Welcome to the 34th Annual Grand Gala featuring Procol Harum performing with the Delaware Symphony Orchestra and the Opera Delaware Chorus on Saturday, December 4th, 2010 at The Grand Opera House in Wilmington, Delaware!

Letter from the Chairman The Board of Directors, Grand Trustees, and staff of The Grand Opera House dedicates the 2010 Grand Gala to James H. Gilliam, Sr., in recognition of his tremendous contributions as an activist and advocate for The Grand, Wilmington, and the citizens of Delaware. Thank you!

Procol Harum Sponsored by Fred Dawson On November 18, 1971, Procol Harum created a seminal moment in poprock history by performing with The Edmonton Symphony Orchestra and the Da Camera Singers at Jubilee Auditorium in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Widely credited as the first band to bridge the gap between modern pop-rock and the classical music world, the recording of that concert went on to sell millions of albums and opened the door for the marriage of pop music to symphony programs all over the world. For the 2010 Grand Gala, Procol Harum will be re-creating that decisive event with the aid of the Delaware Symphony Orchestra and the Opera Delaware Chorus in an event long in the making. “Both The Grand, the Delaware Symphony Orchestra, and Opera Delaware have been seeking to present a joint event of this magnitude for the past few years,” said The Grand’s Executive Director, Steve Bailey. “When you have the region’s best and biggest house band, you naturally want to show them off, and there could be no better vehicle than the re-creation of the music from that legendary concert by Procol Harum and The Edmonton Symphony Orchestra.” “The musicians, board and staff of the Delaware Symphony Orchestra are thrilled to be a part of the Grand Gala this year,” added Lucinda Williams, Executive Director of the Delaware Symphony Orchestra. “Through this collaboration with The Grand and guest artist Procol Harum, our exceptional orchestra musicians will get the chance to step out of the ‘classical box’ and show they have the stuff to rock it out!” Procol Harum continues to enjoy well-earned fruits of its prolific recording career. Fortytwo years from the release of their monumental smash hit “A Whiter Shade of Pale,” the symphonic-rock legends saw their signature song being awarded the accolade of the most-played single of the past 75 years. The song was also listed at #57 on Rolling Stone’s “500 Greatest Songs of All Time.” Founding member Gary Brooker – who has worked with such notable artists as George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Eric Clapton, Kate Bush, and Wings – firmly believes that the band’s continued success is tied to its soulful sound. “We don’t do pop songs as such,” he says. “Procol Harum is a soul and blues band which has these other influences because of the people who are there. When we finally do it, it comes out differently. ‘A Whiter Shade of Pale’ wouldn’t have been such a big hit, nor ‘A Salty Dog’ or many other songs, unless they’d had soul.”

Executive Committee Dear Friends of the Grand: Welcome to the 34th Annual Grand Gala, a celebration of Wilmington’s premier venue for the arts, culture, and entertainment—the Grand Opera House. From the building’s impressive cast iron facade to the incredible acoustics of its 1,208-seat theatre, the Grand Opera House is truly one of Wilmington’s most prized landmarks. Yet as impressive as the building itself is, it is the world-class entertainment that keeps audiences returning year after year. The Grand truly excels at presenting exceptional and diverse performances, with each season more exciting than the previous. What better way to honor the glorious past, present, and future of the Grand Opera House than with the Annual Grand Gala—an elegant affair befitting such a remarkable institution? The Grand’s long commitment to exceptional entertainment, educational outreach, and community enrichment is indeed worthy of recognition! Planning an event as wonderful as the Grand Gala is no easy task. I commend the hard work of the friends, volunteers, and sponsors who make this affair a success. Their tireless efforts and generosity are essential to the continued success of this event. Again, on behalf of the citizens of Wilmington, I welcome you to the Grand Gala and thank you for your support of this fine institution…just another reason why Wilmington is “in the middle of it all!” Sincerely,
