COUNTRY CLUB MANAGER’S REPORT Desert Princess Golf & Country Club continues to stripe it down the middle... Now that the Men's Cactus Classic is upon us, the Desert Princess Golf and Country Club is poised to hit new heights in 2014. The club leadership, staff and membership have combined efforts to invigorate the environment and lifestyle at the Desert Princess. Leon's at Desert Princess has hosted many successful events this year, most recently with a spectacular Valentine's Day celebration. Leon's has now taken it to a whole new level by bringing "Top Shelf" events to our club, such as the Winemaker's Dinner. Make sure you stop by to get a taste of the culinary delights from the Desert Princess's new Executive Chef, Alex Cabrera. His many talents are sure to wow your taste buds. The Golf Club now switches gears from the world class car show held here last week, into the heart of our golf schedule and "The Cactus Classic". Our golf club is fast becoming known as the hidden gem that we've all known and enjoyed for years. Our 27 holes of championship golf and fun-loving atmosphere at the club have proven to have something for everyone within and outside of our community. The Tennis Club is reaching new levels of its own through our numerous College and Junior events. The community tennis vibe is jumping due the tennis season peaking here in the Coachella Valley and our Tennis Center has programs for all ages and talent levels. If you haven't visited the courts lately, stop by and check it out... there is fun for all. It is spring and NO better time to get a jump on your fitness program for 2014. The amenities of the Fitness Center and Spa are at an all-time high. The Fitness Center and Spa is open to and designed for you, our

community members. It has all of the state of the art equipment needed to keep you in shape...looking and feeling your best! It doesn't take but a short drive throughout our community and golf course to see the attention to detail and massive range of beauty that our Grounds Crew Team provide for us on a daily basis. Their efforts surely don't go unnoticed by those from outside our community and are to be applauded. Many improvements ahead will keep the Desert Princess among the upper echelon of pristine golf and tennis communities in the valley. The leadership of the Desert Princess Golf and Country Club strive for perfection on a daily basis. These efforts will continue to be the backbone, supported by a progressive movement in 2014. One example of that is the upcoming unveiling of the newly designed website. It will offer a fresh new look and feel, with far greater, more in-depth information needed to help homeowners and visitors keep up and to properly represent what our club has to offer. The Desert Princess Golf and Country Club has set the bar extremely high and we look forward to continuing that tradition. FROM THE PRO SHOP Over the past few months the Pro Shop is missing range baskets and range tokens. The Pro Shop would appreciate your help in getting any missing range baskets and range tokens returned. Jonas and his staff have done a terrific job maintaining the golf course this year. It is up to all of us to assist the maintenance staff in this critical endeavor. All golfers can aid in keeping the course in its current condition by: Filling divots with sand, repairing ball marks, and following proper cart rules. All carts at Desert Princess should be registered at the HOA office. Registration is free and just takes a few minutes to attain the needed information regarding carts. Privately owned carts should never be driven by minors on property at Desert Princess and Security will be monitoring this closely in the upcoming months. Carts on the golf course should abide by the following guidelines and rules: Carts should stay on paths around the green and tees. Golfers with Handicap flag privileges should always stay at least 30 feet from greens, use the cart path next to greens whenever possible and never have your cart between the green and any bunkers or water hazard. Please remember Handicap flags are a privilege not a right!!! Violation of these conditions may result in the loss of the privilege. Remember, someone is always watching at Desert Princess! GREENS COMMITTEE Desert Princess, along with other valley golf courses, businesses and residents need to address the issue of water use as the supplies in the valley are diminishing. One only needs to read the articles The Desert Sun (Aquifer at Risk) has published on a regular basis in the last several months to recognize there is a need to conserve water and that we must all do our part to protect this limited resource. Channel 2 in the desert has also run several features on the water crisis. In order to facilitate water conservation, Desert Princess needs to update its 30-year-old irrigation system which feeds not only the golf course but the condos and villas as well. This is not a golfer versus non-golfer issue, but a Desert Princess community issue that will affect all of us adversely if we do not develop a plan of action to update our irrigation system and to conserve water. Currently we are wasting a lot of money each year trying to repair and maintain a failing system. This money could better be spent toward a new system that would operate under warranty for one to two years. Jonas, during his tenure, has reduced the area needed to be irrigated by 10-15 acres in the wash. But much more needs to be done. In the last three years, Jonas, members of his crew, the Greens Committee and other Desert Princess employees and homeowners have formed a team that has analyzed all aspects of installing a new irrigation system. They have been using data that incorporates pump performance which has been evaluated several times in the last eight years by both the CVWD and Southern California Edison. They have worked with the water district on current spacing of sprinkler heads as well as precipitation uniformity rate evaluations of our current system. The results were that both were performing marginally. They have enlisted several irrigation designers and hired one to design a system for us two years ago. The update of the irrigation system has been talked about for the last 15 years. It is a line item on the reserve fund schedule and is not something that has

