embership in the chamber is much more than a plaque on the wall, the fulfillment of a sense of civil obligation, or the means to generate new business. Rather, membership represents a commitment to the continued prosperity of Josephine County’s economy. The Grants Pass & Josephine County Chamber of Commerce is the catalyst that enables businesses to accomplish collectively what no one business could do alone. A strong united effort gives a voice to members. Tourism, service, retail and manufacturing each contibute to our business community. Josephine County Chamber of Commerce ~ www.grantspasschamber.org
“The Oregon Cavemen, claiming to be the direct de scendants of the Neanderthal Man of ancient times, incorporated as a unit in October 1922, in a ceremony held secretly in the depths of the Oregon Cavestheir claimed homeland, and now a national monument. The group of Cavemen were composed of business and professional men, (most of the them members of the Commercial Club and later the Chamber of Commerce), back then there were about fifty in active membership. They appeared at the opening of the Golden Gate Bridge, a Broadway Show, and the Bay Area’s Treasure Island Exposition, just to mention a few.
The Cavemen, dressed in animal skins, wearing horsehair wigs, buck teeth, and “big horns” run rampant in parades and gatherings of the public. Usually, they will have their rustic cage in which they imprison their victims and display them for the public to see. They are always on hand for a prank or a joke to be played on an important personality visiting in Grants Pass or elsewhere.
Spreading good will and tourist information, they appear at openings of national and local interest alike. Known for their jovial antics and unorthodox welcomes, they are a cheerful spectacle and anticipated attendee to most notable events and auspicious celebrations -- leaving a lasting impression on even the youngest of visitors to the “Caveman Domain.”
Their main purpose as an organization is to publicize Grants Pass and the surrounding area and to attract tourists and new residents by showing them what a good time is to be had here. Their “ritual” includes orientation of the members in the geographical and scenic features of the Caveman Domain, instructions in the Cavemen “tactics” of greeting visitors (including presentation of an inscribed chamois). There are also “secret rites” of initiation.
The Cavemen have never been inhibited and thousands of pictures appearing in papers across the country prove they let their hair down literally and figu-
ratively. As for formalities and amenities, Grants Pass Cavemen make their own rules as they go along, always calculated for the most fun and the best gag at the moment. With each new trick and each visit to a new area, they spread the good word for Grants Pass and Josephine County, calling everyone to come and see the Rogue River Valley where people are enjoying life to the fullest.” (adapted from The Grants Pass Active Club, Boatnik.com and The Oregon Cavemen sign)
Since 1952, the Cavemen have been a committee of the Grants Pass Active Club. Carrying on the 102 year old tradition, the Cavemen continue to frequent the GP Active Club’s annual fundraising event, Boatnik, celebrating it’s 65th anniversary this Memorial Day Weekend and will be seen sporadically throughout the year around Grants Pass.
The Caveman story has been told numerous times for over 100 years-- as they have greeted and embraced people from all over the world. Whether or not you have an affinity for the big guy who lives up by the Grants Pass & Josephine County Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center or his brother, Big Mo who stands watch by Caveman Bridge, or their rambunctious and scantily fur-clad minions... Our community will be forever grateful for their fun-loving spirit and gregarious effort to bring special recognition to our national monument and community.
During this 100 year Anniversary of the Chamber, we celebrate with them in their 65th year of support and service to our youth and thank them for continuing the Oregon Cavemen tradition as the World’s Most Unique, and beloved Booster Club... UGH!

Distinctive from land to glass Applegate wineries tastings at this Tickets include a wine glass.
An AVA all of its own. Rivers, lakes, vistas, organic farms, lavender and 18 oustanding wineries.
Inside our small wineries, you’re bound to meet the winemaker. They can tell you about their singular wines and vineyards-- how the Tempranillo varieties grow best in silty-loam soil, how Viognier thrives in river-wash, or how Syrah ripens best on the upland benches. They may tell you about the biodynamic and regenerative farming techniques that enrich their vineyards. You might even hear the story of how they found their way to the Applegate Valley.
In the end, a tour of Applegate Wine Country will deepen your understanding of wine’s relationship to the soil, or as the French put it ‘terroir.’
Every May and November, Applegate wineries host delectable eats and wine tastings at this self-paced wine tour event. Tickets include a commemorative Wine Trail wine glass.

Our Young Professionals had a great time visiting the Glass Forge Studio for the Quarterly Social. While the venue was a smidge on the warm side, the demonstration, and the dance between glass artisans as they create was completely mesmerizing. Lee’s knowledge and passion for his craft was evident in the way he described the process that goes into the pieces they create along with the history and folklore around the art form. It was a treat to hear from Founder, Master Artisan, Entrepreneur, Artisan and Glass Cook, Lee Wassink as he shared his wealth of knowledge of the art of glass blowing. He and his Co-Founder and fellow Master Glass Blower, Nathan Sheafor lit the Forges furnaces on Memorial Day 1998. Since that day they and their talented team continue to crank out amazing works of art. Lee and his team’s talents can be discovered spread along the Oregon Coast in the form of glass floats for the “Finders Keepers” treasure hunt. Fun fact: Glass Forge is an annual stop for Tap Walk and Wine Stroll!
The month May, we will be performing our quarterly trash cleanup for the Adopt A Street Program and also hosting Professional Development with Project Youth+. For event information and registration, please visit our Community Calendar at www.grantspasschamber.org.
