Work-Life Balance
Marlene Achieves Master’s With Support From Work and Family
With her two adult sons off pursuing their own professional ambitions, Marlene Hammond began to focus on a long-time goal: earning her master’s degree. She had spent much of her life working and raising a family and she decided it was time to do something for herself.
Marlene, who has worked at Lincoln Financial for more than 30 years, knew that her employer offered a tuition benefit and encouraged employees to take on leadership opportunities.
As she considered her options, she looked for an online program that would allow her to complete her work on a flexible schedule. One day, her husband
I saw a photo of a student on the cover who looked a lot like me and decided to take a look.
Selecting the Right Program
As she thumbed through the course schedule, Marlene was intrigued by the college’s online M.S. in Leadership program. She had recently begun a new position at her employer as a senior consultant for operational risk and business resilience, and the M.S. Leadership program seemed like an opportunity to supplement the leadership skills she was developing in this role.
I decided I would try a class and see how it went. After one class, I was hooked.
One thing she found particularly exciting about the M.S. Leadership program was that she was taking classes with people of different ages and varied experiences. Hearing the perspectives of her classmates helped her to think outside the box and look at concepts from a different angle. While she had initially worried that it would be harder to build relationships in a remote classroom, she found that wasn’t the case.
I was still able to network with classmates virtually and connect with them on LinkedIn. I was even networking with classmates in Puerto Rico.
Flexibility and Support
From Family
Marlene also found that the flexibility of the online program helped to make the coursework more manageable. Sometimes she would wake up early and get some work in before starting her job for the day. Other times she would squeeze in some work on a Sunday evening. She was even able to take vacations and enjoy downtime.
Todd came home with one of Granite State College’s course schedules.I was worried that if I wasn’t sitting in a traditional classroom setting, I wasn’t going to be successful. But that just wasn’t the case.
She noted that Todd played an especially important role in supporting her throughout her education.
He did the cooking, laundry, and cleaning. He gave me quiet time to help me focus.
She also said Todd was her sounding board, helping her work through ideas or challenging concepts.
Seeing Immediate Benefits From Her Education
As Marlene continued to develop leadership skills, she began to see the benefits of her education in real time. In 2021, as she was nearing the end of her degree, Lincoln Financial promoted her to director of operational risk and business resilience. Then, in March of 2022, just months after completing her program, she was promoted again to associate vice president of operational risk. While she began as the sole member of her team, it soon grew to a team of five. Her leadership skills became vital resources for creating an effective and inclusive team environment.
Stepping Outside of Her Comfort Zone
She was surprised to learn that the class she was originally most intimidated by, Marketing for Nonprofits, turned out to be one of her most valuable experiences. As someone with limited experience in marketing, the course challenged her and provided valuable tools. In fact, she used the skills she learned in the course to create a vision and mission statement for her operational risk team. She even conducted a SWOT analysis of her employer that she shared with leadership.
You learn different pieces, but when you start to combine it all together, something remarkable happens. You start to see great results.
Each student in Granite State College’s master’s programs creates a final capstone project. Marlene knew she wanted to focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), which has been an important initiative at Lincoln Financial. But as she began to consider the specifics, she was overwhelmed by possibilities. Faculty member Dr. Joseph Mews supported Marlene in selecting a topic that aligned well with her values and interests.
My capstone instructor Joe helped me to focus and reminded me to trust the process. I’m really thankful for his guidance.
The subject that Marlene eventually settled on was “Developing an Effective Diversity and Inclusion Program.” She began with the simple strategy of identifying five basic things a DEI program needs for success. The more she researched, the more excited she was to learn about the topic and apply that learning in her professional life.
Since completing her capstone, Marlene has initiated a monthly discussion series in her department, “Delving into Diversity.” Marlene delivered the first presentation in the series, and now each of her team members is presenting their own topic.
Preparing for a Remote World Earning her master’s degree online provided Marlene and her employer with another unexpected benefit. At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Lincoln Financial quickly shifted to a remote work environment. Since then, the company’s New Hampshire employees have become permanently remote, a trend among employers across the globe.
Marlene played a central role in supporting the company as about 800 employees made the shift from
working in person to working at home. The skills and technologies she learned and used in her online classes helped her company make these changes effectively.
Online classes prepared me to work effectively in a remote world. As I was taking my classes online, I was helping my employer shift to a 100% remote environment.
Mentoring the Next Generation of Leaders
As Marlene looks toward her future, she hopes to use the skills and confidence she gained from her M.S. Leadership degree to inspire the next generation of leaders.
In addition to being a coach to her staff and a role model to her two sons and newborn grandson, Marlene volunteers as a mentor in the New Hampshire 4-H program.
Having been involved with the 4-H program since her childhood, Marlene now works with youth aged 12-18 to help them develop their leadership skills, including public speaking, resume writing, and interviewing.
