U.S. Army

Army Develops Lightweight Ballistic Protection for Aircraft October 2, 2013

REDSTONE ARSENAL – Army tactics and training are constantly changing to meet the threat on the battlefield, and one such example is the attack helicopter. Originally the AH-1 Cobras were designed to arrive on station quickly, eliminate the threat, and move on to the next target. But in today's battlefield, attack helicopters like the AH-64 Apaches are providing air support to ground convoys, and often hovering over convoys to eliminate any sign of threats. These combat operations result in increased exposure to enemy ground fire and increased need for ballistic protection systems, and the Army Aviation and Missile Research, Development and Engineering Center's Prototype Integration Facility, or PIF, has developed that expertise. Ballistic Protection Systems, or BPS, typically consist of materials and techniques used to shelter personnel and materiel against projectiles. PIF Program Management Supervisor Jeff Carr said thick, heavy, dense material has historically been used for armor, so a major challenge for aviation is to provide ballistic protection in the lightest, most compact means possible. The PIF has a history of installing traditional armor on ground vehicles including the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System, or HIMARS. Although armor steel is a very effective BPS, it is extremely heavy. The cab armor on the HIMARS weighs approximately 2,500 pounds. Carr said changes in how the Army fights have challenged the Army to effectively employ lighter-weight armor systems in aircraft while maintaining or increasing the ability to withstand advanced ground fire. Advances in light-weight composites have allowed the Army to begin the integration of new lighter weight Ballistic Protection Systems.

KC-46 Progress Hinges On Requirements, Funding Stability September 19, 2013

WASHINGTON (AFNS) -- On September 17, an Air Force official announced that production has started on KC-46 flight test aircraft. The highpriority program is charged with delivering 18 combat-ready KC46 aircraft by 2017, and will eventually replace about a third of the KC-135 Stratotanker fleet. In a presentation at the Air Force Association's 2013 Air & Space Conference & Technology Exposition, Maj Gen John Thompson, Air Force Program Executive Officer for Tankers, outlined continued progress in the aerial refueling aircraft's design and acquisition timeline. "The tanker crews -- pilots, boom operators, maintainers -- are conducting about 150 sorties and refueling about 450 aircraft a day, keeping the 'global' in global reach, global vigilance and global power," Maj Gen Thompson said. "The KC-135s are nearly 51 years old. It is a fantastic weapon system, but our operators and maintainers need something new and better." In August, Air Force officials closed the KC-46 weapon system's critical design review, taking ownership of the design and moving forward in the acquisition timeline. The closure, Maj Gen Thompson said, represented the culmination of 10 months of component and subsystem design examinations which allowed the program to progress into its manufacturing and test phases. The review processes benefited from commercial and Department of Defense best practices, leading to overall improvements and projected cost-savings, Maj Gen Thompson said. Concurrent with preparations for the flight test phase of the program, officials are working to ensure technical performance is verified.

U.S. Navy Expands Surveillance Mission for Northrop Grumman-Built Maritime Unmanned Aircraft September 18, 2013

SAN DIEGO – The U.S. Navy will increase by 50 percent the monthly surveillance flights of a Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC)-built maritime unmanned demonstrator under a contract awarded Sept. 6. The contract will allow Navy commanders to keep closer tabs on activities in the ocean and coastal regions of the Middle East. Under terms of the $9.98 million award, the company will provide maintenance, operations and other support services to enable the Broad Area Maritime Surveillance Demonstration (BAMSD) aircraft to fly 15 missions per month, up from nine missions per month in previous years. "The Navy planned a six-month demonstration of the BAMS-D aircraft in 2009 to test the maritime surveillance capabilities of the system," said Mike Mackey, Northrop Grumman program director for the Triton unmanned aircraft program that includes the BAMS-D. "That demonstration was so successful that the service has used them for more than four years now." Based on the Global Hawk unmanned air system designed for land surveillance, the BAMS-D systems were modified to work in a maritime environment. In April, the aircraft surpassed 10,000 flight hours. The BAMS-D aircraft regularly fly missions more than 24 hours long. Flying at high altitude, they can monitor and gather imagery from vast areas of ocean and coastal regions.

Raytheon began modification of existing HARMs early this year. Delivery of HCSM units is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2013. Raytheon has teamed with Honeywell, Rockwell Collins and others for the HCSM program. The contract was awarded in Raytheon's second quarter of 2013. About HARM and HCSM The AGM-88 High-Speed Anti-Radiation Missile is a key battlespace element to suppress or destroy surface-to-air missile radars, early warning radars and radar-directed air defense artillery systems. HARMs have made hostile airspaces worldwide safer for U.S. and allied warfighters. The missile resides in the inventories of eight countries. More than 4,000 HARMs have been employed in combat.

General Dynamics Awarded $118 Million for Stryker Double-V Hull Vehicles September 10, 2013

STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. – General Dynamics Land Systems has been awarded a $118 million contract by the U.S. Army TACOM Life Cycle Management Command to convert 66 flat-bottom Stryker infantry combat vehicles to a newer, more survivable double-V hull (DVH) design. Deliveries of the vehicles will begin in July 2014 and be completed by February 2015. General Dynamics Land Systems is a business unit of General Dynamics (NYSE: GD). The Army partnered with General Dynamics in 2012 and launched a Stryker DVH-exchange pilot program to validate that components from traditional Stryker flat-bottom variants can be quickly refurbished and installed on a new, more survivable double-V hull variant, at less cost than producing a new vehicle. General Dynamics and the Anniston Army Depot in Anniston, Ala., successfully completed the DVH pilot program in April 2013 and delivered 52 Stryker vehicles on time and under budget. The first brigade of Strykers equipped with double-V hulls was fielded in 2011 to provide Stryker-borne soldiers increased protection from the effects of roadside mines and improvised explosive devices. With MRAP-like or better survivability, the DVH configuration also includes a more rugged suspension system that has greatly improved mobility and reduced operating costs. Two brigades of double-V hull Stryker vehicles were produced between July 2010 and July 2013. The final assembly work will be performed at the Anniston Army Depot and will help to sustain the jobs of 80 employees who support the program. The contract will also preserve several jobs at General Dynamics' plant in Scranton, Penn.
