Dear Members,

On the May 18th special election ballot, the Grants Pass Public Safety Levy is up for renewal. The Grants Pass & Josephine County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors endorses the three-year tax levy to support our Police, Fire, Emergency Services, and Dispatch. More than ever these services are critical to our community to grow and prosper.

With the $1.79 rate, Grants Pass will be able to maintain service levels to keep our community safe.

We must have service 365 days- 24 hours to keep our community safe.

As we may once again find ourselves in a horrific wildfire season, we need adequate and advanced equipment and personnel to fight these disasters. 2020 has shown us that we must not let our guard down and prepare for the future.

The Grants Pass & Josephine County Chamber of Commerce mission is to support and promote local commerce through communication, advocacy, and partnerships. We are a voice for our business community advocating for their needs. One of these critical partnerships is our first responders that have been keeping our community and businesses safe. We ask the community to vote yes for the Grants Pass Public Safety Levy Measure. Please accept this as our official support. 2021 Youth of the Year - Meet Elijah L.

Elijah has been an active member of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Rogue Valley for over 5 years and is currently a sophomore at Grants Pass High School.

As a Club Member, Elijah assisted in the organization and implementation of many community service projects and has actively participated in Club Programming. He represented BGCRV during a Leadership Conference for Youth Leaders and Drug Prevention. Elijah credits his love of basketball, his passion for leadership, and his enthusiasm for helping others to the Club.

He is proud to represent Boys & Girls Clubs of the Rogue Valley, and BGCRV is so honored to have him represent the Club as Youth of the Year! Congratulations Elijah!

BUT, there are permits that are out of our control that allow us to run many pieces of our event.

Grants Pass High School Band Receives 2021 Heart of the Arts Award GPHS band recognized for its “heart” in the aftermath of the Almeda Fire

GRANTS PASS, Ore. – Directors Lewis Norfleet, Jeremy Sutton, and the Grants Pass High School Band have been awarded a 2021 “National High School Heart of the Arts Award” by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS).

This award seeks to recognize individuals or groups who exemplify the ideals of the positive heart of the arts that represent the core mission of education-based activities. The Grants Pass High School Band was nominated for the initiative students took to help their fellow musicians in Phoenix, following the devastating Almeda Fire on September 8, 2020.

“We decided to share photos of the damage in the Phoenix community with our students,” Band Director Lewis Norfleet writes. “We felt it was an important teaching moment, one that superseded our music class curriculum.

We shared the photos and let the students speak. They immediately wanted to help.”

The band’s student leadership team met later that day and came up with a plan to make a care package for every individual student in the Phoenix High School Band. The two schools compete annually in the Pride of the Northwest (PNW) marching band competition in Grants Pass.

“They wanted to let the Phoenix students know that they each mattered and that their friends in GP were thinking of them. What transpired after that was very special,” Norfleet said.

In a letter, Phoenix High School Assistant Principal Dave Ehrhardt wrote, “In the aftermath of the fires, many groups reached out to provide support to the students and staff of the Phoenix-Talent School District. One of the first groups we heard from was the Grants Pass High School Band. A few days later, an armada of vehicles from Grants Pass was at our school. They brought each of our students multiple gift bags and a wide variety of thoughtful items. Even more importantly, they brought them hope and the idea that someone truly cared about them in the midst of this tragedy.”

“We are proud of our students for their awareness of what people in their community were experiencing and their enthusiasm for wanting to help however they could,” Norfleet says. “It will be quite the celebration when the Phoenix band returns to the field at PNW (hopefully in 2021!), and we have a chance to cheer them on.”

The Grants Pass & Josephine County Chamber of Commerce will be hosting the first ever Lemonade Day! Lemonade Day is a community-wide educational program that provides youth with the opportunity to learn how to start, own and operate their first business…a lemonade stand.

For these young entrepreneurs, the experience of setting a goal, creating a business plan, executing their plan, and evaluating their results sparks an explosion of new confidence in their abilities, and for many, a new vision of possibilities for the future.

CALL FOR BUSINESSES: We are looking for businesses to sponsor a Lemonade Stand in front of their business.
