Hi Members, The Chamber is up and rolling full steam ahead! We have a lot of big items coming up in the business world that the Chamber is closely involved in. Here are some important dates.

February 1 starts the Oregon Legislative Session March 11 The Chamber Annual Awards Banquet May 17 Josephine County Primary Election One major parts of the Chamber of Commerce world is advocacy. That advocacy is on the local level (City and County), state level, and federal level.

To represent our members and businesses, we work very closely with our state representatives during the Oregon Legislative session. We closely monitor bills that will impact our businesses. This year the short session starts on February 1. During session, we will be meeting weekly with Representative Morgan and Representative Stark and the Oregon State Chamber to monitor bills. We strongly encourage any member that has a bill that will impact their company reach out to us so we can add it to the list.

This past week, we also had the opportunity to meet with Congressman Wyden and Congressman Bentz. It is important for us to communicate the struggles our local companies face to our federal representatives. Please communicate with us items of interest on the federal level. We have direct communication lines with our Congress members.

We are also monitoring the upcoming Primary Election. Once again, we will be hosting candidate forums in April to educate voters on all of the candidates. Stay tuned for more details.

We are also looking forward to finally celebrating together for the Annual Awards Banquet! During the evening, we will be honoring our volunteers, board members, staff, and our members! We will share the many accomplishments we were able to achieve and our goals for 2022! We will also be releasing the winners of our business awards. The event will be Friday, March 11, 5:30 p.m. at the Grants Pass Golf Course. Tickets are now on sale! I hope you will be able to join us.

Right the First Time, Every time on Time Since 1975!

D

avid Markley first opened the business as STAR Import Service in 1975. We have been serving our community and surrounding areas with impeccable automotive maintenance, service and repair ever since.

Our specialty is European and Japanese imported vehicles; however, we service all makes and models including Ford, General Motors and Chrysler. Thus, in the mid 1990’s we changed our name to STAR Automotive.

In March of 1990, Jim Lefeber was driving his Porsche 914 south from Seattle on I-5 when his car started those unforgettable “bad” noises. Jim limped his Porsche to Grants Pass and was referred to STAR Import Service by Lonnie’s Union at the top of 6th street. Jim stayed in Grants Pass for three days while his Porsche was being repaired when he learned that David Markley might be interested in retiring. After much discussion with David Markley, Jim became the owner of STAR Automotive on December 1, 1990.

Jim has created a culture within the community and the hearts of those who work at STAR and trust STAR with its services it provides. STAR employees are the soul of the business and have pride and workmanship in all they do. They truly love what they do and most important care about our customers we serve. In 2018 Jim & Jolene (my mom and dad) have discussed several options about retirement and what would be beneficial for them and the business. Jim asked me if I would like to meet him for lunch and of course I said yes.

While Jim and I were having lunch at Mushashi’s he proposes to me that he is planning on retiring and asked me (Paul Krueger) if I would be interested in the opportunity to take the reins of STAR Automotive. As a huge honor in continuing the family business I accepted his offer and in January 1 2019 I started working at STAR. We developed a 5-year succession plan.

We currently employ four technicians and two service advisors with many years of experience and knowledge. We encourage constant ongoing training to keep up with our industry. We have the latest up to date equipment to do our services Right the First Time, Every Time on Time Since 1975.

“WIPE OUT HUNGER”

F

or the 11th year Kelly’s Automotive Service in Grants Pass and Medford is trying their best to help “Wipe Out Hunger”. From mid-January until mid-February Kelly’s exchanges 40 ounces or more of peanut, sun, soy or almond butter and 10 ounces or more of jelly, for a pair of windshield wipers installed on your car. The wipers installed are valued up to $35.00, but if you have specialty wipers, they ask that you call ahead so they can order them. Kelly’s will take $35.00 off the cost of those wipers for your peanut butter and jelly donation.

The idea for the Wipe Out Hunger Drive came when co-owner Lisa McClease-Kelly was at a meeting with the Executive Director of the Josephine County food bank. At that meeting she found out that the food bank was receiving potato chips and bubble gum from the Oregon Food bank for their monthly “ration”. “How are we going to feed hungry kids with that?” she asked. After talking to the food bank about peanut butter being a shelf stable food that is easy for kids to access, the “Wipe Out Hunger” drive was born.

This year’s Wipe Out Hunger drive ends on February 11th. No appointment is needed, please just make sure the food is not expired or does not expire soon.

All donations go to the Josephine County Food Bank or Access Nutrition Program. Every year the Medford and Grants Pass shops have a competition to see who can bring in the most food. For the last 5 years, Medford has held the title. Come on Grants Pass/Josephine County, let’s show them our giving heart!

The Young Professionals Network is for young professionals in the target age range of 18-45 who are looking for networking opportunities with other young professionals, connections to the community and business leaders, community engagement, and professional development. The network holds monthly luncheons, quarterly socials, and community service projects.

Construction Excise Tax What is it...

The City of Grants Pass recently passed a Construction Excise Tax (CET) that will place a 1/2% tax on residential permits valued at $50,000 and above and a 1% tax on commercial/industrial permits valued at $50,000 and above.

What’s the Plan...

The Grants Pass & Josephine County Chamber of Commerce met with City Councilors and City management to discuss how this will impact our businesses.

The meeting was a great step in the right direction and our goal is to collaboratively work with the City of Grants Pass. The Chamber looks forward to working closely with the City of Grants Pass on this ordinance to help create affordable housing including workforce housing for our community.

Next Steps...

With the help of City Management, the Chamber is developing a Q&A to help our community understand the CET. Our next step will be to create a roundtable discussion to bring business owners together to better understand the impact, conditions and benefits to community and our local economy . This information will allow us to help craft and implement the best usage of this tax.

Win Howard

Kelsy Ausland is President of Ausland Group, a team of engineers, architects, and builders. She oversees the daily operations of Ausland Group, while focusing on driving land development and engineering projects for clients. She is a licensed engineer and graduate of Oregon State University.

Win Howard has more than 25 years of leadership experience in hospitals and health systems including 13 years at the executive level with over a decade as a Chief Executive Officer. Consistently driving exceptional operational results and engaging various constituents toward a common vision.

Kelsy’s commitment to her community has led her to serve on a variety of boards. She is currently serving on the Board of Directors of local arts organization, Britt Festivals, the Board of Directors of the Professional Engineers of Oregon, and co-chair of the Construction Industry Section for WorkSource Rogue Valley.

Win has served as Asante’s Three Rivers Medical Center CEO since 2009. He has been with Asante since 2002 starting out as Asante Regional Manager for Imaging Services.
