e are slowly creeping into the Holiday Season! Ready or not, here we go! My family and I participated in some of the Halloween activities this past weekend. One of the events was a Trunk or Treat sponsored by our amazing local businesses. Each of them decorated an area and handed out tons of candy to thousands of children. As we visited each spot with my kids, it was so fun as I knew all the owners and employees handing out candy. These small business owners are the ones that show up to sponsor children’s events, youth programs, community projects and more. They also volunteer a lot of time! As consumers during the holiday season, it is our turn to give back to our local companies. Let’s support our small, local businesses and keep dollars local. There are so many ways to support our businesses! n September 1st 2018 it all began when my wife Jennifer and I took over the helm of the office of Michael Schwartz, OD. Even with my 14 years of experience there were some big shoes to fill; 42 years of providing amazing care to this community. ur local high schools are ramping up their Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs to prepare students for evolving industries and future careers. Grants Pass High School and Three Rivers School District programs are featured below. Both high schools are actively seeking partnerships with local businesses, community members and organizations to enhance student learning experiences. Grants Pass High School The new Automotive Program provides students comprehensive training in automotive mechanics and technology. Students are gaining hands-on experience in diagnosing and repairing vehicles, ensuring they are well-prepared for the rapidly evolving automotive industry. The Engineering Program now includes electronics courses alongside robotics and mechanical design. This reimagined program teaches students to assemble and operate both analog and digital electronic equipment. Additionally, GPHS offers numerous other CTE programs, each tailored to specific career pathways. The Computer Science Pathway introduces students to the world of programming and cybersecurity, while the Culinary Arts Pathway provides students with restaurant and catering experience and the opportunity to receive National Restaurant Association certifications. The Early Childhood Education (ECE) Pathway consistently attracts aspiring childcare providers and educators. Students have the opportunity to earn college credit, an Early Childhood Basic Certificate through Rogue Community College, and on-the-job experience working with preschool-aged children in our on-campus lab school. Students in our Metals Program consistently shine at state and national competitions. They obtain American Welding Society (AWS) qualifications in multiple welding techniques and have the chance to learn design, CNC plasma cutting, and earn their forklift certification. In our woods program, students learn construction skills and build cabinets, furniture, and guitars. The Health Science Pathway teaches basic to advanced medical skills and certification opportunities. The Marketing and Business pathway sparks interest in entrepreneurship and marketing in the fashion, sports, entertainment, and digital industries. Three Rivers School District (TRSD) TRSD is also proud to offer a diverse range of CTE programs. They also just launched College Connect, a collaborative effort between TRSD and RCC. This exciting program enables eligible 11th and 12th-grade students to attend RCC classes in-person every Friday morning, providing them with a unique opportunity to earn college credits and explore a diverse range of academic and career pathways. Manufacturing Technology -The CTE program in manufacturing technology covers metalwork, welding, and wood craftsmanship. Students gain hands-on experience in working with different materials, mastering techniques that are essential in industries such as construction, engineering, and manufacturing. Early Childhood and Early Education - The district’s Early Childhood program provides students with field experience and practicum opportunities in the world of childcare and education. This program is ideal for those interested in pursuing careers as teachers, childcare providers, or child development specialists. Health Sciences - CTE offerings in Health Sciences encompass a wide range of options, including sports medicine and exploration of healthcare occupations. Students learn about the human body, medical terminology, and various healthcare career pathways. Agriculture - The agriculture program includes horticulture, animal science, plant science, and veterinary science. Students develop essential skills in farming, animal husbandry, and plant cultivation, preparing them for careers in agriculture, environmental science, and more. Automotive Technology - The district offers automotive technology programs that cover power mechanics and advanced power mechanics. Students gain practical knowledge of vehicle maintenance and repair, setting them on a path toward careers in the automotive industry. The Young Professionals Network is for young professionals in the target age range of 18-45 who are looking for networking opportunities with other young professionals, connections to the community and business leaders, community engagement, and professional development. The network holds monthly luncheons, quarterly socials, and community service projects.

For the month of October, our Young Professionals had the pleasure of hearing Terry Hopkins of ORLA and Steam Distilling speak on Hospitality. Such an engaging presentation! Terry spoke about his humble beginnings as a dishwasher at 14 to earn money for a car. How he worked through all the positions possible in a restaurant. While attending college in pursuit of a degree in engineering, Terry continued to work in the service industry. It wasn’t until he did a job shadow for the engineering position, he was set to take that it occurred to him, “that job didn’t look like much fun!” He said he could not imagine himself doing it for a week let alone 30 years. Just like that, he quit school and made the decision to take a different path. While many have asked “when are you going to get a real job?” Terry has made a successful career out of doing what he loves. His determination and strong work ethic allotted him countless opportunities. He says for him, “so many lessons were learned around a table.” With retirement on the horizon, being fully involved in this community is clearly a path Terry is committed to. To kick off November, YPN will be meeting at Weekend Beer Company for our Quarterly Adopt-A-Street Clean-Up on Thursday, November 2nd, at 5:15pm. This program is so rewarding and comes with a FREE beverage following the clean-up. On the November 14th we will be heading out to RCC’S Small Business Development Center for Professional Development.
