How do you use fashion to express yourself?

Feminism in fashion

Vogue 1971 May featured Germaine Greer’s paisley coat. The feminist was a leading yet divisive figure due to her contentious and controversial views. She sewed the counter-culture garment herself. The making, wearing and display of Greer's coat challenges the history of feminism. The article puts the coat in dialogue with Greer's ideas on fashion and women ’ s liberation, examining the intersection of fashion and feminist movements.

1970's

This was an empowering time for woman in politics. This was represented through fashion and magazines. Margaret Thatcher served as prime minister for the full decade. She was a contentious and contradictory individual, however her fashion was influential. Vivienne Westwood is seen dressing as Margret Thatcher on the 1989 cover of Tatler.

Cindy Crawford emulated Audrey Hepburn for her first Vogue cover. Her distinctive mole was edited out, reflecting the beauty standards from this era.

Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Tatjana Patitz, Christy Turlington, and Linda Evangelista were on the cover of Vogue, signalling the beginning of the supermodel period. When shooting this, photographer Peter Lindbergh used his distinctive "unvarnished" style, focusing on the individual’s natural beauty and charm. Multiple models were used as beauty was valued more and could no longer be defined to a single person.

In March 1993, Kate Moss appeared on her first front cover of Vogue. The photographer, Corrine Day, had a distinct, unadorned "antifashion" aesthetic and the photoshoot was inspired by the rebellious grunge movement which influenced 90's youth culture.

Gisele Bundchen and Robbie Williams as the first naked man to be featured in a Vogue issue. The pin up issue delves into the rock star's life, travels and rising fame. In relation to desire and the male and female gaze, Gisele can be viewed as embracing her sexuality and advocating a healthy lifestyle, alternatively, this may be interpreted as raising beauty standards. Contemporary covers depict celebrities such as Timothée Chalamet and Harry Styles portrayed in a similar way, but show how society has developed as themes of ge n are present

What trends do you think originated from the noughties?

Celebrity culture dominated the fashion industry in the noughties. Celebrities developed into style icons and the clothes they wore set trends.
