How to Get Your Life Together (For Finals) Pornnapa Huang (coco)

As the school year is slowly ending, the weight of the finals season is slowly crawling in. You know, those nights where you study last minute and freak out over your dead GPA. It’s coming lads. But fear not, I am able to help our readers. Unfortunately, persistence is still key to success, and this is not a 100% guide to studying. However, I’m here to point out the brutal truths you must face, and how to find alternatives that can save your grades when you’re not motivated. Trust me, I’m a seasoned procrastinator. I put the pro in procrastination; you can even ask The Howl members. So believe in yourself, you got this.

Don’t waste time choosing study music. This is one of the most time-consuming parts of studying. You either have music you can focus to….. or not. It’s finals season! 20% of your grade is at stake here! You can find music at a more flexible time, so please, just open that study review document.

Take out your stuff. Sometimes, the reason people procrastinate is because the materials they need to work with aren’t in front of them. I totally get that it’s hard to drag that energy to zip open your backpack, but just do it. Your notebooks and pencil case might be the only way you’re going to pay attention to your schoolwork.

14 | THE HOWL | May 2018

Do your homework. There’s still time before studying season rolls in, and teachers might have work to give. Put extra effort in your homework this time. It technically improves your grades as well as letting you study the material that’s probably on the test. It’s a win-win situation.

Look at your past projects as a refresher. I really doubt that anyone takes notes in class, especially when you’re not a 4.0 GPA and straight A student. Most of the notes people have are from math and/or science, so the way to study other subjects is through projects. Most of our projects are powerpoint presentations, so they are easy to access. Plus you can think back to the nights you’ve spent on writing the information last minute, it’ll help you remember important material for finals.

15 | THE HOWL | May 2018

Go. To. Sleep. Many of my classmates complain about not getting enough sleep. I still do that too, but mainly because I procrastinated on sleeping. For example, scrolling through your social media or playing games. After all that, you’ll realise it’s late at night, and you’re going to get 5 hours of sleep. Instead of sitting around doing nothing with a load of homework in front of you, just go straight to bed. In fact, sleeping helps your brain remember more, so the bottom line is: if you’re going to procrastinate, do it the right way.

Mind your own business. Unless you’re asking for help on some material, talking about finals with your friends is probably going to drag you down. Everyone’s going to groan and be super unmotivated, and so will you. I’m not saying that you can’t talk to your friends, but it’s going to affect your attitude towards the work, especially if you’re already very unmotivated. This also applies after the test. Don’t immediately ask for other people’s answers on the test. It’ll make you paranoid, and it’ll make others paranoid as well. Just give yourself a pat in the back and go treat yourself for surviving finals.

Horoscope of the Month: Taurus An-Ni Liao (Annie)

Time period: April 20 - May 21 Element: Earth Ruling Planet: Venus Symbol: Bull

Celebrities and Famous People: • Adele • Elizabeth II • Dwayne Johnson

Character Traits: In our opinion, we think Taurus’ main characteristic is “Persistence.” Once Tauruses set their eyes on something, they would put all of their effort towards it until they achieve it. Therefore, they have strong spirit and determination while doing their work, and are not likely to give up. Another remarkable trait of Taurus is having a clear sight of reality, which is why we can always hear people talking about how Taurus loves money and wealth. Being realistic is not their fault; instead, it makes their financial advice more reliable and helpful. 24 | THE HOWL | May 2018

Compatibility with other horoscopes: Let’s not set any limits for compatibility, because you could love anyone without having to care if their horoscopes match with yours. However, there are some suggestions that Taurus would get along well with the following… Earth: Virgo & Capricorn- due to the fact that horoscopes of the same element could get along nicely. Water: Cancer & Pisces—due to the fact that Earth needs Water… (what a nice explanation…) • Cancer and Taurus can understand each other without words and develop mutual independence in their relationship. • Pisces, on the other hand, is likely to have a romantic relationship with Taurus. There are lots of fireworks and passion between those two, creating a more loving atmosphere. Anyway, it doesn’t matter what horoscope you/they are; the most important thing is to love what you love no matter what. :)

25 | THE HOWL | May 2018

How We Conclude Taurus (in one sentence): “A thoughtful horoscope, always thinks before acting; therefore, they won’t easily trust people, only trust themselves.”

Interesting stories about them: “I personally think they are frugal…on everything.” “They are money lovers, but also generous to spend their money for the loved ones…” “He has an eye on small things...” “Tender and Stubborn, that’s the way you are.”

