A CASE FOR THE HOLIDAYS

Whether hosting a dinner party or gifting the host, these picks are the perfect bottles to have on hand.

I

love the holiday season for so many reasons, the abundance of food and wine being one of them. This is a time when I wish I could fill two cases of wine for this column, as there is twice the number of opportunities to drink, open and give a bottle. The holidays are sentimental and so is wine for many people, including Cindie Barker, food and beverage manager for the St. Charles Yacht Club in south Fort Myers. She listened to her heartstrings as well as her palate when helping me fill this month’s case.

Picking only a handful of wines each for December was a fun but challenging task, one we enjoyed over a bottle of Tablas Creek Cotes de Tablas Blanc ($30), a beautiful Rhone blend from Paso Robles that has some weight and a holiday food feel. It’s also a clever way to sneak in an extra pick. While most of Cindie’s choices stem from unforgettable experiences (many of which I have been fortunate to share with her), mine come more from a platform of gifting.

Limerick Lane Rosé ($24) » I’m very fond of the saying “rosé everyday” and always have a selection of these dry wines on my restaurant lists. I look for a rosé that has character, and the ones from Limerick Lane always fill the bill. The bottle is striking, so is the heart (and the looks) of winemaker Jake Bilbro. His commitment to family, farming and winemaking comes through in his awardwinning, low production wines. Last year I managed to scoop up the last case of this rosé in Florida. I sold a few in the restaurant and drank the rest…shhhhh.

Post House, Missing Virgin Red Blend ($25) » There was a brief time in my food and wine career where I sold South African wines, and I fell in love with the region — I still love it. While I enjoy the chardonnays coming from this area, I particularly like red blends like the Missing Virgin from Post House. Named after a postage stamp, it is a combination of Petit Verdot and Pinotage. To me, this is just a sexy wine.

Bruno Paillard Rose ($70) » I agree with Cindie’s rosé everyday statement as well as her love of bubbles for the holidays and year-round. In fact, I was with her in Champagne, and one of my other favorite tasting experiences came at Bruno Paillard. This winery consistently cranks out high quality wines that veer toward the dry side. This one is not only pink but also extra brut. Some of the reserve wines used in this date back to 1985. Bubbles from here mature a little longer than typical before being released, resulting in complexity and depth. I’m salivating.

Mercer Estates Chardonnay, Horse Heaven Hills, 2016 ($17) » When it comes to American chardonnay, Napa Valley gets the lion’s share of the love as well as the high price tags. Turning to Washington State, Mercer is producing a fresh, clean chardonnay that doesn’t weigh you down in terms of price and/or oak. This did go through malolactic fermentation, giving it a rich texture, but it still has some zip and zest, even some cotton candy. I particularly like the apple flavors, perfect for the season.
