INDUSTRY EVENTS LECTURE NBF NBF LECTURE: SHORT FILM ON THE INTERNET: RIGHTS & RISKS FRI 18/3 – 10:00-12:00 – FESTIVAL LOUNGE Nowadays the Internet is booming with film and video. At any moment and in any place you can view film and video on user-generated websites like YouTube and Vimeo. From a full length feature from the 50’s to a home recording from the neighbor family. Most people enjoy watching them without questioning the rights and risks. Filmmakers have to deal with them, but where to start? This lecture, presented by the NBF in cooperation with Go Short, focuses on the question of whether you’re boosting your career by uploading your film to the Internet or rather throwing away a breadwinning artistic creation. What are the rights and the risks a filmmaker has to deal with, and to what extent is it necessary or even crucial to protect those rights? In addition, we will attend to the matter of whether it is necessary to claim your rights in all cases, working with the online platform. More information can be found on the festival’s website or at www.nbf.nl

The NBF is the oldest association for film and television professionals in the Netherlands. The organization was founded in 1952 and has approximately 450 members. With frequent network meetings, educational activities and theme nights they bring together colleagues and competitors. 10 GOSHORT/2011

INDUSTRY EVENTS DEBATE ONLINE DEBATE: ONLINE FOR A LIVING ON SHORTS… & PRESENTATION CINECROWD FRI 18/3 – 15:30-16:45 – FESTIVAL LOUNGE

Finding new media pathways towards a true short film career Turning a passion for shorts into a full career in short film creation is anything but easy. Do online platforms offer unexpected career chances for short filmmakers? It’s a new question. Covering uncharted ground is what Go Short does best, which is why we tackle this issue in a public debate. How do we turn short film into a long-term means of making a living through online platforms? Are short filmmakers ready for the push? Which platform should we choose for release? Is our content likely to be successful online? And what is online success? Is it about getting a zillion views? Or is it about catching the imagination of this or that precise community? We’ve invited experts from many areas to explore these questions. An investigative journalist will lead the discussion, tickling the speakers into revealing solutions they didn’t even know they had. Emjay Rechsteiner will talk about Filmotech, a new project to make Dutch films directly available through various devices. The legal framework of placing audio-visual material on the Internet will be the focus of Remco Klöters (Van Kaam Advocaten). In addition, CineCrowd will present its crowdfunding business model.

CINECROWD SHORT FILM MARKET Daily, in and around the Festival Lounge New media create new ways of funding your project! Get online, share, make friends and fans. Crowd funding is easier than you think! The short film industry is more than ready to welcome fresh initiatives. That must have been on the minds of a group of young creative filmmakers when they presented CineCrowd: the first online platform that brings together short-filmmakers and the public in the Netherlands. Using the basics in social media: sharing ideas, getting fans and giving back exclusive features, CineCrowd believes crowd funding is a major step in financing film projects by talented filmmakers. During Go Short, CineCrowd is actively crowd funding some brand-new film projects, helping us create the first film market where buyers and investors don’t need a festival badge. TALKS AND SPECIALS LECTURE + FILM: STOP-MOTION BY NIAF (IN DUTCH)

TALK: INTERVIEW DUTCH TALENT (IN DUTCH)

Thu 17/3 – 15:30 – LUX 6 – € 6,50 Animator and art academy lecturer Robin Noorda (NIAf) takes us on a journey through the history of stop-motion animation. Although this technique is over 100 years old, it has never lost its popularity. Noorda tells more about the historical context of the films in the Stop-Motion program, like Jiri Trnka’s influential political satire The Hand (1965). This film about the plight of the artist under a totalitarian cultural policy was admired by the Chechoslovakian people, but banned by the communist government.

Fri 18/3 – 20:00 – LUX 6 – free You might just run into our special guests Hanro Smitsman, Arne Toonen en Danyael Sugawara, the three Dutch directors will be around for the whole festival. If you want to see and hear more of them, be sure to visit the interview presented by Isolde Hallensleben on Friday night. The talk fits nicely in the slot between two Dutch Talent screenings.

TALK: TALK SHOW Thu 17/3 – 22:30 – Festival Lounge – free The latest news from the festival! Constant Hoogenbosch will invite several guests to talk about their current projects and plans for the future.

