Why does a small community in Oregon have a giant Neanderthal as its mascot?

It takes a little explaining.

rants Pass is the nearest city to Oregon Caves National Monument. When a road was opened to the caves in 1920s, Grants Pass businessmen decided to form a “Caveman Club� to promote the area.

The Cavemen, dressed in wigs and animal skins, became notorious (and popular) for their rude antics, hijacking celebrities and crashing public ceremonies uninvited. Countless politicians, including four

Celebrating 60 years in Grants Pass!

enderson’s Line-Up was founded in 1961 by my father Floyd Henderson. It was a means to provide for his family, which included eight children. Originally, the business offered alignment, steering, and brake work for about any vehicle that rolled into the shop. Of course, it didn’t hurt that I-5 was just being built a few miles away.

Since those early days, we have worked continually toward growth and progress to better serve our customers with experienced people, quality training, and the most comprehensive array of tools and equipment available. In the late ’80s, we began servicing the steering, suspension, and braking needs of the recreational vehicle industry, which led to many other opportunities.

Because there were no products to solve the problems some of our customers were experiencing, we established our SuperSteer manufacturing division. We subsequently designed a systemic approach to identifying problems in RV’s and trademarked the process. We call it the Road Performance Assessment, or RPA for short.

Today, Henderson’s Line-Up offers a full line of products designed for “Safer and Happier Driving”. We travel all over the country servicing trucks, trailers, and motorhomes at various events, and have established a nationwide reputation for knowledge, quality products and the best possible service.

athan is a Grants Pass resident, a husband, father of three children, and President of one of the fastest growing companies in America, right here in Grants Pass.

Nathan grew up in Josephine County and has spent his entire adult life in Grants Pass with a passion and vision to see our area experience positive healthy growth; and for his family and employees to be able to flourish in our beautiful community.

Nathan began his technical career right here in Grants Pass as a partner in visp.net, an Oregon internet based business, growing it from a client base of less than 10 to the largest nationwide wholesale internet provider in the country. That experience enabled Nathan to get into the real-estate and rental industry, and ultimately software development.

As Nathan’s real-estate portfolio grew he required a management platform designed for private landlords to man-

ate Lasky has been the executive director of Josephine Community Libraries, Inc., since 2010 and began her role as the library director of the newly formed Josephine Community Library District in October 2017. Kate is the 2020-21 president of the Oregon Library Association having served as an active member of the library legislative and development committee since 2012.

She is also a board member for Oregon Humanities and serves as the chair of the Grants Pass & Josephine County Chamber of Commerce Government Affairs Committee.

age the day-to-day operations of renting properties. Unfortunately the applications at the time were either depressingly unhelpful, or ridiculously expensive and not cost focused towards private landlords.

From his software development roots, Nathan founded and developed Rentec Direct in 2009 which today provides property management software and tenant screening services to over 16,000 landlords and property managers.

Rentec Direct has quickly grown to be the third largest software platform within their market using organic growth strategies and zero funding or debt. Rentec Direct’s headquarters is here in downtown Grants Pass, as are all of Rentec’s high tech employees.

As one of the only tech companies locally, Nathan has sought means to find a way to continue growing a tech company, keeping it local, and promoting the means to attract and keep employees in our area.

Kate holds a master’s degree in education and is currently pursuing her second master’s in library and information science.

Her career path has included positions in publishing, journalism, and all levels of education from kindergarten to university. She has received awards for her service to the community from the Grants Pass & Josephine County Chamber of Commerce, Oregon Library Association, and most recently the 2019 Movers & Shakers award from Library Journal.

future U.S. Presidents -- Herbert Hoover, JFK, Nixon, and Ronald Reagan -- were initiated into the Cavemen Club by drinking “sabertooth blood” out of the butt of a stuffed skunk.

“The Cavemen stopped the 1937 ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Golden Gate Bridge for 45 minutes,” said current Caveman “Big Chief ” James Lowe, his voice reverent with awe. “They never asked for permission. They asked for forgiveness.”

The popularity of the Cavemen spawned other tributes in Grants Pass. High school sports teams became the Cavemen. Businesses in town embraced the name: Caveman Roofing, Caveman Towing, the Cave12

man Bowl. And in 1971 the Cavemen Club raised $10,000 to pay International Fiberglass -- makers of the Muffler Men -- to create an imposing 16-foot-tall Caveman statue for Grants Pass.

“I sculpted it out of plaster; it took about a month. I made the head in my garage,” said Richard Ellis, the artist who created the Caveman in Los Angeles in 1970. “International Fiberglass made molds of my model, and as far as I knew that was the end of it.” Richard had no idea where the statue was headed, and went on to a long career as a professional sculptor, creating serious artworks in bronze and stone for public spaces across the

country. “And then I moved to Grants Pass and, lo and behold, there’s that damned Caveman.”

We asked Richard about the Caveman’s odd, “dislocated” right arm. “Believe it or not, the inspiration for that arm was Michelangelo,” said Richard. “It was the Rondanini Pieta, where it looks like he changed his mind in the middle of the sculpture and carved the arm hanging away from the body. That’s my favorite Michelangelo sculpture.”

On July 4, 2004, a 17-year-old devolved brute stuck a lit flare in the Caveman’s hand -- the same hand inspired by Michelangelo -- to make the statue look like it was holding a spar-

kler. The combustible Caveman was badly burned, and some residents of Grants Pass began to ask why the city had a “brutish” “illiterate” Neanderthal as its civic symbol. Many members of the Cavemen Club had grown old; their legendary shenanigans were now seen as retrograde and offensive.

The statue was repaired, but quickly began to weather, and the old Cavemen members didn’t have the strength or cash to restore it. In early 2013 The Wall Street Journal published a long feature story essentially predicting the extinction of the Caveman.

But he was tougher than his supposedly more evolved critics. A new generation of Cavemen Club

members took the statue -- “Big Bro” as James Lowe called it -- to a Grants Pass auto body shop, where it was repainted and enhanced with a full beard, more hair, nicer eyes, and bigger muscles. “Tamie Saffer did the makeover. She was a tattoo artist, but, I mean, she was an artist,” said James.

In May 2014 the restored statue was placed on a trailer and celebrated as the Grand Marshal of Grants Pass’s annual Boatnik Festival parade, accompanied by an honor guard of goofy, but “kinder, gentler” Cavemen. The statue was also carried by forklift to the high school and to all of the Caveman-named businesses in town, before being returned to its

eight-foot-high rock pedestal.

“It’s all gussied up and shiny now. I’ve lived long enough that now my old stuff is being saved,” said Richard Ellis, still somewhat perplexed by the statue’s popularity. “Any time my family comes to visit we have to go and stand in front of the Caveman for pictures.”

Big Chief James Lowe sees nothing perplexing in the Caveman and estimated that 98 percent of Grants Pass citizens are in favor of its 1,500-pound Neanderthal. “He’s big and ugly and we’re darned proud of him.” ~ Field Review by the Team at RoadsideAmerica.com
