As we step into a fresh new year, I’m filled with gratitude and optimism for all that we accomplished together in 2024 and all that lies ahead in 2025. Reflecting on the past year, it’s clear that our community is one defined by innovation, resilience, and a collective drive to succeed.

2024 brought expanded opportunities for our members to connect, share ideas, and find solutions to the challenges facing their businesses. Through networking events, business forums, and collaborative workshops, the Chamber worked to amplify the voices of our local business community and advocate for policies that promote economic growth.

While we celebrate these successes, we’re equally excited for what’s to come in 2025. This year, we’re aiming to launch a much-anticipated Leadership Training Program. This program will provide critical tools and resources for those looking to elevate their careers, strengthen their leadership abilities, and engage more deeply in our community. We believe this initiative will fill a vital gap in workforce development, helping local businesses and our region thrive.

Other goals for 2025 include bringing Concerts in the Park back home to Riverside Park where we can celebrate community and arts in our parks. We look to expand Lemonade Day to reach even more young entrepreneurs and begin member engagement and strategic planning to keep our efforts of supporting and promoting local commerce through communication, advocacy and partnerships relevant and valuable. Strategic planning will include strengthening our advocacy efforts to support local businesses at every level, offering new educational programs and events tailored to the evolving needs of our members and building even stronger partnerships to ensure the long-term prosperity of our local economy.

As we look to the future, we are reminded that our greatest asset is you—our members, partners, and community leaders. Together, we are making Grants Pass and Josephine County a place where businesses succeed, families thrive, and opportunities abound.

2024 Holiday Reflections and Hope for the Future “I was asked, why do I ring the bell?” ...Simply to pay it forward...

M

y adopted grandma was an independent career woman, yet she found herself in need of help with getting a new vision prescription and glasses. It was in her time of need she turned to the Salvation Army. It is hard for “independent” people to ask for help and the health crisis was humbling for her. Yet the generosity of the Salvation Army made a deep impression. Following this experience, it was her admonition to me, that if I was going to give of my time and energy, it should be to the Salvation Army,--because they will help anyone. Period.

I have witnessed the generosity of the local Grants Pass Salvation Army for over 32 years, only having the opportunity to give back in volunteer service over the last 8 years. There are thousands of our neighbors in our community that benefit from the service of the Salvation Army, as well as other food pantries and social service agencies. The Salvation Army is one of the easiest organizations where I can jump in and help as a volunteer, and give a little back in the way of time and energy.

I ring the bell because the money dropped in the red kettle stays here in our community. I ring the bell because, in the past, I was a recipient of a bag of food when my paycheck wouldn’t make it to the end

of the month. I ring the bell because it is fun to interact with my neighbors as they shop at our local stores. I ring the bell because I know I need to do my part to make sure this organization is here to help my community. Maybe it’s selfish, but now I’m an independent career woman like my grandma was, and I’m grateful that I can help the Salvation Army in memory and respect to her, but also I know I can call on them if I need to, and the Army would answer the call.

In 2024, I hoped we would have an abundance of volunteers and overflowing contributions to RedKettleGrantsPass.org. While that didn’t happen, I remain hopeful. I believe there could be waiting lists of volunteers eager to support this vital community organization if everyone who appreciates the Salvation Army’s work or has been the grateful recipient of their service gave a little of their time at the next opportunity to ring the bell.

My hope for 2025 is that we each realize we can draw more from ourselves than we contain, and if we have any doubt, we remember Catherine Ryan Hyde’s words: “If you can’t pay it back, pay it forward.” ~ Respectfully shared, Cat Bonney

• Young Professionals Network: Our Young Professionals honored the spirit of giving during the holiday season by volunteering to make this year’s Rogue Winterfest at the Bear Hotel a success.

• Cocoa Crawl: In addition to the Shop Small Season campaign, the Chamber hosted a first-ever Cocoa Crawl event. The event featured over 25 local merchants offering tastings of hot cocoa to shoppers, who took advantage of holiday deals, dined at local eateries and shared in the festivities of the holiday season. The Chamber offered free gift wrapping for purchases made at participating locations.

• Holiday Window Decorating Contest: We carried on our annual tradition of the Holiday Window Decorating Contest and were not disappointed in the efforts so many local businesses put into their work, providing an extra level of charm to our local businesses.

• Operation Joy: Thanks to all who participated in Operation Joy, which spread holiday cheer by delivering thousands of holiday cards to seniors living in many of our local assisted living facilities.

• Volunteer Appreciation Party: Chamber Staff treated the heartbeat of our Visitor’s Center, our volunteers, to our annual appreciation dinner. We shared in their experiences of decades of service and volunteerism and recognized Judy Putnam as the 2024 Volunteer of the Year.

Previews: • Annual Awards Banquet: SAVE THE DATE! Our annual Awards Banquet will be a Valentines Day special as we celebrate success in business and honor our community partners February 14th , 2025. Tickets and sponsorships are available now and nominations for awards open this month.

• Legislative Agenda: Our Government Affairs Committee will finalize work to draft a legislative agenda to steer our advocacy priorities in 2025. We will work in conjunction with the State Chamber to address priorities in Salem, while also working to draft a framework relative to the Chamber’s mission to support and promote local commerce.

• Sponsorship Opportunities: With our 2025 sponsorship and event calendar complete, Chamber staff will be working with local businesses to identify opportunities to promote their businesses through Chamber events and programming. If you are interested in highlighting your business, reach out Christie Swafford to learn more about the many opportunities available.

• Local Advocacy: We will take the opportunity in January to engage with both incoming and incumbent local elected leaders to share the successes and challenges local businesses face and ensure that local businesses, the cornerstone of our economy are seen as a valuable partner and resource for the 2025 terms

• Succession Planning: 2025 will welcome new Board members to the Chamber Board as well as filling new committee seats in our Government Affairs Committee, Business Retention & Expansion Committee, Finance Committee, Young Professionals Network and Ambassadors. Thank you to outgoing members and welcome to those joining these positions.

• Opening a Business Manual: In response to feedback from start-up companies and young entrepreneurs the Chamber will finalize a “Starting a Business in Josephine County” manual that includes steps for navigating licensing, filing and compliance for start-up businesses opening in Grants Pass and Josephine County.

The Young Professionals Network is for young professionals in the target age range of 18-45 who are looking for networking opportunities with other young professionals, connections to the community and business leaders, community engagement, and professional development. The network holds monthly luncheons, quarterly socials, and community service projects.

This past year, our Network awarded two scholarships to local students, dedicated time and resources to the Josephine County Food Bank, contributed to the Josephine County Search & Rescue, conducted quarterly cleanups through the Adopt-a-Street program, hosted distinguished speakers, provided an array of relevant content, collaborated with local businesses, and forged meaningful connections.
