Hi Members,

As I reflect on my career in the Chamber industry, it gives me a lot of pride and many stories to tell. In August, I am celebrating my third year with the Grants Pass & Josephine County Chamber of Commerce and 11 years in the Chamber world.

Through out my years, the common thread I get asked is what is a Chamber? What do you do?

I have the elevator speech, but I have found the Chamber means something different to each person. Of course, there is also a lot of misunderstanding that we are a government organization or the city.

For this article, I thought it would be fitting to give an overview of what a Chamber of Commerce is. The Chamber is a private non-profit, membership-based organization that remains bipartisan while focusing on advocating for businesses.

Since our creation in 1924, we have adapted and changed to remain relevant creating lasting relationships with businesses, community leaders, county, city and state officials.

One of the reasons the Chamber of Commerce has survived almost 100 years is our goals and mission are developed by our members and community. Through conversations with business owners, committees, and data collection, we are able to be the voice of businesses representing them when important decisions are being made.

You will find Chambers of Commerce organizations are part of many historic moments. For instance, the Chambers in Grants Pass and San Francisco were very instrumental in the Redwood Indian Marathon that put Grants Pass on the map as a tourist destination for years to come. A full article on the event is in this newsletter.

Every decision and move we make is guided by: will it be for the betterment of our community?

We are driven by the long-term plan and impacts. We strive every day to be a place where businesses can grow and prosper, where people want to raise their families and tourists want to visit.

For over 70 years Star Body Works has served Southern Oregon as a collision repair center. The Lamensdorf family has owned the business for over 25 of those years. The Lamensdorf family has taken the business from its original location to its current 4 locations across the Rogue Valley.

The Star Body Works family has been fortunate over the years to participate in various community events and fundraisers to support local families, organizations, businesses, and activities. Some of the highlights have been giving away vehicles, supporting local foster children, 4H auctions, and car show/ fundraiser events.

We were fortunate to partner with the NABC, to acquire, repair, and give away 3 vehicles to families in need, to help them with reliable transportation for day-to-day living.

We have participated the last 4 years in the annual Royal Family Kids banquet, which is a fundraiser to send local youth in foster care to a once in a lifetime camp, where they get to be treated like Royalty.

We have a passion for recognizing the hard work put in by 4H members, and each year the Lamensdorf family purchases livestock at 4H auctions to support local youth. A current collaboration we are involved in is a Car show fundraiser being put on at Star Body Works Grants Pass on 8/14/21 to benefit Canine Angels.

Canine Angels is an organization that trains and pairs up service dogs with children who have disabilities to help them with navigating life 715 Union Ave as they grow up.

The Young Professionals Network is for young professionals in the target age range of 18-45 who are looking for networking opportunities with other young professionals, connections to the community and business leaders, community engagement, and professional development. The network holds monthly luncheons, quarterly socials, and community service projects.

What a fantastic turnout for our first in-person Young Professionals Monthly Luncheon! Our panelists did a great job talking about “Overcoming Obstacles”.

The panel included Win Howard of Asante Three Rivers Medical Center, Jeff Sigel of Jim Sigel Automotive, Chris Walker of True Juice, Jan Bertaggia of Wild Rogue Emporium and Lowell Gibson of NiceBadge.

Due to Covid restrictions we were not able to hold our Annual Meeting and Awards Banquet earlier this year, so this year we will hold our Annual Membership Meeting in person and have a virtual viewing option in lieu of our regular Greeter’s Meeting on Wednesday, August 18th at 8:00 am.

The Annual Meeting will include a recap of the year and our future plans.

We will be honoring many and reviewing accomplishments, including a video presentation.

1927 Redwood Indian Marathon - 480 Miles

Plans for the 1927 Redwood Indian Marathon In 1927, with all the recent national attention to Native American runners, including the Tarahumara who were coming to run in Texas, the Chamber of Commerce in San Francisco conceived of a marketing idea to focus on the newly constructed highway stretch called the “Redwood Highway.”

This new stretch of mostly dirt road went from San Francisco, California on Highway 101 to Crescent City California, and then east on Highway 199 to Grants Pass, Oregon, weaving through dense forests of redwood trees.

In order to get more attention to the highway, and fill hotels along the way, they had a pretty brilliant idea to hold a “Redwood Marathon” foot race on the highway stretch.

To gain even more media coverage they wanted to exploit the “Indian runner frenzy” at that time by limiting the entrants to Native Americans.

In March, Clyde Edmunson, the manager of the Redwood Empire Association, announced that a 480-mile race would be held in June and that a dozen Indian tribes had agreed to enter runners for prizes of $2500. In Oregon, The “Caveman Association” of Grants Pass, a club of civic boosters, also jointly sponsored the idea and they claimed that the event would be “the longest race of its kind in history.”