12 GOSHORT/2011

TALK + FILM: STOP-MOTION WITH JOB, JORIS & MARIEKE Sat 19/3 – 20:30 – LUX 6 – € 8 / € 6,50* Dutch animation trio Job, Joris & Marieke is mad about stop-motion. With great enthusiasm they will guide us through the program CLIPS AND BITS, with the best music video’s, commercials and making of’s. An inspiring and foremost enjoyable evening!

WELCOME WELCOME TO THE THIRD EDITION OF GO SHORT – INTERNATIONAL SHORT FILM FESTIVAL NIJMEGEN We were blown away by the huge amount of entries submitted this year. More than two thousand films were viewed and judged by our selection teams. In total, Go Short will screen 280 films. One hundred and seven of these are selected for our European and Dutch competitions and ten more for our online competition. The Cinepoem competition, a special program we present with our partners Wintertuin and European Foundation Joris Ivens, contains eleven more shorts. We are honored to present you with three of the finest Dutch upcoming filmmakers. A selection of shorts by acclaimed Dutch directors Hanro Smitsman, Arne Toonen and Danyael Sugawara, make up our Dutch Talent program. They each recently debuted with their first feature film but still have a thing for shorts. We are proud to announce that Sugawara’s brand new short After You will premiere at Go Short. To draw more attention to Dutch short films we initiated the Dutch Platform in our library. Here you will find an extensive collection of recent Dutch shorts. Searching for new Dutch talent? Make sure you visit our student programs presented by HKU and ArtEZ, two Dutch art schools that have collaborated with us from the very start.

After visiting the Vila do Conde film festival in Portugal this summer, our suspicions were confirmed: Portuguese shorts are booming! Together with short film agency Agência, we selected eleven films made by very promising filmmakers. For those of us who, in times of 3D and CGI, still long for craftsmanship and the real stuff, we offer a program dedicated to stop-motion. All credits go to Dutch animation trio Job, Joris & Marieke, whom curated two astonishing programs that will make your mouth water. We are grateful that, even in times of financial hardship, many partners remain committed and new ones are willing to team up. Now in our third year, we are ready to take Go Short to the next level. We are happy to see many creative ideas emerging. This year will see the introduction of our new youth program, our educational school program and our CineCrowd film market. CineCrowd brings us the first public film funding market at a film festival ever! We could go on for hours, but we promised to keep it short. Let’s go, we hope you enjoy! Lisa ter Berg and Kirsten Ruber Festival directors

BREAKING SHORTS JURY STUDENT COMPETITION

DAAN BAKKER (NL)

KRISTIAN CLAAS (NL)

PEDRO SERRAZINA (PO)

At sixteen, Daan Bakker knew he wanted to be a filmmaker, but he decided to gain some life experience first. After playing in a Peruvian TV series, briefly studying film and television, training for theatre and a couple of years loafing around, he decided the time had come to start the directing course at the Netherlands Film and TV Academy. In 2009 he graduated with Jacco’s Film, which was selected for Breaking Shorts and won the Go Short audience award. His new film Bukowski won the City of Utrecht award for best debut film at the Netherlands Film Festival 2010, and is part of this year’s Dutch Competition at Go Short.

Kristian Claas, editor and graduate of the Netherlands Film and TV Academy, is currently working as a freelance editor for national and international productions. His focus is mainly on human interest documentaries that don’t shy away from the abstract. Following his primal instinct and with a critical look at rhythm and structural chaos, he will judge this year’s student shorts.

Pedro Serrazina quit his studies in architecture to start a professional training in animation. His first film, Tale of the Cat and the Moon, which premiered at Cannes in 1996, received 15 international awards and is part of this year’s A Portuguesa program. While developing a teaching career, he has continued to develop his skills in a wide variety of media. He regularly takes part in jury panels at international film festivals. His most recent film, The Eyes of the Lighthouse, was a Dutch-Portuguese co-production, and has been selected for this year’s Animation Competition.

FICTION

EUROPEAN COMPETITION SHORT TIP Oppressed Majority turns the world upside down with a small change. ln a playful manner it shows how, even nowadays, emancipation is faltering.