just arisen as an issue. The team has drawn information from many different sources and from people in the industry all in an effort to develop the best plan of action for Desert Princess. In converting over the community water around the houses and condos from city water (potable) to well water (non-potable), we have moved from TWO main lines both 4”-6” to ONE when we cut out the city water. Because we can only process so much water out of a 4”-6” pipe at any one time the length of time that it takes to irrigate has expanded to almost 18 hours, thus we are watering in non-peak times as well as peak times. Therefore, the cost of electricity is increasing with the need to operate at peak times. We found we were watering too many systems (areas) at a time and the heads were not operating at full capacity. In addition, we now have to filter the water out of the ponds for the residential irrigation heads because of algae within our system. The algae is not being killed but filtered and clogs the filters every few days. This causes the irrigation heads to not operate efficiently. We have temporarily put in filters but we need a long range efficient plan to kill the algae. These problems combined with the fact that our main line is only 4”-6”, and it should be 8”-10” punctuate the need for new irrigation pump stations. Having an 8”10” line will cut our watering time down by one third. Our pump stations are operating somewhere around 55% to 60% efficiency and should be operating closer to 80%. Being unable to control each individual head, (we now have 7-8 clustered together) on one valve means that we are over watering in many areas. The fact that the irrigation heads are not properly spaced or leveled and the orifice size (hole size which the water emits through) has increased due to the grit and sand through the years makes this a totally inefficient system.
An additional benefit of a new system would be adding quick couplers so that we could hand water in emergencies. We would be looping the system so we could isolate small sections if they needed be to be worked on, if and when breaks do occur. As it is now, we have to shut down massive areas in order to repair a small area. The new systems have air relief valves to eliminate hammering which destroys the pipes. Over time, the hammering in the pipes leads to breakage such as we are currently experiencing. These features will greatly enable us to reach the mandates that the state has put in that all golf courses reduce water usage by a minimum of 20% by the year 2020 or sooner.

SPA March…..does this mean we are almost heading into spring already? March is always a very busy time over here at the Spa & Tennis Center. Charlie will have it packed with tennis tournaments and there will be a ton of people here throughout the month of March. It is always great to see so many people over here enjoying these tournaments…everyone should come and watch. The Spa will also get a last rush of homeowners squeezing in some of their last treatments before closing things down in their homes and heading back home; always a sad time for us! I have heard from some homeowners that they will soon be here full time in the next year or two, which we love to hear. I hope you all take advantage of our March Special before heading home. TENNIS & ATHLETICS We have officially hit HIGH season! Bring on the fifth largest tennis tournament in the world, the BNP Paribas at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. The tournament begins March 3rd and it brings tennis enthusiasts from all over the world. The tennis courts here at the Desert Princess will be packed for 12 straight days in the mornings with lots of clinics and active match play. In the afternoons from March 7th through March 14th, we will be hosting eight universities for duel match competitions from 11 am until dark. Make sure you stop by the Tennis Center to watch the following universities battle it out: Gonzaga, Penn, Bowling Green, Niagara, Fairly Dickenson, Rhode Island, UC Riverside and Portland will all be in attendance on your beautiful courts! DESERT PRINCESS CRAFTERS Crafters continue to meet on Wednesdays from noon until 4 pm in the Masters Lounge. We are looking forward to having you join us. Thank you to many of you who have donated items we can transport to our charities. We've made many trips with assorted items to the California Palms Seniors, Cathedral City Boys & Girls Club and Operation Safe House. If you have items you no longer use or need and would like to donate them, contact one of our members: Barbara Gibson - 327-1320, Rosie Mascolo - 288-2889, Sharon Hadler - 325-3263, or Irene Ripley 325-6839. New ideas are always accepted. Last year, we made about 30 quilts for our seniors. We are in the process of making some more. At Christmas we took Christmas gifts to 39 seniors. It is such a pleasant experience to be on that delivery team. Many of the seniors there do not have family and this may be their only Chistmas. They enjoy our deliveries too. Social Worker Craig Bruce at Cathedral Palms Senior Center is wonderful. He is very pleasant to work with and we think he is the best. He constantly checks on the seniors there.

