Cesar Chavez was a humble man who stood for disadvantaged farm workers in the U.S. However, few people know that Chavez built alliances with Filipino farmworkers, in particular Larry Itliong and Philip Cruz, as Chavez became the international face of the movement. Dr. Ange-Marie Hancock is Associate Professor of Political Science and Gender Studies at USC. There are more than 84 million Millennials and surveys repeatedly show that they are far more liberal on social issues than older generations. However, following the Great Recession, a more profound question persists: what constitutes an inclusive, egalitarian democracy? Tolerance, one of our most profound democratic values, may no longer be sufficient in 2014 to knit the fabric of our society together. Presented by Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies and Center for the Study of Genders and Sexualities.

Learn how preparation and practice can help you land the job.

Dr. Alia Al-Saji, who is Associate Professor of Philosophy at McGill University in Montreal, will explore and critically analyze the view that stereotyping of Muslims in Western settings is “cultural racism.” Focusing especially on attitudes toward Muslim women, she will discuss the politics that frame such Western cultural debates and the processes that underlie cultural racism. Presented as part of Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Initiative on Gender, Sexuality, and Feminisms in Middle Eastern Communities, and the Ann Garry and Sharon L. Bishop Feminist Endowed Lecture Series.

The 1918 so-called “Spanish” Influenza reached its deadly peak in every country just as World War I was coming to an end. Dr. Elinor Accampo, Professor of History, University of Southern California, will place the flu in a transnational context, focus on the interaction of the war and the flu in peoples’ experiences and perceptions, and seek to understand how this interaction contributed to an “amnesia” about the flu that developed in its wake.