I hope I can help the next generation see the leaders within themselves, just as I was inspired to lead by my education at Granite State College.

Meet Your Instructor
Tell us how you first learned about Granite State College.
I returned to college as an adult learner in January 2008 to complete my bachelor’s degree after a nearly 20-year hiatus.
I chose GSC because it offered a minor in Adult Learning and Development, a topic that interested me as a former software trainer aspiring to a career in corporate training.
What was most meaningful to you about your experience as a student?
The support and encouragement that I received from the faculty left a long-lasting impression on me. They really seemed to understand the challenges and need for flexibility of adult learners who have commitments outside of schoolwork. I can truly empathize with my students because I’ve been in their shoes, and I like to think I’m a better instructor for it.
When did you start teaching as a faculty member, and what course?
I started “pre-teaching” Psychology of Adulthood when I served as Chuck Bagley’s teaching assistant in Winter 2012 as my master’s capstone experience. The rest, as they say, is history –I’ve been teaching that course on my own since 2013, along with several other classes over the years.
Psychology of Adulthood is one of my favorite courses to teach. It’s so incredibly relevant because we (students and instructor alike) are living what we’re learning and can bring those experiences directly from our lives to the classroom.
I also especially enjoy teaching Principles of Psychopathology (formerly known as “Abnormal Psychology”), again because of personal experience: My brother has paranoid schizophrenia. He is my number-one reason for encouraging students into advocacy for people with psychological disorders and to work toward ending the stigma associated with mental illness.
What is special about GSC students?
Their dedication to finishing what they start! One of my students took the same class with me three times and passed the class on that third attempt. To me, that is the very definition of tenacity, and it’s what makes GSC students shine.
What words of encouragement can you offer adult students who aren’t sure if they can achieve their degree?
Yes, you can! I had the same hesitations. I decided I was tired of being someone else’s secretary, so I took a chance, did the work, and look at me now – teaching classes I love for my alma mater. My experience as an adult learner at GSC was literally life changing. You can do it, too.
“
I know from personal experience what it’s like to be an adult learner, and how skilled the GSC faculty, staff, and administrators were in supporting, encouraging, and at times challenging me to achieve my goals. My teaching hopefully reflects their same philosophy and the empathy I have for students.”

Financial Policies and Procedures
It is the student’s responsibility to become familiar with the College’s financial policies and procedures listed on this page. Please check with our staff if you have any questions and let us know if something arises which affects your learning experience. The College reserves the right to deny enrollment in any course when the prospective student lacks the necessary experience or prerequisites.
Advanced Funds to Obtain Books and Supplies for Federal Financial Aid Recipients
Federal aid (Pell, SEOG, Stafford, PLUS, Grad PLUS) recipients may be eligible to receive funds before the start of the term to cover the average cost for books and supplies if, after direct charges have been paid, there is a remaining credit balance on the student account. To be eligible, a student must be registered for classes and have aid ready to be disbursed at the time the Advanced Funds process runs (10 days prior to the term start). Checks are generally mailed the Tuesday prior to the start of the term. Direct deposits are generally made the Wednesday prior to the start of the term.* Students who have a previous account balance are not eligible for Advanced Funds. Students are responsible for repayment of funds if they are dropped from any or all coursework. Students may opt out of this process by submitting the Opt Out of Advanced Funds form.
*Holidays may delay the check and electronic refund process.
Student Financial Responsibility Agreement
Before you register for courses, you must submit a Student Financial Responsibility Agreement. To complete the form, visit WebROCK and select “Registration,” “Student Accounts,” or the “View Holds” menu options. Call the Student Accounts Office at 603-513-1330 with questions regarding the agreement.
Refund and Withdrawal Policies
You may drop a course during its add/drop period by calling or emailing your campus (from your granite.edu email address) or the Registrar’s Office. You can also visit granite.edu/registrarforms to find and download the Add/Drop Withdrawal form. Fax it to your campus or the Registrar’s Office at 603-513-1386. If a specific drop date is not noted, the standard Add/Drop deadline will apply.
Tuition and fees are 100% refundable if a student drops a course in accordance with the following limitations:
• 12-week courses: drop prior to the end of the second week of classes
• 6-week courses: drop prior to the end of the first week of classes
• Learning Contracts: The Registrar’s Office will notify registered students of the last dates to drop and withdraw
• Weekend course/Intensive courses: visit granite.edu/add-drop for specified dates
If you are receiving federal financial aid and withdraw from coursework in any given term, federal return calculations may apply. A pro rata schedule is used to determine the amount of federal aid a student has earned at the time of withdrawal up to the 60% point of each course length. You are responsible for any resulting account balance.
Withdrawals do affect your completion rate for Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) required to receive federal aid.
Questions About SAP? Visit: granite.edu/sap
