Catching a Big Time: Fishing the Northwest Grady-White Club Derby By Gwen Edwards
Grady-White’s Gwen Edwards, aka ”Queen of Clubs,” is a familiar name to Grady-White Owners’ Club members who know her as the go-to person for assistance in start-ups and ongoing factory support of club sponsored events. She, along with other factory representatives, attends dealer and Owners’ Club events at every opportunity. How better to celebrate a slice of the Grady Life than fishing, cruising, and adventuring on the water with owners like you? In late May the Northwest Grady-White Club, sponsored by Jacobsen’s Marine of Seattle, WA, held its annual lingcod derby out of Roche Harbor on San Juan Island. Eighteen boats and more than 50 club members gathered for this two-day event. This North Carolina girl was invited to fish aboard club commodore Larry Post and wife J’Anna’s Express 330, Sakana. One thing I quickly learned: if you want to boat in the Northwest, rain gear is a necessity!
Larry and J’Anna picked me up at the Skyline Marina on Fidalgo Island near Anacortes to begin our run to Roche Harbor. It was in the upper 50s, overcast and misty…the scenery was just breathtaking. We passed Burrows and Allan islands and headed north to Obstruction Pass, then rounded the north side of Shaw Island and continued past Wasp and Jones islands. Along the way we stopped at the Posts’ secret spot to retrieve their shrimp pots. continued on page 2…

Derby…continued from page 1 These were nothing like East Coast shrimp. Actually, they’re called prawns–many over seven inches–and are a beautiful pink with spots. Upon arrival at Roche Harbor Resort, former commodore Rob Powers and family greeted us. With their assistance we put some “Grady touches” on the tent reserved for the club gatherings. Then everyone met for hors d’oeuvres followed by dinner and the welcome meeting where the commodore reviewed derby details. Weigh-in would be between three and four o’clock Saturday. In the case of a tie, the first boat in would take the win. I fished in Sakana along with the Posts and Paul and Jean Pastis. We headed out at eight o’clock toward Canada, passing Spieden Island and cutting between Stuart and Waldron islands. Once we arrived at the “lucky spot” it was time to catch those lingcod. Larry showed us how to jig for them. We had the lines in just 15 minutes when the first bite happened. I had the rod in play, and it was so heavy we all knew it was ”Walter,” like Henry Fonda’s big fish on Golden Pond. Larry and Paul asked me several times if I needed help reeling in but I insisted on doing it myself. How would it look
for the Grady rep to wimp out? Unfortunately, Walter turned out to be an octopus–a very large octopus! We were disappointed this wasn’t a money fish. The octopus got our adrenaline going and we had a great day of fishing. It was cold and rainy but we were so excited we hardly noticed. Having a ski suit on sure helped! The Posts are avid fishermen and knew where to put us on the lingcod. Within just a few hours we boated five, the limit for our boat, and released two undersized ones along with rock cod and of course the octopus. While fishing we saw sea lions and an orca. In summary, I experienced seven-inch prawn, an octopus, rock cod, lingcod, sea lions and an orca. Not a bad day on the water! We arrived back at the dock early in case we had the big one. Many boats arrived before three o’clock just in case there was a tie. There was quite a bit of excitement during the weigh in. Bill Buckingham aboard the Powers family’s boat, Island Time, took first place, and Blake Powers took third while Rob Powers took fourth. Young Melissa Neumann on Playin’ Hookey took second place. Our Sakana crew Paul and Jean Pastis won fifth and sixth place respectively. Three-year-old

Kasey Neumann took first place in the children’s division, and six-year-old Toby Neumann placed as well. After a fantastic clambake dinner it was time for the awards ceremony and door prize giveaways. At the ceremony Larry presented me with a beautiful glass octopus that I have proudly
displayed on my desk at Grady-White Boats. The weekend was a wonderful time to connect with friends old and new, and the Northwest Grady-White Club did a marvelous job making me feel welcome! It was sad to part ways on Sunday, but we all look forward to the next Grady club happening!

Rich Libin, assistant harbormaster of Bourne, MA, provided helpful lessons ranging from navigation practices to safety gear checklists. Members of the Somers Point GradyWhite Club got together at the home of president Al Cortese and wife Tina in Ocean City for a Friday night potluck dinner in May. A Big Ahoy to Two New Owners’ Clubs in Florida!
LAKE ERIE GRADY-WHITE CLUB members attended a basic marine weather forecasting seminar in March. They learned that
complex weather forecasting algorithms can be used to locate the largest, most active walleye in a given region. This club is sponsored by South Shore Maine of Huron, OH.

Bill Eckerle’s DreamMaker placed second with a 50" king, and Dave Staver’s Sue Sea was third at 49.50". This was the club’s 20th semi-annual tournament. The Tarpon Coast Grady-White Club saw 32 members in attendance at a meeting social in April at the Laishley Crab House in Punta Gorda, FL. Sea Tow representative Captain Rick made the feature presentation. All present were surveyed to gauge preferences for number of meetings to be held during the year, interest in the club website and Flickr albums as well as the annual dinner. Planning is afoot for the trips and outings schedule. Ingman Marine, Port Charlotte, FL, sponsors this club.
The Tidewater Grady-White Club toured the National Weather Station in Wakefield, VA, to learn about forecasting and followed up with lunch at the Virginia Diner. Norfolk Marine, Norfolk, VA, sponsors this club. The Vero Beach Grady Bunch is packing their sea bags and soon will head for the Abacos for their annual Bahamas cruise. They've been making this grand adventure as a group since 1988! Their motto: “Let the good times roll!” Stay tuned for a report on the 2013 excursion in the fall edition of Anchorline. Vero Marine Center, Vero Beach, FL, sponsors this club.
The Northern Gulfcoast Grady-White Club, sponsored by MarineMax of Pensacola, had a kickoff social and docktails in April, with the group gathering on Dr. Richard and Edie Kearley’s Express 360. Carol Symeon and Sandra Pope brought dishes to share and were awarded Grady-White Top Chef aprons. This club is looking forward to group overnighting, fishing and Grady camaraderie! The First Coast Grady Club, sponsored by MarineMax of Jacksonville held its organizational meeting in April. Dana Mullins was named club commodore, and is looking forward to planning great events and getaways in the Jacksonville area. The first official event planned is a June lunch at waterfront restaurant Nippers.

From Our Facebook Inbox: Grady-White shared Jeff Rohlfing’s photo. Things finally started looking like spring here in Michigan. With the forecast calling for temps in the mid 60s and clear sunny skies, I pulled the new-to-me Tournament 190 out for its first outing. This was actually the first time I’d EVER been on the water in a Grady-White. I bought the boat in January when everything was frozen so there wasn’t a sea trial. I had the boat inspected in Arkansas and then got it up here to Michigan. I am super happy with the boat. I owned and restored center console Boston Whalers for the last 20 years. Now with two young kids we needed something to fit that use better. The dual console layout of the 190 was a home run, perfect for the kids to run around in and always be protected. Now I am really looking forward to summer and making my Grady into a showpiece and getting my family out on the water!