FROM THE CHIEFS CORNER This safety article is dedicated to one of the best people in the world, my dad, Frank DiGiovanna! He loves to golf and was instrumental in helping me write this article. Golf really is a very safe sport and if you follow a few basic safety rules injuries can be reduced or eliminated. Swinging of metal clubs propel golf balls at high speeds. If you're in the way of either, you're in danger. Following a few basic guidelines can help ensure your safety, and that of those around you on the course. Keep Track of Those Around You When a golf club is in your hands and you are preparing to swing, it is your responsibility to make sure your playing partners are a safe distance away from you. Never swing a golf club when another golfer is close to you. Practice makes perfect but be a little extra cautious on practice swings, when it's easy for golfers to let their guard down. Don't hit your ball until you are confident that any golfers up ahead are out of your range. Be Heads Up Even when it's not your turn to hit, stay aware of your surroundings. Fore Pete’s Sake Cover Up When You Hear It! Yell "Fore" as loud as you can if suspect someone may be in danger. This is the universal word of warning in golf. If you hear it, cover up, (take) cover behind your golf bag, tree, cart, (or friend) and cover your head with your arms. Make yourself a smaller target and protect your head. Patience A virtue desired by many possessed by few! Yes, there are those occasions when a very slow group is ahead of yours, and frustration takes over. We’ve all seen it or know them. That “special” person who gets angry and tee’s up intentionally hitting into the slow-playing group ahead. If you're ever tempted to do this don't! It's very rare, but golfers have been killed after being struck by golf balls. Many have been injured. Just take a deep breath and enjoy the scenery.
Drive Safely Driving a golf cart isn't a difficult thing to do. Observe all safety rules. Don't hang your feet out of the cart while it's in motion; don't go off-roading over bumpy terrain; don't drive at full speed around curves or down steep hills. Don't let small children drive the cart. Don't drive the cart if you've had a few too many beers. And watch out for other golf carts at points where paths cross. Sunscreen! Protect your skin by always using a strong sunscreen. Wear a wide-brimmed cap to keep the sun off your face. Add Fluids ... (No, not Beer!) the Right Kind of Fluids. If you're playing golf under the sun on a hot day, you'll be sweating off a lot of body fluids. Stay hydrated! Drink plenty of water. Lightning At the very first sign of lightning, head for the clubhouse. If caught out in the open and unable to find shelter, get away from your clubs, your golf cart, water and trees, and remove metal spikes if wearing them. If in a group, group members should remain at least 15 feet apart. If you feel a tingling sensation or the hair on your arms stands up, crouch in a baseball catcher's position, balancing on the balls of your feet. Fold your arms in front of your knees, keep your feet together and your head forward. Love you, Dad! Be Safe and Have Fun! ALC BREEZE Since water and water conservation has been such a hot topic in the news recently, there are a few “water thoughts” that should be shared with our community. LEAVING FOR THE SUMMER? TURN OFF YOUR WATER! The end of the season is on the horizon and a lot of our homeowners will head for cooler climates as summer approaches. If you’re closing up your house, remember to turn off your water at the main water valve— usually located in your front courtyard if you’re in a villa or in the front condo entry. Our HOA Rules and Regulations require that all homeowners who will be leaving their condos or villas unoccupied for a period of seven consecutive days or longer must shut off the water supply to their unit. If your water is left on and a water leak were to occur while you were gone, you’d be responsible for all costs and expenses not covered by insurance for the repair and/or replacement of common area or common facilities and any damaged areas of the residence structure that the Association is obligated to repair and maintain, not to mention whatever damage may occur inside your home and to your private property and furnishings. So close that water valve and stay high and dry here in the desert this summer. Your peace of mind is well worth the extra effort. DOES YOUR VILLA POOL HAVE A SEPARATE FILL LINE? Many villas have private pools of varying vintage. It’s been recently discovered that a number of these pools were installed without separate water fill lines, which has created problems because once the water to the home has been turned off at the main water valve, the water to the pool auto fill valve is also truncated. Water levels in pools and spas can drop drastically and quickly during the dog days of summer and pool equipment can be damaged. The ALC/HOA is very aware of this issue and now require that all new pool installations include a dedicated water fill line. Ask

