ALICE — Their faces may have been red, their legs a bit wobbly, but there were plenty of smiles Thursday[Sept 15th] among the nearly 2,200 cyclists riding in the 29th annual Cycle Oregon. The seven-day, 400-mile journey began in Myrtle Creek, where it will end on Saturday. y husband and I moved to Grants Pass from California in 2002. We wanted to raise our daughter here and be close to family. We love the Rogue Valley! We are so fortunate to live in such a beautiful place! I met Ray, the owner of SOS Alarm in 2004 and he offered me a sales position. I really enjoy working for a family owned business instead of a large corporation--twelve years later, I still love my job!

I work with wonderful people at a top notch company installing state of the art alarm and surveillance equipment. It’s been incredible to see how technology continues to advance. I have always enjoyed working with people and I really enjoy helping them solve their security challenges.

I am also proud to be a member of the Southern Oregon Safety Alliance. I have been attending Greeters meetings for twelve years. I have gained some wonderful working relationships as well as great friendships. SOS Alarm has been a Chamber member for decades because “The Chamber works”!

Community Volunteers

RSVP

(Retired Senior Volunteer Program) is a part of Senior Corps.

Senior Corps is a United States government agency under the authority of the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS).

Its stated mission is to provide aid to senior citizens in communities while promoting a sense of community.

RSVP grew out of the Older Americans Act of 1965 nationally and was introduced to Josephine County in the late 70’s. RSVP is America’s largest volunteer network for people 55 and over, with more than 300,000 volunteers tackling issues in communities nationwide such as: Access to Care, Access to Food, Financial Literacy, supporting Veterans and Military, education, and community needs in general. RSVP shows how you can apply skill and wisdom that has been acquired through a life and make a positive difference in the lives of others.

Here is just a snapshot of what our volunteers accomplish: • SHIBA Volunteers counseled 767 Community members about Medicare and Prescription Assistance • AARP Tax aide volunteers performed 2, 776 tax returns equaling $3,416,515.00 in tax refunds • RSVP VET Team assisted in housing 68 Homeless Veterans.

• The UCAN Knitting ladies provided over 2000 hats and 85 scarfs for the winter time for various age groups.

• RAMP volunteers helped to build 5 ramps during the summer and made it possible for those clients to gain more independence and mobility.

• Volunteers in the rural area of Illinois Valley performed a variety of services such as: instructional community classes, meals to the elderly, and provides an economical 2nd hand shopping selection.

The heart of volunteerism is demonstrated effectively through all of our 429 RSVP volunteers and 5 Senior Companions, contributing over 78,000 hours of organized volunteer impact, representing a gift of volunteerism and human effort valued at over $1,725,000 million to our community in the last year.

RSVP shows how you can apply skill and wisdom that has been acquired through a life and make a positive difference in the lives of others!

Profile on Josephine County Connie Roach Josephine County Assessor Born & raised in Detroit, Michigan, spent 10 years in California before heading to Grants Pass in 1982. I worked at the Grants Pass YMCA for 10 years. Then, various positions in the Assessor’s Office. I was first elected as Assessor in 2008 & my 3rd term starts in Jan. 2017.

Advice for young people entering in your field: The real estate market, construction, transfer deeds, legal descriptions, maintaining tax lot maps and understanding Oregon property tax laws are all elements we deal with on a daily basis. An aptitude for detail is more important than knowing any of the above – those elements can be learned with the right attitude. Any young person who thinks they might be interested in pursuing a career in property assessment is welcome to call our office and talk to us.

Business Role Model: My predecessor, Mike Schneyder Why: He taught me the right and honorable way to show respect and fairness to taxpayers & taxing districts while always asking “what does the law say”.

What excites me about coming to work every day: is knowing I am doing my best to make sure our taxpayers & taxing districts are treated right.

When I’m not working: I am playing computer jigsaw puzzles, spending time on the treadmill, in the garden, or showing off Oregon when family and friends come to visit.

Where I would like to see the department in 5 years: I would like to see us utilizing newer technology and a paperless office for greater efficiency, allowing staff to concentrate on our core mission.

All three riders were assessed by medics, and none appeared to have critical injuries. However, one rider was transported by AMR, and the condition of that person was not available this morning.

Chamber P President and CEO Colene Martin s said Cycle Oregon will pay various n nonprofi t groups $22,000 for their assista assistance in handling bags, cleaning, s food service, providing towels and other h chores.

Kiwanis, the Oregon Cavemen, Soroptimists, Grants Pass Towne Center Association, and Grants Pass Family YMCA are just a few of the groups that helped.

Cycle Oregon is also paying $8,500 to use Indian Mary Park for one night, which will help pay for a new leach field so the county can reopen the RV dump station.

Today riders will gear up for a ride to Glendale, where they will stay the night at Glendale High School. On Saturday, the ride returns to where it started in Myrtle Creek.

That group, Mid Rogue Independent Physician Association (IPA), now represents more than 70 physician shareholders in private practice in Josephine County and Rogue River in Jackson County. The 14th annual Art Along the Rogue will be happening on October 8th and 9th this year with a kick off concert by Ben Rice on the 7th during First Friday Live.

The theme this year is “Legends” as a tribute to all the great musicians, ar sts and other influen al role models that have inspired us over the years. Over 30 ar sts of all skill levels will come out to share their talents with us as they transform an asphalt street into an eyepopping stream of pictures.

Our featured ar sts this year include Southern Oregon ar st Jessilyn Brinkerhoff and Southern California ar sts Ann Hefferman and Beth Ramone. For those ar sts out there who are not signed up but s ll want to draw, there will be 2’x2’ squares for children to fill and 4’x’4 squares for more ambi ous ar sts. a ernoon.
