From the desk of the President & CEO

Hi Members, Good news is on the horizon! We are slowly moving forward to reopening within in person meetings and events. For the Chamber, we are refocusing our attention on our usual duties while also helping our community recover. As most industries, we have also altered our way of doing business. With all of the scenarios we have encountered, we have focused on the positive outcomes and learned that we can implement new strategies to improve efficiency. We are excited to share in this newsletter, the Oregon Caves reopening, ribbon cuttings, celebrations, and our announcement of some exciting events including Lemonade Day, Wine Stroll, and Greeters back in person! We are also seeing a lot of start ups and new members join the Chamber. Our Visitor Center is bustling with people from other states eager to get back to traveling and enjoy what our community has to offer. As we are all getting back into the routine of open doors, full capacity, and customers, we know that some of the COVID impacts are still here. Our businesses are still struggling with getting a full qualified workforce, our supply chains are still not caught up, and unfortunately a lot of items have also increased in costs. We ask our entire community to please be patient and kind to our businesses, event planners, and community as we are all transitioning. As we reopen, please reach out to us if we can help in anyway!

Hello Friends…..

Support for the Galice Resort is Appreciated: https://gofund.me/a829e8be

We have "Galice Trading Post" set up and ready to handle lodging, shuttles, and your favorite t-shirt sales. We are able to accept cash only at this time. Thank you for your encouragement, prayers, and for standing strong with us.

Thank you to everyone that has reached out, prayed, and who have supported the Galice Resort through the last 41 years. We wouldn’t be here without you! Galice Resort is the Rogue River area’s most centralized, most recognized resort. For 41 years, the Thomason family has offered guests the best in Rogue River lodging, dining, entertainment, rafting, rentals, shuttles and much more. On the morning of June 8th the Galice Resort was part of a tragic fire that swept across the entire restaurant, bar, deck, and gift shop. {Lodging was not affected} It was a complete loss to the resort by the river. “It went so quickly” - Debbie We are raising these funds to help support Debbie and MaryLou through this time of loss. Insurance will cover the structure itself. However there are other expenses that are arising that will not be covered by insurance. Thank you so much for all your support and donations. Please continue to pray for healing for the family at this time.

Located near the intersection of Galice Road and Galice Access Road the marker was officially unveiled during a ceremony on Saturday morning, June 12th at 10:00am which included an official Chamber of Commerce Ribbon Cutting by Chamber Ambassadors, many locals and the “Clampers”. The monument pays tribute to the Battle of Skull Bar that took place nearby during the Rogue River Wars. The inscription is sandblasted into stone because the group’s earlier metal plaques were often stolen for scrap metal. Historical Monument Markers are created by our local fraternal organization E CLampus Vitus dedicated to the preservation of the heritage of the American West, especially the history of the Mother Lode and gold mining regions of the area. There are chapters in California, Nevada, Arizona, Colorado, Utah, Washington, Idaho, Oregon, Montana and Outposts in other western states. Members call themselves “Clampers”. The plaque tells the story of a battle between Indigenous people from various bands commonly grouped as the Rogue River Indians and about 40 Galice miners, plus Umpqua Joe, part of the Umpqua tribe and his wife, both of whom helped the miners. Together they built two log houses and a corral on the bar and fortified it. The battle that ensued, the result of growing friction between Native Americans and settlers, was one of several in 185556 now called the Rogue River Wars. In the early morning of October 17, 1855, the Native Americans led by Cholcultah Chief George and Chief Lympe began returning fire with exchanges continuing until 9pm”, the plaque reads. Overnight the wounded were tended to, and further fortifications were made. Joe’s wife interpreted as a new rush was made on the small fort. The fort held and the force moved on, ultimately leaving survivors with five dead and 11 wounded, including Joe. The total number of Indigenous deaths remains unknown. The ”Clampers” have dedicated 25 Historical Markers with History of Umpqua Joe Plaque Dedications since 2006.

The Grants Pass & Josephine County Chamber of Commerce will be hosting the first ever Lemonade Day! Lemonade Day is a community-wide educational program that provides youth with the opportunity to learn how to start, own and operate their first business…a lemonade stand. Children in grades 3-5 will be selling their final product on August 20th from 3:00 – 6:00 p.m. The Grants Pass & Josephine County Chamber of Commerce is partnering with the YMCA and the Boys & Girls Club of the Rogue Valley to make this happen! For these young entrepreneurs, the experience of setting a goal, creating a business plan, executing their plan, and evaluating their results sparks an explosion of new confidence in their abilities, and for many, a new vision of possibilities for the future. CALL FOR BUSINESSES: We are looking for businesses to host a Lemonade Stand in front of their business. If you have a high traffic area and would like to host a stand on August 20th, please call Josie Molloy at 541-956-4100 or email jmolloy@grantspasschamber.org. We need 30 locations across town.
