udy was born in Eugene Oregon and raised In Grants Pass where she graduated from Grants Pass High School. She plays the flute and you can see her play at 1st Assembly on many Sunday mornings.

Currently, Judy and her husband Rick Samuelson own two locations in Southern Oregon including Judy’s Grants Pass Florist and Gifts and Judy’s Central Point Florist and Gifts. Both stores are successful FTD outlets.

Rick is a master designer and has taught floral design throughout the years. Rick is constantly networking with others who are successful in the industry.

Judy became involved in the floral business and learned the trade quickly. She took on roles such as speaking at local clubs and organizations, churches, and schools. She talks about the floral industry, choosing the perfect arrangement for special occasions, wedding and funeral flowers, unique table settings, as well as tips on design.

Judy has become a great asset to the floral industry and the local community.

he Independent Order of Odd Fellows Golden Rule Lodge No. 78 was instituted on July 18, 1884 and is the oldest Fraternal Organization in Grants Pass. Meetings are held on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of each month.

What are some of the things this lodge does in the community?

E a c h year, the Golden Rule Lodge and the Etna Rebekah Lodge provides five students a 1,000.00 dollar scholarship to a qualified student from each of our four Josephine County high schools. The latest available data from the Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages is from the second quarter 2016, before the statewide minimum wage increases took place in July 2016. Therefore the increases in pay as shown in the graph below should have been market driven.

Oregon’s total payroll per job increased by an impressive 5.7 percent between the second quarters of 2015 and 2016. Local wages increased by 4.0 and 4.3 percent in Josephine and Jackson counties, respectively. Though the local wage increases were healthy, that did not help reduce the persistent and significant (20-30 percent) gap between the average pay in Oregon and the Rogue Valley.

Emergency Services Manager

Jenny Hall began her career in emergency management on a temporary reassignment during the 2002 Biscuit Fire in the Illinois Valley. Jenny currently serves as the Emergency Services Manager in Josephine County, OR. Her experience within emergency management includes working as the assistant to both the previous Josephine County Emergency Services Manager and the Jackson County Emergency Manager in the neighboring county. She has also held the position of Public Health Preparedness Coordinator in Josephine County.

Although she enjoys all aspects of her job, Jenny’s favorite activities include conducting public outreach, writing plans and working with grass-roots neighborhood preparedness groups.

Jenny lives in Central Point, OR with her husband, two children and five pets.

Stockings for Soldiers 2016

F

or the 7th year Josephine County OSU Extension Office and 4-H set out to collect donations of personal items for service men and women who are stationed overseas during the holiday season. Our goal was 200 Stockings for Soldiers.

Thank you to all that donated and participated in 2016. We shipped a total of 380 stockings, and one box of miscellaneous donations that would not fit in a stocking. Our final total was 96 large flat rate boxes with each box holding four stockings.

They were shipped to Afghanistan, Turkey, Iraq, and undisclosed areas.

How many kids and parents participated?

Most of our many clubs are involved one way or another. Some sew stockings, or send hand written cards

to include in the stockings. Many clubs send money to help with the shipping.

And other organizations and local businesses donate to Stockings for Soldiers with items needed.

There are many people who just come into the extension office and leave donations without a contact name. When it’s time to fill and ship, all club members are invited to help.

How many days to pull it together?

It starts in the summer. We notify the newspapers and radio outlets around July 4th that we will be doing Stockings for Soldiers again this year.

And at the Josephine County Fair, we put up a display with a donation bin. We also have blank cards that people can fill out and they are included in the stockings.

After fair, groups are filling out applications for donations from local businesses.

In September, schools are notified to see if they are willing to help with

cards for the soldiers and/or donations.

Veterans Days is when it gets busy with donations. Finally, at the end of Nov inventory is taken to see how much we must mail and how much shipping we can pay for. If we have the money, we can purchase extra items that may not have been donated. Finally, December packaging and shipping. After six years, we have a real system that works.

Many items and support came from Walmart, Dutch Bros, Seven Feathers, The Gideon's International, American Legion Auxiliary, JoAnn Fabrics, Rogue River Pharmacy, Allcare, Asante TRMC Medical records dept., Gamma Beta Chapter 3354,

Daughters of the American Revolution Rogue River Chapter. Plus, many individuals and those who do not leave any contact information when dropping off donations at the Extension office.

We really have had a good year in 2016, and want to thank the many individuals, families, companies and Sandi Crowder, owner of Sandi’s Candies in downtown Grants Pass for helping us reach the new goal of 380 stocking for our Soldiers Project 2016.

Sandi Crowder has helped the 4H groups for many years by getting donations for the shipping. This year, local business’ owners joined in with Sandi and the Soldiers Project 2016 and helped raise over $3,000 towards shipping and additional items needed.

Construction Begins

T

he $5.3 million rehabilitation project is the first major makeover for the Caveman Bridge, which was completed in 1931.

The project is scheduled to begin after Labor Day weekend in 2017 and be completed by late summer 2018.

