Transform your mind, change the world.
UFV VIEWBOOK 2024/25
UFV is Íyáqáwtxw, your house of transformation.
It’s your place to grow and evolve, ignite your passion, and cultivate knowledge. A place where learners, leaders, and seekers come to find a world-class education in a vibrant and scenic setting.
We’re here to help you gather what you need.
To go forward.
To change your world for the better.
In the Halq’eméylem language of the Stó:lō people, “Íyáqáwtxw” means “house of transformation.”
Featured on UFV’s institutional coat of arms, this motto reflects the university’s status as a place of change — of intellectual and personal transformation.
As UFV’s Chancellor Emeritus Gwen Point said when unveiling the coat of arms: “UFV is a place of transformation — in both knowledge and character — and this new symbol reflects the inclusion of Indigenous values and concepts, while emphasizing a new path forward together with the UFV community.”
The University of the Fraser Valley and the City of Mission have teamed up to create a new Centre of Excellence for Children, Youth, and Families on the UFV Mission campus at Heritage Park Centre. This innovative centre will offer a mix of academic programming, research, and outreach programs focused on children, youth, and families. The centre will also anchor UFV’s Teacher Education Department and offer additional academic programming in Early Childhood Education, the School and Community Support Worker program, and more.
The University of the Fraser Valley is located on the land of the Stó:lō peoples. The Stó:lō have an intrinsic relationship with what they call S’ólh Téméxw (Our Sacred Land). We express our gratitude and respect for the honour of living and working on this land.
You will find 15,000 students and all five of our locations in the Fraser Valley. The largest campus is in Abbotsford. It features a central library, bookstore, sports centre, student housing building, and a 50,000 sq. ft. student centre.
Our Chilliwack campus is home to agriculture, trades, and health sciences, in addition to other academic programs. It sits on 85 acres of land, with a sustainable LEED Gold-certified facility hosting a fully equipped dental clinic, library, cafeteria, bookstore, nursing stations, labs, classrooms, and more.
Well-connected locations in Mission, Clearbrook, and Hope offer academic programs, access to student services, and continuing education.
No matter where you’re from, the Fraser Valley feels like home.
If you want to live in the heart of the action, UFV’s on-campus student housing in Abbotsford, Lá:lem te Baker, offers over 200 furnished private bedrooms, along with communal kitchens and spaces to socialize.
Construction begins soon on a new six-storey student housing building, offering an additional 400 new beds in Abbotsford with single and tripleoccupancy units on every floor and mixed-use amenity spaces.
But wherever you stay, you’ll find all kinds of ways to immerse yourself in campus life. Learn more about student housing and off-campus accommodations at ufv.ca/housing.

S’olh Shxwèlí, “Our Place,” is UFV’s Indigenous Student Centre, providing a welcoming space for Indigenous students and easy-to-access resources. The centre’s goal is to serve as cultural and academic support, helping bridge the gap between the university and Indigenous peoples, and facilitate the Indigenization of our academy. Its cultural events are open to all students and include lunches, circle meetings, Elder visits and gatherings, workshops, and welcoming ceremonies, plus other activities on and off campus.
Along with supporting students at the Indigenous Student Centre, our Elders are involved in classes at the university, including History, Halq’eméylem language classes, and Indigenous Studies.

Women’s basketball peaked at No. 2 in the U SPORTS national rankings last season, while women’s volleyball climbed as high as No. 4 — plus team captain Gabrielle Attieh earned U SPORTS national women’s volleyball player of the year honours. In addition, several other UFV athletes were named to Canada West all-conference teams.
You don’t need to join a team to stay active at UFV. Our Department of Athletics and Campus Recreation hosts intramural volleyball, basketball, spikeball, and futsal games. We even hold friendly Valley Cup competitions against local rivals.
The Summit fitness centre at our Abbotsford campus is a hub for all things active, offering yoga, Zumba, spin, and circuit classes. “Being involved in research has challenged me both academically and interpersonally while also opening doors to graduate school and beyond. Having the opportunity to work one–on–one with a professor bolstered my confidence and expanded my knowledge of the intricacies involved in such a crucial component of academia. Research has granted me a newfound passion for exploration, inquisition, and most importantly, the will to place myself in situations outside the conventional.”
In some programs, students have access to research opportunities not normally available at the undergraduate level. There are over 100 research positions available through the Research Assistant Work-Study Grant program, which provides students with 120 hours of professional employment experience during a semester.
Research experience during your undergrad can help prepare you for graduate studies later on. ufv.ca/research

Participate in a “Get to Know UFV”
At UFV, you’re free to create a schedule that fits your life. Most programs give you the option to study part-time or full-time. Depending on your area of study, you may be able to take classes in the evening or online. If you want to study in the summer, we offer a full semester and two condensed semesters. If you decide you want to switch programs after your first year, you can! You’re welcome to try classes across disciplines while you uncover your passion.
How long will your program take to complete? It varies: if you study fulltime, a bachelor’s degree usually takes four years, a diploma two, and a certificate one. But many courses taken as part of one- and two-year programs count toward a higher credential. So you can keep your options open by earning a one-year certificate or a two-year diploma on the way to a full degree.
It takes a full year to prepare for university. Add these important dates to your calendar so you don’t miss out.

