WORSHIP NOTES
We are very pleased that you have joined us for worship today! We pray that this time will be a blessing for you as God comes to you with his Word and promises, and as you offer him your thanks and praise.
The order of worship we will follow is printed in this worship folder for you to follow along and participate. You’ll notice that the service is a dialogue between God and us, his people. The pastor speaks to God along with the congregation and also speaks the Word of God to the people. LARGE PRINT worship folders are available at the entrances for those who desire them.
Today we are using elements from the Christian Worship (2021) hymnal. You will find these blue worship books in the hymnal racks in each pew. You will be asked to open the hymnal to participate in parts of the service today. A vocalist will aid in our singing and will be recorded for our audio disks and video live-streaming.
There is no cost to park in our parking lot during Sunday morning worship services. If you receive a citation by mistake, please let our office staff know so it can be cleared.
OUR WORSHIP SERIES OUR GREATEST NEEDS
What do you really need right now? To answer that question, one must first define what a “need” is. We understand that a “need” is greater than a “want.” If you lack something you want, life goes on just fine. If you lack something you need, that presents a problem. Thus, to correctly answer that question, “What do you really need right now,” ultimately one must understand their greatest problems.
Mankind’s greatest problems are universal. We all live under the curse of sin. That sin makes us utterly helpless in our natural state. Natural man is confused, unable to make sense of life. Left in sin, man is doomed to death, and not just physical death. After one’s heart stops comes another type of death that is infinitely worse, an eternal nightmare.
Lent is the season of the Church Year where we wrestle with our greatest needs. Lent also demonstrates that in Christ, all our greatest needs are met. Here is what the Spirit makes clear this season. If you lack Christ, you have nothing. If you have Christ, you have everything you truly need.
OUR THEME FOR TODAY LIFE FOR THE DEAD
The author and poet George Eliot once wrote, “Our dead are never dead to us, until we have forgotten them.” The Roman philosopher Cicero said much the same. He wrote, “The life of the dead is placed in the memory of the living.” What second rate comfort! But that is the best the unbelieving world can offer the sappy sentiment that our dead loved ones somehow “live on” in our memories. It is a sad way to attempt to cope as you walk through the cemetery.
Jesus promises a better solution to death. He promises life. One day Jesus will give your faithful dead back to you to love and to laugh and to hug and to dance. Body and soul, living and walking in the new heaven and the new earth. How do we know Jesus can and will keep that promise? Because the Son of God descended into the darkness of death himself and emerged on Easter Sunday as the first fruit of the resurrection of all God's people. In the creed we confess, “I believe in the resurrection of the body.” Yet again, Jesus satisfies our greatest needs.

CONFESSION OF SINS
If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.
If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.
Let us confess our sins to the Lord.
Holy God, gracious Father, I am sinful by nature and have sinned against you in my thoughts, words, and actions.
I have not loved you with my whole heart; I have not loved others as I should.
I deserve your punishment both now and forever. But Jesus, my Savior, paid for my sins with his innocent suffering and death.
Trusting in him, I pray: God, have mercy on me, a sinner.
Silence for meditation and reflection
Our gracious Father in heaven has been merciful to us. He sent his only Son, Jesus Christ, who gave his life as the atoning sacrifice for the sins of the whole world. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the (+) Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
During this Lenten season, we are using The Service Setting One from the hymnal (p. 154 and following) as our order of worship.
“Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.” James 5:16
Christ gave the authority to forgive the sins of penitent sinners to his church: “Whenever you forgive people’s sins, they are forgiven.”

1 John 1:8-9Kyrie is the Greek word for Lord. The expression “Lord, have mercy” is one of the oldest worship responses in the Christian Church. The minister will sing the italicized words. The congregation responds by singing “Lord, have mercy” and the final “Amen.”

Eternal God and Father, help us to remember Jesus, who obeyed your will and bore the cross for our salvation, that through his anguish, pain, and death we may receive the forgiveness of sins, victory over the grave, and finally inherit eternal life; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
Amen.
The Gloria (Glory to God in the Highest), which we often sing following the Kyrie, is traditionally omitted during the season of Lent, as our rejoicing is more muted and quiet during this season. We look forward with joyful anticipation to Easter Day when our most jubilant songs of praise will return.