Caveman Bridge serves as the gateway to the Redwood Empire of southwest Oregon and northern California. The historic gateway sign erected on the north side of the bridge will also undergo rehabilitation by the city of Grants Pass.

ODOT recently briefed the Grants Pass City Council on the project scope and efforts to reduce the construction impacts on community events and nearby businesses. Additional community outreach is planned as the project nears, including a formal open house event as well as project updates through the local media.

n Josephine County, the work of The Salvation Army is done in many ways and only possible because of the many caring volunteers who devote their time and money. The outreach to the community includes our active Advisory Board, Social Service office, food pantry, mobile food truck, thrift store, seasonal events, outreach to the elderly and home bound, emergency disaster response and our Youth Troops program.

The volunteers who help are people from different backgrounds and range in all ages. In our food pantry, they help sort food, clean fridges, greet clients who come in for assistance and help take clothes and furniture back and forth from our thrift

As well as the local food pantry, we have volunteers who go out every Monday to Wolf Creek and Merlin in our mobile food truck and bring food to these high poverty areas. Last year, some of the assistance provided through our social service office and food pantry included helping 10,390 people with food, 14,609 people with clothing, 4,304 furniture vouchers, 1,423 personal comfort kits and overall helped 13,013 families with some type of assistance.

We have volunteers who help with our Youth Programs: Singing Company and Youth Troops (a scouting program for kids ages 4-18).

These programs help keep kids off the streets and active after school and throughout the week. There are many people who are home bound or in nursing homes without family to visit them. We have caring people who visit them regularly as well as sing songs and give gifts continued, page 19 when we can.

Duro-Last , Inc.'s Oregon Plant Receives Highest Level of Prestigious Safety Award Duro-Last, Inc. is excited to announce that its Grants Pass, Oregon manufacturing facility has received Star Site status from the Occupational Safety & Health Organization’s (OSHA) Voluntary Protection Program (VPP).

“The VPPs promote effective worksite-based safety and health. Approval into VPP is OSHA’s official recognition of the outstanding efforts of employers and employees who have achieved exemplary occupational safety and health,” According to OSHA.

Star Site status is the highest of three programs offered by VPP. “This certification is designed for exemplary worksites with comprehensive, successful safety and health management systems.”

“Safety is always Duro-Last’s number one priority,” said Tim Hart, Vice President of Western Operations. “I would like to congratulate the employees, Safety Committee, safety director, managers, our CEO Tom Saeli and the Board

of directors who champion and support safety throughout the company. “

Duro-Last has a long history of working together with OSHA, and the Grants Pass plant was also a graduate of the OSHA Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP) in 2006.

All Grants Pass employees were integral in complying with VPP guidelines and standards. Retaining VPP Star Site status is an ongoing process, and continuous improvement is expected.

The VPP Star Site award was presented by the Oregon OSHA Director Michael Wood on November 17 at the Grants Pass facility at an Open House Event.

On Friday, Nov. 4 at the Illinois Valley Family Coalition (IVFC) there was 211 training for employees of various nonprofit organizations in the Valley.

The purpose of 211 training was to educate community organizations about 211 info. which is a Federal Communications Commission (FCC) designated Quick Dial phone number similar to the 911 emergency services except this phone number is for getting information about health and social services.

“In Oregon we are very fortunate to have 211 covered throughout the whole state. One data base covers the whole state,” said Carrie Prechtel, community engagement coordinator for Jackson and Josephine counties

Prechtel explained that the resources you can find in the 211 info system include: Crisis situations, shelters, food, bill paying, transportation, recreation, employment, school/GED, housing,

9 a.m. – 5 p.m. She said that at some point the call center would like to be open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The only information that is required from callers is their zip code. All other demographic information that is asked for is optional.

During the 2015 calendar year, 432,167 contacts were made in Oregon to 211 and the top five needs of callers were housing and rent; energy assistance; SNAP and food pantries; shelters; and health clinics and dental care.

Prechtel wanted to assure the community that the community information specialists in the information and referral staff were accredited, professional and that they were trained to be very positive and compassionate to all callers. It is also a bonus that they have a bi-lingual staff available.

Some specialty programs now available through 211 are free child care referrals for parents and caregivers; a foster parent support line; and a maternal, child and reproductive health information and referral service.

“There are multiple ways to access 211 information,” explained Prechtel. You can dial 211 by phone, text your zip code to 898211, search 211info.org by website or email questions to help@211info.org.

And currently there is a free Smartphone app sponsored by the Department of Human Services available for iPhones or Androids that you can download by searching for “211 info.”

Prechtel said her favorite ways to use the service would be to call or text.

“The call center is located in Portland and they have wrap-around services,” she said, meaning that if someone calls in with one need they can get help with other needs at the same time. “It is easier to call rather than to look up information on-line because you might not know the correct name of a resource and a live technician can help with that. For example if someone called and was looking for food stamps, a technician would know that is called the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) program.”