Post-secondary education is a significant investment! We recommend that you build a financing plan for the short- and long-term.
Applying for financial aid and awards can help you save during your time at UFV. Every year, millions of dollars in federal and provincial loans, grants, bursaries, scholarships, and awards go to UFV students through UFV’s Financial Aid and Awards office. Find information about all of your funding options at ufv.ca/money
Student loans
You can apply for a student loan through the government or a financial institution. You need to start paying these back six months after you graduate. The amount of funding available to you depends on whether you study full-time or part-time and how much income you make.
Grants are government funds that you don’t have to pay back. These are sometimes based on financial need, but not always. If you are interested in the trades, there are options that can help you while you study for your Red Seal.
In addition to financial aid, you can apply for a bursary each semester. Bursaries do not need to be repaid if you qualify.
Students who self-identify as Indigenous with the Indigenous Student Centre could be eligible for band funding, grants, various scholarships, bursaries, and other financial options.
If you’re enrolling at UFV in the academic year immediately following your high school graduation, you may qualify for a UFV entrance scholarship. The application deadline is March 10. (September 1 for trades).
If you are a former B.C. youth in care aged 19–26, meet specific criteria, and are pursuing an undergraduate first credential at UFV, you may be eligible to have your tuition and fees waived.
Scholarships are awarded to recipients based on academic excellence, community and school involvement, volunteer experience, and leadership activities. There are millions of dollars available to students who qualify. All you need to do is apply.
Co-operative education (Co-op) combines academic studies with relevant work experience. Academic semesters alternate with work terms that are four, eight, or 12 months long, giving you up to two years of relevant work experience.
The Work-Study program allows you to build your skills while you study with 120 hours of professional employment experience over a single semester in which you are also enrolled in courses. UFV hires many Work-Study students, so you can stay on campus while you earn valuable experience in the workplace.

“If I met me in my first year, I wouldn’t even recognize me! I used to feel like I was at UFV for no reason, but then I found my real community and it was an instant click. UFV is unique in that students get to do student research assistantships and conduct academic research as an undergrad. It’s a small community but when you make good connections, they really stick.”
Alicia Dyck (global development studies student) knows that she has come a long way since her first semester at UFV. At first, she didn’t know what to study. Then she met a community of students and professors who transformed her view of the university experience and helped her make a global impact.
Sheetal Deo (BA) is now an established lawyer living in the Gold Coast area of Australia, having completed her juris doctor, master of laws, and graduate diploma of legal practice, all at Bond University in Queensland, Australia. Deo is a lawyer by qualification, but she is an advocate by choice.
“So much of my interest in identity politics grew out of experiences I had at UFV. Public conversations I am leading now in Australia are based on a foundation of conversations I had and initiatives I was involved in as a UFV student.”
“I look forward to making our members, our ancestors, and future generations proud by progressing Tzeachten through the community’s vision and continuing to build a healthy community by nurturing our culture and enhancing social services.”
“It

“My professor, Dr. Amanda McCormick, has been instrumental in helping me figure out what I want to do. I went from nothing, to being dead-set on a path, to falling off the wagon, and now, here I am on my way to working in academia.”
Kia Neilsen (BA, criminology) experienced first-hand the impact a university professor can have on a student’s academic journey, career direction, and personal development. Now, she’s well on her way to shaping the world as a criminology researcher.
Derek Epp (BSW), whose Xwélmexw name is Weli’leq, is the elected Chief of the Tzeachten First Nation, part of the Ch’iyàqtel Tribe. Admission to UFV generally requires BC high school graduation or equivalent. For some programs, students without high school graduation may be admitted as mature students.
Applicants must provide UFV with their high school transcript. BC students should submit authorization for the Ministry of Education to provide UFV with their high school records. Visit the BC Ministry of Education Student Transcripts Services website to submit authorization at studenttranscripts.gov.bc.ca .
Current high school students should provide authorization until September to allow UFV to collect your interim and final grades.
Most programs require that applicants meet additional entrance requirements beyond UFV’s general admission requirements. These may include academic requirements, such as specific course grades and grade point averages, and supplementary support documents such as references, a written statement, or submission of a portfolio. To learn more about program-specific requirements, turn to pages 32–36.
You are considered to have the equivalent of a BC high school diploma if you have graduated from high school in another
province. Students in Quebec must have also completed one full year of CEGEP. Out-of-province course equivalencies can be found on our website.
English is the language of instruction at UFV. The minimum level of English proficiency for most degree and diploma programs at UFV is a C+ in English Studies 12 or equivalent.
Students who complete International Baccalaureate (IB) and Advanced Placement (AP) courses may earn transfer credit depending on their grades. To transfer credits for your IB and AP courses, you must meet the minimum grade requirements and send your official transcripts from the International Baccalaureate Organization or The College Board to UFV Admissions. Transfer credit is granted for IB courses with a grade of 5 or higher and AP courses with a minimum grade of 4.
Students who have attended other postsecondary institutions may be eligible to receive transfer credit. When applying, ensure you indicate all institutions you have attended and submit official transcripts from each one. All final decisions on transferability and transfer credit are made after UFV receives and evaluates all official transcripts.
What you need to get in.
IF YOU DON’T MEET PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS, UFV CAN HELP.
UFV offers pathways for you to gain admission to your goal program where you can upgrade courses as necessary. In some cases, you may be able to take upgrading courses alongside firstyear courses.
A variety of assessment and testing options are also available. You may be able to complete an assessment to meet your program’s entrance requirements.
UFV is committed to providing a supportive and inclusive learning environment accessible to all, regardless of background, finances, or academic level.