your pool maintenance company to check your water lines to make sure that your pool is being filled with a dedicated water feed. If you find that you only have one water line for the house and the pool, you should have that rectified immediately. INSTALLING A WATER PURIFICATION/ FILTRATION SYSTEM? It’s no secret that the Coachella Valley has very hard water that’s fraught with minerals that can cause corrosive build-up inside of pipes and leave deposits indoors and out on everything from windows, pool tiles, sink faucets, and shower doors to silverware and glassware. Many homeowners have found that a water filtration/purification treatment system makes all the difference in the water that comes into the house. Drinking water tastes better, the laundry is cleaner, hard water marks on glass are almost nonexistent, and your shampoo bubbles much better! There are many options when it comes to these systems, depending on your budget, requirements and preference to either own the equipment or lease it. LifeSource Water has an excellent system that you own; Rayne of Palm Springs and Culligan Water will install equipment and change the filtration tank on a monthly contract and can accommodate drinking water systems, water filters, softeners, and purifiers. Of course, you can also purchase an in-house system as well and should consider investigating all options before making a decision. If and when you decide on a system that requires the filtration tank be installed on the exterior of your home, please be sure to get the specs on where and how the installation will be done and submit a Home Improvement Application to the ALC/HOA. SAFE & SOUND This has been a positive year thus far for the Desert Princess Patrol Services Department. Our traffic at the Vista Chino Gate reflects higher than anticipated volume, but has been more manageable than in years past. I believe this is largely due to the level of cooperation we’ve received from Residents, Guests and Property Managers. Residents, thank you for taking the time to call in your guests prior to their arrival. Thanks also to all our Guests and Vacationers who have followed our directions and present their passes each time they re-enter the community. It has made a huge difference in our ability to clear the traffic quickly and efficiently. This season has also reflected very low criminal activity. Now, of course, we are still not incident free; but the level of activity experienced this season has greatly diminished from past years. I’ve mentioned before that there are adjustments and changes made in our patrols to maximize the coverage of our problem areas...it appears that our efforts, combined with increase coordination with CCPD, has generated positive results. We’re hopeful that this will progress through the end of the season and into the summer months. Just a couple of notes of which to be aware: the Gate Attendants will no longer be accepting guest information from residents driving through. Stopping at the Gate to advise of a guest arriving creates a lot of unnecessary congestion. It is imperative that we continue our success controlling the traffic at the gates, both entry and exit. Please continue to call-in your guests at (760) 322-0441. Our Dispatcher will be able to take your guest information over the phone 24 hrs a day, seven days a week. Or you can update your guest list via www.desertprincesslive.com. Next, with the community at full occupancy, finding available parking becomes a large concern. That being said, the lack of parking near your unit does not justify parking on landscape, in fire lanes or in front of condo garages. Patrol has been monitoring this situation very closely and will issue warning notices to any vehicles in violation of the parking policies. Please make sure you and any guests that visit park only in the designated parking areas or on the street where it is not marked as a fire lane.

Also, the Board of Directors has recently re-instituted the Golf Cart Registration Policy, which levies a substantial fine. Patrol has already observed some carts on property that are not currently registered with the HOA and warning notices have been issued. So, if you haven’t done so already, please visit the HOA to register you golf cart.

PATROL SERVICES COMMITTEE REPORT During the month of January, we had two reports of theft from vehicles. The crimes occurred on the same night around the same time and in the same area of the resort. Both vehicles were left unlocked and small items were taken. The vehicles were parked in the parking areas for condos on East Portales. I'm going to take a wild guess that the owners of these vehicles don't read The Royal Page. Other responses by our Patrol Services officers were for medical emergencies and four traffic accidents. Otherwise, it was a fairly quiet month. Committee member Doug Ashbridge wrote the following information and advice pertaining to vehicle security: “During this busy time of year at Desert Princess, we have a higher number of vehicles parked on our property, creating an inviting target for would be-thieves. While our incidents of vehicle break-ins and thefts remain very low, now is a good time to be reminded of a few simple preventive steps you can take to reduce the likelihood of becoming a theft victim.
1. Park in your assigned garage. The most secure space for your vehicle is in your locked garage.
2. Remove all valuables from your vehicle when possible or secure them in the locked trunk.
3. Parking change (even very small amounts) is a significant target of thieves.
4. Secure doors and windows, even if only leaving your vehicle parked for a few minutes.
5. Try to park near a light source at night in an area where your vehicle is likely to be seen from your residence or that of a neighbor.
6. As always, if you see something or someone suspicious, immediately report it to our Patrol Services team and/or the Cathedral City Police. Note a description of the person(s) and a direction of travel, if possible.
Your attention to these simple details are the best defense against vehicle crime in our community. Thanks for your attention and enjoy the season!� In closing, and on a personal note, this will be my last article for The Royal Page. I have decided to retire from the Security/Patrol Services Committee. In 1997, I was asked by the HOA manager to become a member of a new committee called the Security Committee. Our charge was to work with our Security Department and make recommendations to the Board of Directors on safety and security issues. During the second meeting, I was elected chairman and have held that position for 17 years. I did try to give it away numerous times. For some reason, I could never get a second to my motion. The new chairman for this committee will be announced in the April edition of the Royal Page after Board approval.