Often enough, short fiction film has been described – even by myself – as the playground of cinema. But this description doesn’t quite do this genre justice. Short film deserves a robust metaphor, one that captures the dilemmas portrayed in these films, as well as their dazzling beauty. There is one thing the short films that came my way these past years have in common: they often use creative ways of storytelling to bring developments in our society to the fore. The subjects may change over time, but short films keep reflecting on these developments in fascinating ways. A mirror maze would be a better metaphor. An infinite reflection of ourselves, and the many ways we relate to our society. Dirk van der Straaten

Dirk van der Straaten is one of our fiction selectors, who works with us for the second year now. He was involved in organizing the First and Second Amsterdam Film Night and has been a program maker for cinema De Balie in Amsterdam since 2006.

Incident by a Bank

Yuri Lennon’s Landing on Alpha 46

Director: Ruben Östlund Sweden / 2010 / 35mm / 12’

Director: Anthony Vouardoux Germany / 2009 / 35mm / 15’ / Dutch premiere

Incident by a Bank is a detailed and humorous account of a failed bank robbery: A single take where over 96 people perform a meticulous choreography for the camera. It recreates an actual event that took place in Stockholm back in June 2006; it’s an observation in real-time and a study of how people act and react to the unexpected.

In an ordinary home in Algeria, Yamina, Nabila and Imen are regularly beaten up by their brother Tarek. Their mother witnesses the violence without doing anything to stop the tragic abuse her children are subjected to.

After his landing on Jupiter moon Alpha46, the cosmonaut Yuri Lennon is confronted with an extraordinary paradox... Undocked from the mother ship, Yuri begins his starting journey through space, which leads him to the end of the world as we know it. An amazing 15 minute one-shot movie… the countdown is on.

DOCUMENTARY

EUROPEAN COMPETITION SHORT TIP Sambuca Kid is like a slap in your face. Short, powerful and disturbing.

Ultimately, what you hope for in any documentary, is that it moves you, surprises you, is thought-provoking, and preferably all of the above. While selecting shorts, you keep in mind what Go Short stands for, and with this third edition this is clearer than ever. This year there are fewer ‘fly on the wall’ documentaries. Instead of following a main character on the road, we encounter documentaries which are more obviously constructed and directed. This results in beautifully stylized and visually surprising films. Of particular note is the Scandinavian invasion of filmmakers who are not afraid to experiment with form, while not sacrificing the story. The selection includes a number of films that may not, at first, comply with the image of the traditional documentary, but require a little more of the viewer’s attention. Astrid Bussink

Astrid Bussink, a documentary maker herself, is our external expert for the selection of the documentary program. Her debut film is the award-winning documentary The Angelmakers. At the moment she’s working on ‘Constructions of Happiness’, a project about finding happiness, or at least constructing the image of it.

A couple happily lives out its well-ordered existence. In one of the rooms of their suburban house the two share a curious hobby: they spend a great deal of their time playing in and recreating a world of miniature trains and peaceful landscapes. Gradually, the two landscapes intersect; the miniature world becomes entangled with the real one and confronts its whims. Trickland then turns into an ode to life and love.

100 year old Micky has been a member of the local bathing club for almost half a decade. Every day, every season, she swims with her friends at her beloved bathing club. From her story we gain a perspective on ourselves, and on how our existence is but the fruit of coincidence.

Over the 3500 km that separate Bishkek in Kyrgyzstan from Moscow, people speak about what’s on their mind: immigration, the old days in the USSR, dreams, racism and hopes. Roaming across the frequencies of Central Asia we discover a remote part of the world that is rarely portrayed.

Out Of Love

Director: Susanna Helke Finland / 2010 / video / 30’ / Dutch premiere

Director: Birgitte Stærmose Denmark / 2009 / video / 29’

A group of guys get together on a playground in a wooded suburb of Helsinki. A global diaspora has thrown these boys together from all corners of the world, and they have known each other all their lives. Their rootless existences have bound these boys together. Under the hysterical cacophony, they are thinking about the big and difficult questions in life.

Fusing documentary and fiction, Out of Love depicts the lives of children trying to survive the aftermath of war in Kosovo by selling cigarettes on the street. Through monologues performed by the children against the eerie backdrops of Pristina, the film tells their gripping and sad story of memory, loss and fear.

Graffiti covered New York streets and bars are their stages. Spitting Ink is a stylized portrait of a worldwide underground phenomenon.

