Animal Care Apprenticeship This Apprenticeship is perfect for anyone wishing to work with animals and is one of the most fulfilling roles within the land based sector. The qualification will form part of the Apprenticeship framework for animal care. It is a work related, competencebased qualification. It reflects the skills and knowledge needed to do the job effectively and shows that the learner is competent in the area of work. The qualification offered lies within the animal care and welfare route. Skills developed will include: ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■

Control and restrain animals Maintain and develop performance Prepare and groom animals Prepare and provide feed for animals Promote and maintain the health and well-being of animals ■■ Provide controlled exercise opportunities for animals ■■ Select and prepare accommodation for animals. As an apprentice you will undertake the following qualifications and training over 2 years with one day’s attendance at college: ■■ City & Guilds Level 2 Diploma in workbased animal care ■■ Employer Rights and Responsibilities (ERR) ■■ Functional skills (English and maths). Assessment will be continuous and practical with a portfolio and multiple test paper (online).

NPTC City & Guilds Level 1 Diploma In Land Based Studies (Animal Care) Course Code: FGB46001 Level: 1 Duration: 1 year You need: 2 GCSEs F or above with one in English, a sound knowledge of both written and spoken English and an interest or previous experience with animals is desirable Methods of Assessment: Continual assessment and portfolio/online test Course Content Level 1 is a one year programme reflecting the skills and knowledge needed to carry out a job effectively under supervision. The qualification is made up of both core and optional units covering a wide range of knowledge areas: ■■ Assist with feeding and watering animals ■■ Assist with maintaining the health and well-being of animals ■■ Assist with the exercise of animals ■■ Assist with the handling and restraint of animals ■■ Assist with the preparation and maintenance of animal accommodation ■■ Develop performance in land based industries ■■ Safe and effective working practices in land based industries.

Level 1 Diploma in Work based Animal Care Course code: FGA00051 Level: 1 Duration: 1 year You need: 2 GCSEs (grade F or above) including one in English, a sound knowledge of spoken and written English and an interest or previous experience with small animals Method of Assessment: Coursework Portfolio Course Content This course will suit you if you have some knowledge and basic skills with small animals and to develop and practice skills for employment. A variety of units may be offered and may include: ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■

Assist with the care of animals Assist with animal accommodation Assist with feedstuffs for small animals Maintain the safety of self and others Principles of the movement and handling of small animals.

Opportunities Progression to a Level 2 in work-based animal care or employment within the Animal Care industry.

Opportunities Successful completion of this course will enable progression on to a Level 2 qualification, employment or Apprenticeships in Animal Care.
