Hot on the heels of another record-breaking pantomime season, I’m excited to share brand new productions of My Beautiful Laundrette (with music by Blackpool’s own Pet Shop Boys), John Godber’s comedy Bouncers and the much loved classic Oh What A Lovely War!. With daring dance from James Wilton and Motionhouse, and an all-star cast in courtroom thriller Twelve Angry Men and Shawna Hamic and River Medway in the parody musical: Unfortunate; there’s so much to look forward to in 2024! Celebrating the new year with two major award wins: the UK Theatre Award for Excellence in Arts Education and the Children & Young People Now Award for Arts & Culture – recognising our groundbreaking work with children, young people and families in Blackpool and beyond; our work will accompany two major touring productions: The Boy at The Back of The Class and WonderBoy; both sure to fire the imagination of all those young at heart! You can get involved with more new projects including our first professionally produced Summer Youth Musical: Bugsy Malone; our playwrighting project with Northern Broadsides: Life in A Northern Town; and major new community project with internationally renowned Gary Clarke Company: Pride in Motion. None of this would be possible without our brilliant team of staff, volunteers, and Trustees including our two outgoing Chairs: Anthony Stone and Roger Lloyd Jones, who’ve given so time, expertise, and energy to championing The Grand. I shall miss them and their encouragement greatly, but we have talented successors in Alistair Armit and Bryan Lindop to continue supporting the growth of this wonderful theatre as we enter our 130th Birthday year! Thank you for continuing to make memories with us here at Blackpool Grand. We look forward to welcoming you back soon! With very best wishes for a happy new year.

BOUNCERS By John Godber Directed by Jane Thorton Join Les, Ralph, Judd and Lucky Eric as they relive a night in a Yorkshire disco in the 80s. Like a hideously funny Saturday Night Fever, the original Bouncers is back in town. Everyone will be there: the DJ, the girls, boys and the fish and chip van. Hilarious, vulgar, frenetic and highly physical, the play has become an international sensation, gathering awards from around the world. Often imitated but never beaten, the original Bouncers is eye - wateringly funny, celebratory and as relevant today as it ever was.

Oh What A Lovely War A cornerstone of modern musical theatre and one of the very greatest stage satires, Oh What A Lovely War is an extraordinary theatrical journey bringing to life the folly, farce and tragedy of the First World War. Brimming with timeless songs, razor-sharp satire and high jinks, Oh What A Lovely War is a hilarious, heart-breaking snapshot of life for those caught in the crossfire of conflict, a unanimous voice from the trenches and a timely warning from the theatre of war itself. Critically acclaimed and nominated for four Off West End Theatre Awards, this 60th anniversary production is a must see.

MY BEAUTIFUL LAUNDRETTE A Play by Hanif Kureishi Based on his screenplay Director Nicole Behan Original production by Nikolai Foster Sponsored by National Theatre Based on Hanif Kureishi’s iconic and Oscar-nominated screenplay, My Beautiful Laundrette is set in London during the Thatcher years and tells the story of young British Pakistani, Omar, who transforms his Uncle’s run-down laundrette into a thriving business. After being confronted by a fascist gang, Omar recognises school friend Johnny and uses their history to diffuse the situation. As they renovate the laundrette together, love blossoms between them. This culture clash comedy is also a subversive work of social realism, sprinkled with magic and joy running through the rich veins of Kureishi’s writing. This bold production explores cultural conflict, gender equality, class and generational strife, all presented against a funky backdrop of 80s music and culture with additional original music composed by the Pet Shop Boys’ Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe. My Beautiful Laundrette was developed with the support of the National Theatre’s Generate programme and is a Theatre Nation Partnership production, produced by Curve.

THE BOY AT THE BACK OF THE CLASS Based on the novel by Onjali Q. Rauf Adapted by Nick Ahad Directed by Monique Touko “A Lovely, Warm–Hearted celebration of courage and Friendship” The Guardian Winner Blue Peter Book Award 2019 Winner Waterstones Children’s Book prize 2019 Told from a child’s perspective, balancing heart and humour, The Boy at the Back of the Class highlights the power of friendship and kindness in a world that doesn’t always make sense and reminds us that everyone needs a place to call home. There used to be an empty chair at the back of the class, but now a new boy called Ahmet is sitting in it. He’s nine years old (just like me), but he’s very strange. He never talks and never smiles and doesn’t like sweets – not even lemon sherbets, which are my favourite! After learning that he has fled his own war-torn country, Ahmet’s classmates have ‘The Greatest Idea in the World’ – a magnificent plan to reunite Ahmet with his family. An unexpected and often hilarious adventure follows all topped off with a terrific twist.
