that you need a smaller color space for output, converting an Adobe RGB (1998) file to sRGB before editing it is a good plan ; that way, you 'll see only colors that are reproducible.

If you 're using a dSLR camera, you can set your preferences to tell your camera which color space to use for capturing images. I recommend that you set this preference on Adobe RGB (1998) . This way, you can decide to work on photos In a smaller space or leave them in their larger nalive color space when you open them in Photoshop. Keep in mind, though, that it you 're shoaling RAW this setting doesn 't apply because you determine which color space to use when the file is opened.

Sometimes it's necessary to change a file's profile after you open it in Photoshop. For example, you have a photo that will be printed on your inkjet printer and IT will be uploaded on your Web site. Because you want to use Adobe RGB (1998) for the inkjet print and sRGB for the Web image, you need to open the file into Adobe RGB (1998) , prepare it for printing, and then save the file. Then convert the profile of the image to sRGB and prepare it for Web usage and save it using a different name. To convert a file 's profile after it's open in Photoshop, choose Editc:>Convert to Profile. When you do, the Convert to Profile dialog box shown in Figure 3-8 opens. Select the profile you want to convert to by using the drop-down list in the Destination Space section and click OK. The file is converted and tagged with the new profile so that it's permanently attached when the file is saved . This is also the method you use to convert files to your lab's color profile, if you received one from it.

After you get a handle on what's happening with profile mismatches and you get tired of being asked the same question every time you open a file, you can deselect the question check box in the Color Settings dialog box. I generally recommend against this, but you may have reasons to make this choice.
