ALI MUHAMMAD StoryWood Wearables

A

li Muhammad is an award-winning entrepreneur, business owner and the founder of StoryWood Wearables, which features unique bowties and fashion accessories handcrafted from reclaimed and historic wood. With wood sourced from Whiskey Row, the legendary Secretariat and Man O’ War barns and the Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory (using reclaimed bats), his inventory is expanding and is now found in 14 stores and online at storywoodwearables.com. SHOPPING: My favorite place to shop is CRAFT(s) Gallery and Mercantile to see their collection of contemporary and traditional art. They have something for everyone, including paintings, ceramics, glass, fiber art, folk art and more. EXPERIENCE: Everyone who comes to Louisville should experience Main Street. Go to a AAA Louisville Bats baseball game or watch our Louisville City FC soccer team, who are USL champs two years in a row. Next, visit Whiskey Row on Main Street and all that it has to offer like Sidebar or Duluth Trading Company. Visitors should include a tour of the Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory and Art Eatables. Visitors also need to see the start of the Bourbon Trail at the Frazier History Museum. Last but not least, I hope they visit our shop, StoryWood Wearables, at 2418 West Main St.! FAVE THING ABOUT LOUISVILLE: Of course, it’s the people! Louisvillians are extremely creative, and Louisville is the best place to start a business. The city and community are groomed to love, accept and support new local businesses.

orn in Henderson, Ky., where his great-greatgrandfather Henry Kraver first opened Peerless Distilling Company, Carson spent his formative years in Louisville. Today, he has a hand in every aspect of operations at Peerless and pours his heart into every detail. He takes great pride in the culture of the distillery, which fosters a close-knit, mom-andpop feel. Perhaps most of all, Carson is passionate about collaborating with his father, who first proposed the idea of reviving the family business, and sharing the family’s legacy with his own kids. EAT & DRINK: Louisville is a world-class culinary destination featured on “Top Chef.” It was also named in the Top 10 Best Food Cities by National Geographic. There is something for everyone. Looking for steaks? Go to Jeff Ruby’s. Looking for seafood with a view? Go to River House. Want a cocktail, great dinner and to finish with some Peerless ice cream? Have dinner at Butchertown Grocery. EXPERIENCE: The Frazier History Museum is home to the start of the Bourbon Trail, which is the perfect introduction to the Bourbon District. On Museum Row/Whiskey Row with the Frazier Museum is Kentucky Peerless, Michter’s, Old Forester, Evan Williams and Angel’s Envy. ATTEND: The most obvious answer is go to the Kentucky Derby, which you should do at least

once, but I would definitely recommend Bourbon & Beyond. It’s a weekend-long music festival in September where different distilleries are present and seminars are held.

TEDDY ABRAMS Louisville Orchestra

T

eddy Abrams is the widely-acclaimed conductor who has served as the music director of the Louisville Orchestra since 2014. An advocate for the power of music in a community, Abrams has fostered collaborations with organizations in

Louisville and beyond and has instituted many educational and outreach programs to create a culture of the arts in our city. He has led orchestras and performed as both clarinet soloist and pianist all over the United States. He is featured in the web series Music Makes a City Now, conducted the Indianapolis Symphony in a PBS special and was assistant conductor to his long-time mentor Michael Tilson Thomas for the “YouTube Symphony” project. Abrams studied at the Curtis Institute of Music and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. EXPERIENCE: Everyone should experience the Humana Festival of New American Plays at Actors Theatre. Also, Louisville Orchestra’s Festival of American Music, where we experiment with the future of music! Outside of performing, distillery tours are always a great time. ATTEND: Forecastle is without a doubt the best music festival in the world and should not be missed. Also, GlitterTitz at Zanzabar on Saturday nights is the best dance party you’ll find anywhere. FAVE THING ABOUT LOUISVILLE: We don’t just call ourselves a “compassionate city.” We live it and believe in what compassion can do for our community. Also, this is a place where a great aspirational idea can become reality with energy and enthusiasm.