2 Kings 4:17-37
17 But the woman conceived, and she gave birth to a son at that same time of year, just as Elisha said to her.
18 The boy grew up, and one day he went out to his father, who was with the reapers. 19 Then he said to his father, “My head! My head!”
His father said to his servant, “Carry him to his mother.” 20 So he picked him up and carried him to his mother, and the boy sat on her lap until noon. Then he died.
21 Then she went up and laid him on the bed of the man of God. She shut the door behind her and went out. 22 Then she called to her husband and said, “Send one of the servants to me with one of the donkeys, so that I can run to the man of God and come back.”
23 He said, “Why are you going to him today? It’s not the new moon, and it’s not the Sabbath.”
But she said, “It’s all right.”
24 Then she saddled the donkey and said to her servant, “Lead the way. Don’t slow down for me unless I tell you.”
25 So she went to the man of God at Mount Carmel.
God wants us to know that whoever believes in him will live, even though he dies. He enables the prophet Elisha to prove that to a grieving mother.

This setting of Psalm 130 was not included in the blue hymnal. Rather, it was included in the Christian Worship Psalter which was released in connection with the hymnal in 2021.
When the man of God saw her from a distance, he said to his servant Gehazi, “Look! That’s the woman from Shunem! 26 Now run to meet her and say, ‘Are you all right? Is your husband all right? Is your son all right?’”
She answered, “We’re all right.”
27 Then she came to the man of God at the mountain, and she grasped his feet. Gehazi stepped forward to push her away, but the man of God said, “Leave her alone, for her soul is in distress, but the L has hidden it from me. He has not told me.”
28 Then she said, “Did I ask my lord for a son? Didn’t I say, ‘Don’t give me false hope’?”
29 Then Elisha said to Gehazi, “Hike up your garments for travel, and take my staff in your hand and go! If you meet someone, do not greet him, and if someone greets you, do not answer. Put my staff on the boy’s face.”
30 But the boy’s mother said, “As surely as the L lives and your soul lives, I will not leave you.” So he got up and followed her. 31 Gehazi went ahead of them and put the staff on the boy’s face. But there was no sound, and there was no response. So he went back to Elisha and told him, “The boy did not wake up.”
32 When Elisha came to the house, there the boy was dead, lying on his bed. 33 So he went in and he shut the door behind the two of them. Then he prayed to the L . 34 He got up and lay down on top of the boy. He put his mouth to the boy’s mouth, his eyes to the boy’s eyes, his palms to the boy’s palms. Then he bent down over him, and the boy’s flesh became warm. 35 He went back into the house and paced back and forth. Then he went up and bent down over him, and the boy sneezed seven times. Then the boy opened his eyes.
36 Then Elisha called Gehazi and said, “Call the woman of Shunem!” So he called her, and she came in. He said, “Pick up your son.” 37 So she came in and fell at Elisha’s feet and bowed down to the ground. Then she picked up her son and went out.

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

The Apostles’ Creed developed in the Early Christian Church as a personal confession of faith. It is so named because it confesses the faith taught by the Apostles of Jesus.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH
Gracious Lord, according to your will and promise, you sent your Son into our world to atone for sin and restore eternal life. You planned his path to the cross, and he followed it perfectly. Your Spirit led him to endure the temptations of Satan, but he triumphed. Your own people rejected his message, but he persevered. He confronted the blindness of unbelief, the confusion of doubt, and the hurt of death but was not deterred as he proclaimed your kingdom to the least, the last, and the lost.
Guide us to follow Christ by faith as we walk the road of temptation and trial. Spare us from falling into Satan’s traps, and steel our resolve as his partners confront us. Teach us to use your Word as a weapon to fight against all devilish lies and deceptions. When we fall and we surely will lift us up again with your forgiveness and grace.
As we hear and contemplate the holy record of our Savior’s passion and death, use the sharp message of the law to empty us of pride and self-reliance. Humble us as we view the Savior in his humility, remembering and believing that he endured the cross so we might be freed from its horror. In his suffering show us our healing, in his grief show us our joy, and in his death show us our life.
Protect all who are bearing the cross of persecution and disdain. Supply your power to those fighting temptations and addictions. Watch over all who are sick and suffering in body, mind, and heart. We pray especially for children who are abused, forsaken, or ignored. Comfort all your troubled people with the sweet peace that only Jesus can bring.
Give wisdom and resolve to the leaders of our government that their rule may bring prosperity to our land and peace to our people. Supply insights to those who seek cures and invent devices to make our lives on earth better and safer. Inspire creative minds to touch our hearts in ways that reflect your creating love. You desire that we bask in the glory of your redemption; according to your will, may we also enjoy the wonders of your creation.
Hear our prayers, Lord, for the sake of Jesus, whose journey to the cross we remember during the days of Lent. Comfort and strengthen us by his life and death on our behalf, and thrill us as we look forward to celebrating his victory on Easter. Amen.

