administrator Linda McMahon announced today. SBA acted under its own authority to declare a disaster following a request received from Gov. Kate Brown on Sept. 25, 2018.

The disaster declaration makes SBA assistance available in Curry, Deschutes, Douglas, Jackson, Josephine, Klamath, Lake and Lane counties in Oregon; and Del Norte, Modoc and Siskiyou counties in California.

“SBA is strongly committed to providing the most effective and customer-focused response possible to assist Oregon’s small businesses with federal disaster loans. We will be swift in our efforts to help these small businesses recover from the financial impacts of this disaster,” said Administrator McMahon.

“Small, nonfarm businesses, small agricultural cooperatives, small businesses engaged in aquaculture and most private nonprofit organizations of any size may qualify for Economic Injury Disaster Loans of up to $2 million to help meet financial obligations and operating expenses which could have been met had the disaster not occurred,”

said Director Tanya N. Garfield of SBA’s Disaster Field Operations Center-West.

“These loans may be used to pay fixed debts, payroll, accounts payable and other bills that can’t be paid because of the disaster’s impact. Disaster loans can provide vital economic assistance to small businesses to help overcome the temporary loss of revenue they are experiencing,” Garfield added.

Eligibility is based on the financial impact of the disaster only and not on any actual property damage. These loans have an interest rate of 3.61 percent for small businesses and 2.5 percent for private nonprofit organizations with terms up to 30 years and are restricted to small businesses without the financial ability to offset the adverse impact without hardship.

The Klamath Falls Small Business Development Center is offering free, personalized counseling to help affected businesses in their recovery.

RCC Celebrates Opening Of New High Tech Center

ogue Community College recently opened it's newest building at the TableRock Campus ~ The High Tech Center.

The $4.2 million, 11,800 square -foot center will be a regional cornerstone for high technology training in manufacturing, welding, engineering, mechatronics and other advanced skills.

The flexible space is designed to promote skills-based learning with the newest technology. It also contains a “makerspace” that will facilitate col-

laborative learning among students, the community and business partners.

Even though approximately 10,000 Americans retire each day, there is an increasing number of employees opting to stay in the workforce longer than previously contemplated. In response, employers need to be strategic in not just identifying job skills and institutional knowledge that must be preserved and passed-down, but also in identifying and cultivating employees which they deem important to the continued success of their organizations.

Relatedly, everyone from the president of an organization down to the first level supervisors need to understand how state and federal age discrimination laws shape the way that they can and should have conversations with employees about their plans for retirement.

Community Volunteers

JCF - Josephine County Foundation

T

he Josephine County Foundation is serving the community and creating a new generation of leaders! From serving at community events such as Winterfest at the Bear Hotel, the Annual Kids Care Fair, Duck Scrub and Empty Bowls to putting on service projects of their own such the Josephine County Foundation is making our community a healthier, happier, and more vibrant place to live.

Last year alone, JCF hosted a 103 mile relay run to prevent bullying in high schools, gave out $23,000 in grants to local teachers to improve their classrooms, hosted a free Vision Clinic for members of the community to receive free glasses and eye exams and many more projects like these.

Not only do JCF students create community service projects and volunteer locally, they also participate in leadership training and development curriculum that extends beyond the standard school curriculum.

This year, JCF is making big changes. We are taking our student leadership training to the next level with even more access to local and global business experts. The students will be learning from the experts about advertising, branding, marketing, logo design, digital strategy and so much more. We are hoping for more community involvement going forward in our training and education.

Not only are we extending our training, but we are considering a full name change and

re-brand (pending board approval) this year. It's exciting for this years' crop of students to have this opportunity. The level and access that the students have to this training and experience will give them a huge advantage as they move forward in their future education and employment.

We invite the community to get involved with our students. You can donate your time or money. You can become a full-fledged sponsor or be a part of the leadership training and development. These students are our future community leaders.

Guzzo Family Vineyard is a boutique winery and tasting room established in 2012 in Murphy Oregon. This small Italian style vineyard is located on the edge of the Applegate Valley AVA producing the first small batches of GFV reserve dessert wines in 2017. The majority of our grapes are purchased from select local Applegate Valley and Rogue Valley growers for our other varietals.

Visit us at our new GFV Tasting room open now on the Applegate Valley AVA off the 238 HWY just outside of Grants Pass city limits @ 1386 Murphy Creek Rd, Grants Pass Oregon. You can also find our wines in local restaurants and specialty & gourmet food stores. We look forward to serving you!
