From the desk of the President & CEO

2020 will always be a year that we won’t forget. For many of us, it was a struggle financially and emotionally. We each had to make sacrifices and adapt to our current situation.

I would like to take this time to thank each of you for continuing your membership with the Grants Pass & Josephine County Chamber of Commerce. This year was not the year any of us expected, but because of you and your investment we were able to continue advocating for our business community. We would not have been able to survive this year without your support. Thank you!

Almost all of our fundraising events were cancelled this year. Due to our 501c6 status, we have also not been able to qualify for the state grants, federal programs, or the Paycheck Protection Plan. We have cut many expenses and altered how we do business to bring our members and business community continued services.

Due to your participation, communication, and investment, we have been able to advocate for our businesses, encourage local shopping, work directly with the Governor’s office, and our community partners regionally and locally to provide resources for our community.

Thank you to the businesses that communicated with us their struggles and concerns. We were able to share those comments with the Governor’s office and elected officials to make changes to guidelines and restrictions.

Thank you to the members that participated virtually in Greeters, Committee meetings, Round Tables, Young Professional Luncheons, and more. We are averaging almost 50 members each Wednesday for Greeters.

Thank you to the individuals that sent emails and thank you cards of encouragement. We truly appreciate those kinds words. Each of our members participate in different ways, but each one makes a difference.

Please reach out to us if there is anything, we can do to help your business. We continue to think outside the box and implement new creative ways to help our businesses. Please take a look inside for a timeline of 2020 and the successes we had!

We sincerely appreciate all of your support in 2020. Thank you for your continued membership even in times of hardship. It means a lot! We are in this together.

The Grants Pass and Josephine County Chamber is now accepting unused Holiday cards for Operation Joy.

Operation Joy is a program designed to provide those in assisted living facilities some holiday cheer by receiving Christmas cards. This year more than ever, our seniors need to feel the community support and holiday spirit!

To donate cards please drop off at the Chamber located at 1995 NW Vine Street Grants Pass.

Monday-Friday 9:00 am-5:00 pm.

This year we will not be including names on the cards, as many residents come and go. If your club, group, team, or organization is interested in helping brighten the season by filling out cards, stop by the Chamber office. We will have cards available and the participating lists by the beginning of November.

Member Focus

Oregon Books and Games is now EMPLOYEE-OWNED! Karen and Robert put the bookstore up for sale over a year ago. They had several interested parties who were doing their due diligence, but it was approaching fall and the holiday season, so it was agreed to hold off until the end of the year.

And we all know what happened then.

Since February, Chris Nelson, Sarah Wager, and Linda Holt have risen to the challenges of keeping a business going under Covid-19. In March, Robert and Linda were declared “At Risk” and they began working from home, leaving much of the day to day operation to Chris and Sarah. Despite these setbacks, the store remained open with restrictions and survived.

As things were settling to the “New Normal”, and Karen was enjoying having Robert around a lot more, thoughts turned back to retiring and selling the store.

As they were discussing putting together an updated package to sell the store, it hit them that the solution was right in front of them. Management and operation were already in place and their important desire to see the bookstore continue for the community the way it had for 30 years was already happening. It just needed time and mentoring.

Sarah Wager joined the store in July 2018, and is a graduate of George Fox University, with a major in English Literature. Her love of books and writing has driven her over the years to keep working on that great novel (which she keeps hidden). As former co-chair of Southern Oregon’s chapter of Willamette Writers, Sarah keeps in touch with many of Oregon’s writers and has been the representative of Oregon Books to all the local authors and events as manager for the store.

Chris Nelson joined the store in January 2019, and is a graduate of Grand Canyon University with a major in Theology with emphasis in Project Management. With that clean cut young look at over 6 feet, Chris can reach the top shelves, and has developed a keen sense of purchasing used books, as well as working to expand the stores on-line sales which have increased substantially with Covid-19. He plans to continue his education in business working eventually towards an MBA. Linda Holt joined the store in March 2005, and came with a love of books, great personality that everyone loved and some great retail experience, not to mention her years in the US Navy. Linda has been the favorite go-to person for hundreds of our customers and newer employees.

After 30 years, Robert and Karen Moore are excited to see their dream of a community bookstore grow into a new adventure. They look forward to guiding the new ownership and helping the bookstore continue to thrive.

So, almost 30 years to the day, the business was re-organized in Grants Pass and the necessary papers were filled to create a new business called OBG, Inc dba Oregon Books and Games to continue operation of the bookstore.

Sarah Wager and Chris Nelson will be managing the store during operating hours, and Linda Holt will continue as the senior buyer applying 15 years of experience to picking the right books for our unique market and its special customers. Karen and Robert Moore will remain as they have for the next couple of years to make sure the transition goes smoothly.

The Young Marines is a national non-profit 501c (3) youth education and service program for boys and girls, aged eight through the completion of high school. Josephine County Search and Rescue (SAR) volunteers have been serving our County Residents since 1967.

SAR currently have around one hundred (100) active volunteers who are ready, willing, and able to respond to 911 calls for help.

SAR provides a significant savings and service to our County residents and we do it without any paid staff.

In a normal year SAR volunteers put in over 17,000 hours of service.

Our Foster Kids, Inc. is a local non-profit that works year-round to put smiles on the faces of every Josephine County Foster Children by providing Birthday cards, back to school supplies as well as Christmas presents.

Our Foster Kids, Angel Tree program is going on right now! We have been able to put up several trees full of wishes that local foster children have for Christmas this year!

You can find a tree of gift tags at Walmart, Big-Lots & the Sheriff â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s office. We also have tags available at the drive thru lanes at both First Interstate Bank locations, Key Bank & all Umpqua bank locations in Grants Pass.

Josephine County Fairgrounds is pleased to announce a drive thru light display called ‘Christmas on the Midway’ starting December 5th at 5:00pm that will run through the month’s end every night from 5pm -10pm. Buildings down the Midway have been sponsored by businesses and individuals to showcase their creative light displays to spread Holiday Cheer to the community.

This Saturday, December 5th from 6pm -10pm the free drive thru event will also feature a live manager scene and each Saturday Santa Claus to waive to and bring smiles to the children’s faces.

Make sure the kids bring their letters to Santa and drop off in Santa’s mailbox!

Driving directions: Once inside the Fairground’s main gates, drive straight down the midway enjoying the lights, at the far end of the lawn you’ll take a left through the gate between the covered arena and barn, at the end of the covered arena you’ve reached the end of the display, you’ll turn left again and head back to the front gate.