For the race, it was announced that official checking stations would be established along the Redwood highway to make sure that rules were strictly observed.

Inspectors would maintain a daily “log of the Marathon.”

The rules stated “Run when you can, walk when you wish and sleep if you have to. Finish in 15 days. Don’t accept lifts and don’t get off the Redwood Highway.” Each would be allowed a support car that carried their food, drink, clothes, and anything the runner wanted. Hotels along the way would provide rooms if wanted.

Prizes were set to $1000 for 1st place, $500 or 2nd, $300 for 3rd, $200 for 4th, and five prizes of $100 each for the next five finishers that reached the finish within 24 hours of 4th place. Several communities along the way also promised to put money into the pot, awarding those who first reached their various towns.

June 14, 1927, Flag Day, was chosen for the start of the race. Entry forms were sent out on May 17th.

The 1987 Reenactment

Sixty years after the race, in 1987, six alumni of Grants Pass High School, recreated the 1927 race as part of the high school’s centennial celebration. Running legs of 12-16 miles each, the relay team took six and a half days to run what was 460 miles on the modern Redwood Highway. One relay participant, Wayne Marrow said, “The longer we were out there, the more we realized there was a hero on this course, and it wasn’t any of us. There is a hero of this 1987 run, and he is this man right here, John ‘Mad Bull’ Southard.”

The Karuk

Oregon promoters hoped to find runners to beat those in California. The Grants Pass Chamber of Commerce sought to find nearby Karuk tribe runners from the town of Happy Camp, which was located 70 miles away in northern California on the Klamath River.

They later moved their training to the city park at Grants Pass to get used to running on pavement. John R. Harvey (1865-1943), the manager of Grants Pass chamber of commerce said, “Our runners are getting in fine shape and they are going strong. These Karuk boys are in the marathon to win. The Karuk Indians are noted for their endurance, and they boast that they are the only tribe able to run down the bear and the elk”

At 12:16 a.m. Mad Bull finished the Redwood Indian Marathon to win the $1,000 prize, plus town prizes.

He finished ten miles ahead of Flying Cloud and about 30 miles ahead of Melika. His finish time for the 480 miles was 7 days, 12 hours, and 34 minutes. It was reported, “Mad Bull came in smiling but worn out.”

The Oregon Cavemen who sponsored the Karuk runners rushed out and seized their victor, lifting him on their shoulders out of the reach of the crowd and took him away for recovery and sleep. He later said, “I could have run another five or six miles, maybe. Maybe not.”

That evening a banquet was given for the three top finishers. Melika, age 55, was “given an ovation and his face, usually stolid, occasionally broke into a smile.” Mad Bull’s brother, Fighting Stag finished the next morning at 8:52 a.m. running strongly.

Applications for this new “2021 JoCo Relief” fund are being facilitated by Southern Oregon Regional Economic Development, Inc. (SOREDI), Illinois Valley Community Development Organization (IVCanDO) and the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at Rogue Community College.

Award amounts will depend on the amount of funding available and the number of qualifying applications received. Applicants will be notified electronically of award status by September 20, 2021.

These funds are intended to be equally accessible to all businesses including the historically disadvantaged population groups (Asian, Black, Hispanic, Native American, and Women-owned businesses).

A

s the director of CASA of Josephine County, I am grateful to the Grants Pass Chamber for this opportunity to share about two very special teams.

Our non-profit Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) program helps protect local abused and neglected foster children. But we can’t do it without the support of community partners - like Ron Clack and his team at Lithia Chrysler Jeep Dodge of Grants Pass

CASAs monitor, investigate, facilitate, and advocate for their child’s safety in foster homes, in schools and in the community. Judges, child welfare workers and family members regularly request CASAs for these vulnerable children. Some caseworkers tell me that the only children they feel are truly safe while in foster care are those who have a strong CASA. And I can personally attest that our CASA advocates have saved children from very dangerous and dire circumstances.

Ron understands that CASA is a critically necessary program. But also, that it is woefully underfunded. We rely upon the financial support of caring community members like Ron and his Lithia crew to help us recruit, train and support our small-but-mighty army of highly-trained volunteer advocates.

Ron gets it. Ron lived it. His family regularly cared for foster children. So, he called me one day with an idea. “How about we do a month-long fundraiser for CASA. We will give you $100 for every car we sell during the month of May,” Ron says.

As I stumbled to express our gratitude, Ron humbly brushed my thanks aside. And thus, was born Ron’s Annual May Madness CASA Fundraiser – which has raised approximately $50K dollars over the past five years. Ron and crew ask nothing of CASA in return. They just want to help us protect these kids.
