Working Parents From a teenage perspective, Marilyn Velasquez.
Most parents when at home, your minds are still “at work”. It is important for the parent to know your children (child) might not understand it. This will add stress in the household and will disconnect them from you. As a result, your relationship and child’s emotions will be wounded. From a teenager’s perspective, here are a few notes to help maintain a healthy bond with your teen. 1. Eye Contact: Maintaining eye contact is critical. This simple gesture demonstrates acknowledgement, trust and security for your teen. It delivers confidence and encouragement. 2. Teens Love Storytime: As teenagers, we often hear the phrase “back in my day”. Although this phrase is used in a guiding manner, it feels more like a criticized comparison of today’s youth. A great way to get a teenager’s attention is to talk about the teen itself! Bring back the teenager’s childhood moments. This allows them to relive good times, reminiscing all the times you were by their side. This will also give them the opportunity to share anything that is bothering them in the present time. 3. Affection: Busy parents and independent adolescents frequently loose affection and instead often bump heads. To make the environment lighter, a good bye or a hug after your arrival from work can make a wonderful difference. A gentle pad on their shoulder or a smile will express you are happy to see them.

4. Understanding: It is not all about you parents. As teens, we also have all the emotions you feel; loneness, tired, nervous, frustrated, scared, etc. Most of the times we don’t know how to express it effectively. Don’t’ attack us, instead teach-show us how to express ourselves. Although generations differ, go back and think about your youth and your relationships. This will allow you to understand your teen. Parents it is ok to share your failures or struggles; your teen will learn from them and it gives them an opportunity to understand you. 5. Relaxation: Watching a movie or TV show together is a simple way to share a moment. If you allow them to select the movie it gives them a sense of importance and ultimately they will pick something that will please the parent. This gives you an opportunity to laugh or have a thrill with your teen with very little effort. Even better, critiquing the movie or TV show opens up an even bigger conversation. 6. Finally, don’t forget to always be a parent before taking the role of a friend. There are only 24 hours in a day but, it’s not about how much time you have left, It’s what you do with that time that matters. 20 mins dedicated effectively to your teen will make a difference.

Afecto: Con padres ocupados y adolescentes independientes el afecto desaparece y con frecuencia se presentan confrontaciones. Basta con un buen adiós al despedirse y un abrazo al regresar del trabajo para aligerrar el ambiente. Una ligera palmada en el hombro o una sonrisa expresará que está feliz de verlos.
4. Comprensión: No es sobre los adultos, los adolescentes tienen las mismas emociones; soledad, cansancio, frustración, miedo, enojos, etc. La mayoría de las veces no sabemos cómo expresarlas de manera eficaz. No nos ataquen, mejor tomen el tiempo para ayudar a expresarnos efectivamente. A pesar de la diferencia de generaciones, recuerden su juventud, sus inquietudes, y sus relaciones. Esto les permitirá entendernos. Está bien que los padres compartan sus fallas y luchas vividas durante su juventud. Su adolecente aprenderá de ellas y les dará la oportunidad de conocerlos más afondo. 5. Relajación: Ver una película o programa de televisión juntos es una forma sencilla de compartir un momento con su adolecente. Permita que ellos seleccionen la película, eso les dará un sentido de importancia, eventualmente elegirán algo que guste a los padres. Esta es una excelente oportunidad para reír y pasar un tiempo agradable, con un mínimo esfuerzo. Aún mejor, la crítica de la película o programa de televisión da lugar a una conversación aún más amplia. 6. No olviden, es muy importante que primero sean padres antes que ser un buen amigo(a). Sólo hay 24 horas en un día, pero, no se trata de cuánto tiempo les sobra, es lo que haces con ese momento lo que importa. 20 minutos dedicados a su adolecente hará una gran diferencia en sus vidas.