Sunday Morning Bible Study
Grow In Grace is the name of our Bible Information Class, an overview of what the Bible teaches that we use as a course for adults who may be interested in membership at Grace. The young people in our Confirmation Classes learn the same material in a slightly different way. Is it time for a review? Do you have questions that you have been waiting to ask? Join us on Sunday mornings at 9:00 AM in the Fellowship Hall as we consider portions of our Grow In Grace Class and look at why we teach what we do. The current section of our class focuses on the work of the Holy Spirit.

In these weeks leading up to Easter, Grace is reaching out to our neighbors through a Facebook ad campaign. If you are a Facebook user, please consider sharing Easter information from the Grace Facebook page. Our printed Easter invitations also direct people to our Easter webpage, where they can learn more about why Easter matters.
Monday Evening Service
An evening worship service is held at Grace-Sahuarita on Monday evenings at 6:00 PM. This service provides another alternative for those who may not be able to worship on Sunday. Members who regularly worship at any Grace sites are welcome to make use of this weeknight service. Our last Monday service will be April 3. Monday evening services will resume again next January.
Midweek Lenten Services: Wednesday
Wednesday midweek Lenten services are being held at Grace-Benson, Grace-Sahuarita, and Grace -Tucson. You are also invited to join us for a Lenten Supper here at Grace-Tucson at 6:00 PM.
The theme of our midweek services is “His Final Steps.” This series ponders the significance of the people and places on Jesus’ final steps to the cross and, three days later, his first steps from the tomb. Please see the schedule below for this Wednesday, March 29.

Outdoor Workday: Saturday
There will be a workday here at Grace-Tucson THIS Saturday, April 1, beginning at 8:00 AM to clean up the church grounds and parking lot. We will be pruning back shrubs and ground cover plants. All children 3 years old through grade 5 are invited to attend Easter for Kids in the Grace-Tucson Fellowship Hall THIS Saturday, April 1, from 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM. We will make crafts, sing songs, and learn the Easter account. Older siblings are welcome to participate and volunteer. Families are invited to stay after for an Easter egg hunt. Grace will once again have a booth at Fiesta Sahuarita! This free event takes place from 2:00 to 8:00 PM on Saturday, April 15, at Anamax Recreation Center (17501 Camino De Las Quintas). Come out and enjoy vendors, food trucks, live music, a kids water zone, and a drone show after dark! We are looking for volunteers to help with our booth. Youth Night Tucson: April 15
Are you in high school? Then join your Christian peers from across Tucson for our next Youth Night! We will play fun games, eat comfort food, praise our Lord, and discuss Dealing With Anxiety. CLC Charity Golf Tournament April 24
Do you enjoy golf? Join us on Monday, April 24, for the 4th annual CLC Charity Golf Tournament! Beginning at 1:00 PM, golfers will participate in a 4-person scramble golf tournament at Desert Hills Private Golf Club in Green Valley. Our goal for this big event is to raise funds for the It Takes the Community Scholarship Fund to benefit our community families in need of child care. ALA Golf Classic: April 29
You’re invited to participate in the ALA Golf Classic on Saturday, April 29, at the beautiful Legacy Golf Club. This is a 4-person scramble tournament beginning with a shotgun start at 7:30 AM. 2023 will be our 29th ALA Golf Classic. God continues blessing the event as we raise the bar for fun and fundraising! We raised over $20,000 each of the last 2 years in support of our ALA athletic department. We are grateful for our golfers, sponsors, and volunteers who make this an amazing event. Helping Hands
Sometimes you could just use a helping hand! Do you have a talent or service that you could offer to our fellow Grace members who could use some help (at a minimal cost or free)? Just a few ideas: outdoor work, computer work, sewing/mending, handyman, cooking, organizing, transportation to appointments, etc. We’re sure there are many more! If you would like to help, please fill out a Helping Hands card found on the bulletin board outside of the Library in the Fellowship Hall. The offers we have already received are posted on the bulletin board as well.
