Discover Natalia Goncharova Exhibition at the Tate Modern

The Natalia Goncharova Exhibit at the Tate Modern is a great way to learn about one of the early twentieth century’s unsung artists. Goncharova was one of the leaders of the Russian avant-garde movement and had a major exhibit in Moscow at 32. She is best known for her involvement with the “Jack of Diamonds” group. The group

consisted of Goncharova’s partner, Larionov, as well as other prominent artists such as Petr Konchalovsky and Alexander Kuprin. During this period, the young artist became controversial for her increasingly provocative public stunts and behavior. At one point, she even appeared topless in public regularly, with only hastily drawn symbols on her chest providing cover. Throughout her life, she was constantly on the move, refusing to be tied down to any one place or artistic movement. In 1915, she moved to Geneva to design costumes for a ballet commissioned by Sergei Diaghilev. By 1921 she was living in Paris as a set designer for the theater. In between productions, she designed fashion for Maison Myrbor, a clothing store on the Rue Vincent. aspect of her wide-ranging body of work, as well as some of her influences. Room One, for instance, highlights her identification with the culture and people of rural Russia. Along with her paintings, the exhibit also includes a traditional costume from the area. Room 10 features her set designs, costumes and sketches from some of the ballet productions she worked on.
