I am so excited to have been chosen Grants Pass Chamber of Commerce Greeter of the Month for January.

Back in the late 1990’s I started going to meetings when I volunteered with the March of Dimes. After about my second meeting, I was hooked. Even though attendance was much smaller back then, I still had a difficult time talking in front of the group. Over the years that has changed as I participated in various committees of the Chamber. I am sure there are times, when I get on my soapbox about the Chamber that some people want to break out the duct tape.

In past years, I have been very proud that I served on the Board for many years in officer capacities right up to and including Chamber Board Chair. In recent years, I have served, for the most part, on the Chamber Government Affairs Committee.

I will always be grateful to the Chamber of Commerce and all the participants who have and continue to add an incredible dimension to my life. I am not the same person I was back when I started. Thanks to all of you, I continue to learn and grow. Thank you, with all my heart, for this incredible honor.

This visit is one of the concluding activities to the JA Finance Program, which encompasses important elements of personal financial literacy and career awareness.

On Feb 27th through March 6th, 8th graders from North & South GP Middle Schools, Ruch, Lorna Byrne, Illinois Valley, New Hope, and College Dreams students will visit JA Finance Park.

Going Caveman in Grants Pass G

rowing up in Oregon, Caveman campers were everywhere. On weekend fishing trips with my family, my sisters and I would laugh at the Fred Flintstone-like logo on the front of each camper.

At the time, I had no idea the caveman was from a national park site. I figured this out later in life during my first visit to Oregon Caves National Monument and Preserve.

Turns out there is a decadeslong connection between the town of Grants Pass, the caveman and the caves.

The monument is located in the Siskiyou Mountains of southern Oregon, about an hour west of Grants Pass. Elijah Davidson discovered the site in 1874 when he followed his dog, who was chasing a bear, into the caves.

Within a decade, the first fledgling tour company was giving $1 underground tours, which included a camping spot and pasture to graze your horse. Official recognition by the federal government came in 1909 when President William Taft used the Antiquities Act to create Oregon Caves National Monument.

With the advent of the automobile and construction of a road to the caves in the mid-1920s, business owners in Grants Pass began to realize the value of a booming tourism industry.

A group of locals calling themselves the Oregon Cavemen began dressing in animal skins and horsehair wigs and staging themselves along the underground tour at Oregon Caves, posing for photos in promotional brochures, taking part in parades and public events, and hosting annual events to draw people to the area.

It is easy to see why campers manufactured in Grants Pass were branded with the caveman logo that tickled my sisters to no end every time they saw one.

For more than 50 years’ families have enjoyed this five-day event that supports the children and youth programs of the communities of Southern Oregon.

Club Information

The Grants Pass Active Club is a non-profit organization that contributes to the youth of Oregon. Boatnik is the sole fundraiser for this group of volunteers and takes all year to plan. The members quietly support their community by bringing Oregon’s second largest festival to the shores of Riverside Park and the Rogue River.

Josephine County Youth Tree Plant ~ 28th Annual

he 28th annual Forestry Youth Tree Plant event will be held February 9th – February 11th.

This is the only continuous Youth Tree Plant in the state of Oregon – approaching an estimated 100,000 trees planted on Josephine County Land and approximately 21,400 youth who have planted trees since 1990.

Spotlight on Chamber Committees

The Chamber's Business Retention & Expansion (BR&E) Committee began in 1998. The purpose of BR&E is to help existing local businesses grow, expand and overcome obstacles.

Formal face-to-face business surveys are conducted every three years to gather vital information to better provide assistance to local firms. We then develop strategies to aid them based on the data that we gather. From time to time, we coordinate or help to coordinate special events and projects based on the needs of the business community. New committee members and survey volunteers are appreciated.

The current BR&E committee chair is Lowell Gibson - NiceBadge.

BR&E Committee meetings are held the second Tuesday of each month at 7:30 a.m. for one hour.

Community Volunteers

Josephine County Foundation On Saturday January 14th, 2017 students of the Josephine County Foundation (JCF) served 170 residents in the community by providing them with a free eye exam. All five of the high schools from Josephine County (New Hope Christian School, North Valley High, Grants Pass High, Hidden Valley High, and Illinois Valley High) were involved; along with three doctors from the Medford area. The residents who came to the clinic that day were overjoyed and appreciative of all the work that the students were doing.

In addition to receiving a full eye exam, patients were also screened for preexisting conditions and diseases including: cataracts, macular degeneration, hypertensive retinopathy, diabetic retinopathy, and amblyopia. Blood pressure was also checked in order to screen for diabetes and hypertension which can

Redwood Terrace Assisted Living Receives Two Awards

F

or the third year in a row, Redwood Terrace Assisted Living, located near the RCC campus, was selected to receive TWO Excellence in Action Awards by National Research Corporation.

The awards recognize long term care and senior living organizations that achieve exceptionally high levels of excellence. The requirements for one of the awards are met by having overall customer satisfaction and the other by having overall workforce satisfaction.

Redwood Terrace is only one of two communities is Oregon that was awarded both awards. The requirements for the two awards are met by having overall customer and workforce satisfaction levels that fall within the top 10% of qualifying organizations nationally.

Redwood Terrace’s Executive Director, Jim Thompson, commented “We are very proud of these results, which we reflect well on the dedication of our employees, as well as our company’s com-

mitment to providing quality assisted living services. This feedback allows us to identify our strengths and improvement opp or tu n i ties so we can continue to provide a safe, positive, and caring environment for our residents.”

Redwood Terrace celebrated the awards in January with the Happy Employee contest, inviting members of the Grants Pass community to drop by and take a "selfie" with any one of the workers on staff.

Redwood Terrace is an assisted living community located on Canal Avenue and has 45 individual studio and one-bedroom apartments.

The Grants Pass Elmer's team received the prestigious Restaurant of the Year award this year in Scottsdale Arizona.

The title was awarded by Elmer's Restaurants Inc. to the Grants Pass Elmer's location. The management team and local owners, Dave and Doneta Thomason made the trip to Scottsdale to receive the award.

Nominees for the award were graded scrupulously on topics including health inspection scores, employee retention, sales growth, guest satisfaction, corporate quality inspection scores and community involvement.
