The History of America’s Independence Day

http://www.pbs.org/a-capitol-fourth/history/history-independence-day/ "Taxation without representation!" was the battle cry in America’s 13 Colonies, which were forced to pay taxes to England's King George III despite having no representation in the British Parliament.

As dissatisfaction grew, British troops were sent in to quell the early movement toward rebellion. Repeated attempts by the Colonists to resolve the crisis without military conflict proved fruitless.

On June 11, 1776, the Colonies' Second Continental Congress met in Philadelphia and formed a committee whose express purpose was drafting a document that would formally sever their ties with Great Britain. The committee included Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, Roger Sherman and Robert R. Livingston. Jefferson, who was considered the strongest and most eloquent writer, crafted the original draft document. A total of 86 changes were made to his draft and the Continental Congress officially adopted the final version on July 4, 1776.

The following day, copies of the Declaration of Independence were distributed, and on July 6, The Pennsylvania Evening Post became the first newspaper to print the extraordinary document. The Declaration of Independence has since become our nation's most cherished symbol of liberty.

Bonfires and Illuminations On July 8, 1776, the first public readings of the Declaration were held in Philadelphia's Independence Square to the ringing of bells and band music. One year later, on July 4, 1777, Philadelphia marked Independence Day by adjourning Congress and celebrating with bonfires, bells and fireworks.

The custom eventually spread to other towns, both large and small, where the day was marked with processions, oratory, picnics, contests, games, military displays and fireworks. Observations throughout the nation became even more common at the end of the War of 1812 with Great Britain.

In June of 1826, Thomas Jefferson sent a letter to Roger C. Weightman, declining an invitation to come to Washington, D.C. to help celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.

It was the last letter that Jefferson, who was gravely ill, ever wrote. In it, Jefferson says of the document:

blessings and security of self-government. That form, which we have substituted, restores the free right to the unbounded exercise of reason and freedom of opinion. All eyes are opened, or opening, to the rights of man. ...For ourselves, let the annual return of this day forever refresh our recollections of these rights, and an undiminished devotion to them."

- Thomas Jefferson June 24, 1826 Monticello Congress established Independence Day as a holiday in 1870, and in 1938 Congress reaffirmed it as a paid holiday for federal employees. Today, communities across the nation mark this major midsummer holiday with parades, firework displays, picnics and performances of "The StarSpangled Banner" and marches by John Philip Sousa.

SHOES FOR KIDS FUNDRAISING The Fruitdale Grange #379 launched the “Shoes for Kids” program and fundraiser to supply new shoes to the needy children in our community for the 2018-19 school year.

Each child will receive a pre-loaded gift card to purchase shoes for school.

In 2015, we were able to help 188 children have new shoes to start school.

And in 2016 the community helped 260 kids and in 2017 almost 300!

The need is enormous and we are looking to help even more in 2018!

Most Patriotic City in Oregon Grants Pass receives Insurify’s “Most Patriotic Cities Award” for the State of Oregon May 21st, 2018

M

ilitary service is an American tradition: Since the founding of the Continental Army in 1775, patriotic Americans have been serving the country in uniform, both in peacetime and at war.

This tradition of service comes at a high cost, however—more than one million Americans have died during wartime since the country’s founding.

Recent data puts the size of the U.S. Military, including active and reserve forces, at just over 2 million personnel, a number that represents a smaller slice of the American population than at any other time in recent history. As the size of our military is decreasing, so too is the count of living veterans. As of 2017 only 558,000 of the 16 million Americans who served in World War II were still alive.

As a result of the end of the draft in 1973, Americans with personal or family ties to the military have become more unevenly distributed

across the nation. Some towns and cities have enduring military traditions, while others are home to relatively few current or former service members.

To recognize those who have served our country, the data scientists at Insurify set out to identify the most patriotic communities in each state.

According to our data, these communities are home to the highest percentage of individuals who are currently serving in the military or identify themselves as veterans. Some may not surprise you—towns located outside of military bases naturally have a higher representation of current and former service members—while others represent pockets of patriotism that may be overlooked. However all deserve to be saluted for their contributions to the national defense.

Selection Process for Insurify’s 2018 Most Patriotic Cities Award

To determine the most patriotic community in each state, Insurify analyzed over nine hundred thousand completed auto insurance applications that indicated whether any individual named on the policy was a current or former service member. A filter was then applied to isolate communities with over 150 driver applicants. The resulting data set was analyzed to determine the percentage of local residents who identify as current military or veteran, and then the top-ranking city in each state was identified. In the eyes of the Insurify team, it is these communities that deserve to be recognized as the most patriotic cities in America.

2018 Duck Derby Sales Start July 7th

Ducks for the annual Rotary Duck Derby to help local children and families go up for “adoption” Saturday, July 7th at the Downtown Growers Market in Grants Pass.

Starting Monday, July 9th more than 30 sites in Josephine County will sell duck adoptions for $10.00 each. They include branches of Rogue Credit Union and Umpqua Bank, the five new car dealers in Grants Pass, KAJO and the Daily Courier.

The Rotary Duck Derby, held by the four Rotary Clubs in Josephine County, has become one of Josephine County’s most important fundraising efforts, bringing in more than $1.4 million since 2003.