Quotes: “People are starting to go on about my weight, but I'm not going to change my size because they don't like the way I look.” —Adele “We lost the American colonies because we lacked the statesmanship to know the right time and the manner of yielding what is impossible to keep.” —Elizabeth II

26 | THE HOWL | May 2018

“Success isn't always about 'Greatness', it's about consistency. Consistent, hard work gains success. Greatness will come.” —Dwayne Johnson

AP Chinese Exam Tips for Mother Tongue Students Yu-Lou Wei (maggie)

For most freshmen that are taking Chinese Mother Tongue this year, the AP Chinese exam will be your first AP exam to tackle. As a Junior, I am quite worried about studying for my 2 AP exams, which remind me of my freshman year; the anticipation accompanied with slight nerves before taking the exam are indeed unsettling. This is why I wanted to write this article. I am not a grader of the AP Chinese exam, nor a Chinese teacher, but I have some of my first hand experiences to offer. To gain some credibility, I did get a 5 last year! Hahaha…

Don’t Stress By the end of April, your Chinese teacher should have told you the basic format of the exam. You might have even heard from upperclassmen that not getting a 5 is embarrassing for a mother tongue student. However, don’t let all of the talk get in to your head. A lot of the AP Chinese exam, especially the famous speaking section where you have to immediately answer a question, is about your ability to formulate conversation quickly. Don’t overthink this section. Since we are mother tongue students, or even foreign tongue students that have learned at TCIS for a long time, it is normal to have conversations in Chinese. You don’t necessarily have to include long idioms in your answer, but try to use compound sentence structures and some advanced vocabularies to showcase your fluency in the language. 28 | THE HOWL | May 2018

Make Sure The Technological Malfunctions are Limited to the Least Degree. Before you take the official test, your Chinese teacher will take you to the AP language test room (computer lab in the library) to test out headphones, microphones, computers, keyboards, and run the exam disc through. Because our headphones in school are not new, some can have problems recording your voice or playing what the disc says. There have been precedences where students in our school lost 30 minutes or more of their exam because of technological malfunctions. We might not be familiar with using the desktop now since we usually use laptops, but be aware that it is easy to accidentally bump buttons on the CPU (the big box under the table) with your legs, so don’t swing around in your chair out of nervousness! When choosing a computer to use, choose the one that is most comfortable to you, meaning that the keyboard feels nice to type, the space feels good, you do not claustrophobic, etc. There might be accidents on the actual test day. If it happens, immediately raise your hand and find the administrator that will be present in the exam room.

Writing Section Transition words and advanced vocabularies are the main areas that will make your writing meet the standard for a 5 on the AP Chinese exam. Remember that not having mistakes in your writing, such as accidentally typing in the wrong character for a word, is important.

29 | THE HOWL | May 2018

Therefore, make sure you have 5 minutes to go over your answer once it is finished. Many mother tongue students tend to write a lot in the writing section, and in the end leave minimal time to read it over. Of course, you should include details, but don’t go over 4 sentences for each picture, or you could be cutting it close on time!

Speech Section Last year, the question that I got during the speech section was to describe one cultural activity during a Chinese holiday. I talked about eating 湯圓, or sweet dumplings. There are two extreme that many encounter during the speech section: One is not having enough to talk about for the entire 2 minutes; the other is talking too much and getting cut off. For the first extreme, try to write down ideas to talk about in bullet points first. Then think of 1 to 4 sentences for each bullet point. The two parts of the speech that should be thoroughly planned out are how you are going to open and close your speech. Come up with and try to remember 1-2 sentences for each the introduction and the conclusion. Also, it would be beneficial to think of some transition words that can be used to connect different ideas. During the body of your speech, look at the bullet points and go down in order. Look at the timer at intervals during your speech as well. At about 20 seconds left, begin closing the speech, summarizing your main ideas and then stating your conclusion. Best of lucks for everyone taking the AP exams! Hope this article helps you in your exam!

Chronic Stress: Let's Talk About It Phimkanya Liu (Gib)

Hi! I know most of you would slide past this page as quickly as you can because I would do the same! Who would want to read this many words at a time like this? You guys are tired; it’s hard and painful to wake up every morning, especially for the AP students. Some people might have thought of something along the lines of: “I’m tired.” “Why do I have to do this? It’s worthless!” or “Why can’t I do anything good?” If you are having these thoughts, then maybe you are burning out. You may be thinking, “What is burnout? Is it something like exercising?” Haha, nope! It’s not related to exercising. How could I say anything related to exercising if I hate working out? Burnout is a state of chronic stress. (Side note: Chronic stress is “any stress that the body is subjected to on a regular basis or on a single occasion with lasting negative effects.” (coreonehealth.com)) So let’s get started with the symptoms shall we? I suggest you have a piece of paper beside you and check if your symptoms are similar to the lists below.

