“Concerts in the Park,” an initiative started by the Arts Council of Southern Oregon in 1986, has become a staple of the community’s cultural fabric in Grants Pass. The event, which has thrived under the auspices of the Grants Pass & Josephine County Chamber of Commerce since 1990, is a testament to the power of collaboration and community spirit.

Marla Kasdorf, professional musician, music teacher, and Medicare Insurance consultant, was the former Chairperson of the Arts Council of Southern Oregon in 1989 – 1990 that proposed the transition of the Concerts in the Park program to the Chamber’s oversight. The move was astutely recognized as a pathway for growth by Dwight Ellis, President & CEO of the Chamber at the time. This pragmatic decision was bolstered by Evergreen Federal Bank, stepping in as the Title Sponsor, among other local businesses, individuals and Chamber Committees offering their support.

The eclectic nature of the event has been its hallmark, showcasing a diverse range of genres with a focus on local bands. It has featured acts like the Rogue Valley Symphonic Band, various 4th of July Patriotic music groups, Gospel concerts, and unique offerings such as Cowboy Story Telling Time. Audiences have enjoyed everything from Blue Grass to Jazz, with notable musicians like John Neilson, Cur-

tis Salgado, Sound Stage Review, Indubious, Broadway Phil & the Shouters and Cajun sensation, Kelly Thibodeaux and Etouffee adding to the mix.

As Concerts in the Park enters its 38th season, it continues to serve as a free, family- friendly event most Tuesday nights in June and July.

“It is my absolute pleasure to be part of this time-honored community tradition of bringing people together through music. I am a so very thankful for the generous sponsors, skilled vendors, talented performers , and dedicated volunteers that continue to make this musical gift to the community possible,” says the Chamber’s Events and Programs Director, Christie Swafford.

The current venue at Midway Park at the Josephine County Fairgrounds offers a space for the community to come together to enjoy food, drinks, and the pleasure of each other’s company against a backdrop of live music. The enthusiasm for this series reflects the values of the Grants Pass community — a belief in the power of music to unite and uplift.

The event organizers and many dedicated volunteers are ever grateful for the continued use of the cool, shady grass of Midway Park. The Concerts in the Park series remains a collaborative effort, a gift of music and togetherness to the people of Grants Pass and its visitors, nurturing the community’s social and cultural landscape.

I have been a musician for over 50 years. Every band that I was ever part of, I was the guy who ran the sound. So after I was handed some smaller events in the Roseburg area, I decided to invest in some bigger equipment and that was about 30 years ago.

Since then my business has grown to where I am doing sound for Main stages at a few County Fairs, several Concert in the Park series in different cities, including Grants Pass and numerous other festivals and events.

Some of the artists I have done sound for include Pat Benatar, Little River Band, Robert Cray, Aaron Tippin, Zack Wilde, Uncle Cracker, Quiet Riot, Ty Curtis, Soundstage Review, Danielle Kelly, Hot Gossip, and many others.

A major part of DB Pro Audios success is the fact that I am a musician and I know what its like on “both sides of the microphone”. I speak “Musician”. I also help with booking acts for different events, because I know the groups that I have had on my stage, and I know where they will fit at other events.

The versatility of my equipment makes it possible for me to do partys of 50 to crowds of 5000 or more. Great sound gear along with video screens and projectors, we can handle almost any event. If I don’t have the gear, I know where to get it.

My goal is to make every event better than the last year.

Southern California born Trevor Hanks is a Singer/Songwriter who teaches music in the beautiful Pacific Northwest state of Oregon. At the age of ten, Trevor began playing guitar and wrote his first song when he was twelve. He found a love for punk rock. It was a chaotic, raw, and real way to escape the troubles at home. It soothed his soul and still does to this day. This later led to forming a band with his oldest friends that continued until the age of twenty. In his twenties, Trevor shifted the focus of music and became a Worship Pastor, but later came back in his early thirties, releasing singles such as “Everyone Needs a Little Love”, “When We Were Kids” and his latest single, “There’s No One Else” featuring his wife, Christina Hanks. Currently, Trevor plays with his backing band, The Blackburn Rebels, made up of his wife, brother-in-law, and a couple of his oldest friends from the first band he was in.

For March, our Young Professionals had the opportunity to tour Barnstormers Theatre. We thoroughly enjoyed hearing from the talented Executive Director, Niki Richards, as well as set designer and board member, Sharif Abdulrahman. Barnstormers is Oregon’s oldest continuously operating community theatre. We were surprised to learn that they got their name because they used to storm barns for performances. This non-profit theatre consists of a working board, actors, technicians, directors, designers, hosts, box office staff, and volunteers who contribute time and/or money to keep the arts strong in our community. They are thankful for the many community partnerships and donors which allows them additional rehearsal space and access to props and set pieces. We highly encourage everyone to patron this historic theatre and be sure to check out their “Face Your Fears, the Night of the return of the Living” Youth Sumer Camp, registration opens April 1st.

In April, we will be hosting a Networking Social at The Glass Forge Gallery & Studio. Friendly reminder, to join us the first Thursday in May for our quarterly trash cleanup for the Adopt A Street Program.