Symptoms of physical and emotional exhaustion: • Fatigue: You will feel tired the whole day every day. • Insomnia: It must be quite familiar for a psychology student. Basically, you will have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep. 31 | THE HOWL | May 2018

• Forgetfulness/impaired concentration and attention: You will lack focus and be forgetful • Physical symptoms: The mind is connected with the body, you might get chest pain, abnormal heartbeat, shortness of breath, gastrointestinal pain (pain in stomach and intestines), dizziness, fainting, and/or headaches. • Increased illness: You will get sick more frequently, and you will also take a longer time to recover from sickness. • Loss of appetite: Sounds good right? But this is not a joke. In the latter stages, you might lose most of your appetites. This can lead to severe malnutrition if left unchecked. • Anxiety: In the beginning, it will be mild, but later on it might be so serious that it keeps you from doing anything. • Depression: Do I need to explain? Maybe I should… you just feel sad and hopeless. If it has become serious, please please please please please seek professional help immediately. Those of you who never have it will never know how challenging it is to fight depression alone. If you are depressed right now, just remember, you are not alone… no one is ever alone in this world. • Anger: Pretty much self-explanatory: you just have angry outbursts and serious arguments. If anger gets to the point where it turns to thoughts or acts of violence towards family or coworkers, seek immediate professional assistance.

32 | THE HOWL | May 2018

Symptoms of cynicism and detachment: • Loss of enjoyment: You don’t feel happy with what you’ve once enjoyed doing anymore. • Pessimism: You see the world negatively, even though you were a positive person before. • Isolation: You try to avoid society; not just the introvert type, you might feel angry if someone tries to talk to you. • Detachment: You feel disconnected from others or from your environment. It results in removing yourself emotionally and physically from your job and other responsibilities. You may call in sick often, stop returning calls and emails, or regularly come in late.

Symptoms of ineffectiveness and lack of accomplishment: • Feelings of apathy and hopelessness: you will feel that nothing is going right or nothing matters. As the symptoms worsen, these feelings may worsen, making it seem like "what's the point?" • Increased irritability: You will feel ineffective, unimportant, useless, and an increasing sense that you're not able to do things as efficiently or effectively as you once did. If this thought continues, you could potentially harm your relationships and carrier. • Lack of productivity and poor performance: That’s that the chronic stress will keep you from doing your work, and it will worsen your symptoms.

If you are experiencing some of the symptoms is the list above, try to manage your stress. Unlike seasonal depression, burnout won’t go away after some time. You have to change the way you live and your stress management. It sounds hard… and it is hard, but surprisingly you can change your lifestyle little by little. One drop of water can cause a ripple on the water. Eventually, you can recover from burnout.

Students who are experiencing struggles and difficulties in their academic and personal lives are always welcome to turn to a friend or trustworthy adult. If you’d like to work on a solution but don’t know where to start, reach out to someone in your community. As always, student services at TCIS are always willing to support your needs!

1. “Your dog can smell your feelings.” (cesarsway.com) “At some point in history…dogs learned to decode human nonverbal language. The better they anticipated our thoughts and feelings, the more they were rewarded with food, shelter and affection.” (doghealth.com)

2. “Dogs curl up in a ball when they sleep due to an age-old instinct to keep themselves warm and protect their abdomen and vital organs from predators.” (petfinder.com) So it’s not that they try to be cute. Still, they are very cute.

4. “In Paulding, Ohio, it is legal for a police officer to bite a barking dog to keep it quiet.” (animalplanet.com) I hope the dogs won’t mind…

7. “Smiling at a dog may make him feisty: dogs see your smile not as friendly body language, but detect your "bearing teeth" as a sign of aggression.” (animalplanet.com) Your dog might know your smile means you are happy, but this might not apply to other dogs. So safety first!

8. “Dogs actually do sweat, but only through the pads on their paws.” (animalplanet.com) Despite popular belief that dogs sweat through panting or dogs don’t sweat (which in fact isn’t true - they remove excess heat by panting, not sweat by panting), dogs actually do sweat but through their paws. So you may have two paws to think about it. 9. “Dogs aren't colorblind but their eyes don't have receptors for red. They see in shades of black and white and also in shades of blue and yellow.” (care.com) There’s also TV for both cats and dogs; your pups might enjoy it. 10. “Puppies and kittens can be adopted as early as 8 weeks of age. Until then, they should stay with their moms and littermates.” (mspca.org) It varies between 8 to 10 weeks. It’s very tempting, but you shouldn’t get them before they are ready!