ANIMATION

EUROPEAN COMPETITION SHORT TIP Paths of Hate is a Polish computer animation, where the authors have succeeded in creating a very individual style of 3D. Popping action and a clear message, conveyed without being pedantic.

Humorous, absurd or very personal, but always recognizable and therefore significant. This selection shows the power of animation as a mature narrative medium, and the wealth of styles that are fitting for the subjects. The overall quality of this year’s animation entries was high, with a few unexpected highlights. A large selection of films rightly addresses the suffering of the world. These filmmakers ask viewers how to proceed, or to hold a mirror to their faces. On a smaller scale, the relationships and problems of particular people are viewed in exquisite detail. Egbert de Ruiter

The animation shorts are selected with help of Egbert de Ruiter, now in his third year. Egbert is the Senior Lecturer 3D Animation and Visual effects at the Utrecht School of the Arts (HKU). Five of his students produced the trailer for this year’s festival. GOSHORT/2011 37

An innovative puppet musical, which combines emotionally strong music, unconfined space, passion and fear. A story about a quarry where ten men are working. They resemble the rocks which they move everyday in the mechanical rhythm of their work. One evening, this rhythm is disturbed because the quarry is visited by the foreman’s wife...

Inés travels to India to visit her friend Ámár, who has been living in a mental institution for years. Inés remembers the last days they spent together and her promise to return.

Director: José Miguel Ribeiro Portugal / 2010 / video / 17’ / Dutch premiere

Paths of Hate is a short tale about the demons that slumber deep in the human soul and have the power to push people into the abyss of blind hate, fury and rage.

On a rocky island exposed to the elements, a lighthouse keeper lives alone with his daughter. From the top of his tower, the father keeps vigil to the horizon line and for the safety of the passing sails. With no other company, the girl develops a unique complicity with the sea, which brings her toys in the shape of debris on the shore. Following the rhythm of the waves, these objects will unveil previous events, memories that the tide cannot erase…

This is the story of a sixty day long walk in Cape Verde. No mobile phone, no watch, no plans for what to do next – only the bare essentials in the backpack. Our traveler explores the mountains, the villages, the sea, a talking tortoise, the goats, the music, the dry haze, the people of Cape Verde and an essential part of himself.

THE LABO

EUROPEAN COMPETITION SHORT TIP Voodoo is a beautiful film about a man who tries to get a grip on his fears. It has little plot, and barely gives the viewer enough input to visualize the protagonist. The film gradually unfolds, while carefully guarding its secret. It has a strong, fatalistic atmosphere and unexpected funny moments.

The experimental character of these films lies not in formal or material experiments, but in the search for different ways to tell a story. A large number of films give a deliberate glimpse behind the scenes, and show the ‘flipside’ of the sets, the acting, the actors and their roles. Yet there is no common denominator for this selection, except maybe the high cinematic quality of all films. Lots of attention has been given to camera work and editing. Without the rush of video clip-styled editing, it gives the viewer the chance to explore the image. Even in a short time span, the images get enough time to work their way in. Manon Bovenkerk

This is the first year in which Manon Bovenkerk contributes to the shorts selection for The Labo. She works as a visual artist and is a curator for ZAAL5, the platform for moving images at Filmhuis Den Haag. Previously she worked for the Urban Explorers Festival in Dordrecht and a number of independent art spaces. GOSHORT/2011 45

Erään Hyönteisen Tuho

In a lifeless urban landscape where time itself has stopped its crawl, a mad ballet is commencing and a newly hatched butterfly is about to die. This tragic story was constructed using dead insects gathered from forgotten attics and tool sheds, between window panels and cobwebs. Too Damn Late is an ode to crafting the written word, with cameras searching the storefronts of Buenos Aires, creating a visual homage to typography, old and new alike. The film is directed by Anna Martine Nilsen and María Antolini, with Kjetil Fredriksen’s song Too Damn Late as the keynote and companion.

All sympathetic magic is based upon two principles: the first called the Law of Similarity says that “likes produce likes,” or that an effect resembles its cause; the second, called the Law of Contagion or contact says that all things having been in contact with each other continue to react upon one and another at a distance even after they have been severed or disconnected. A fearful man meets a disquiet woman. Do you believe in magic?

Is there such a thing as a collective memory? And, assuming there is, would it be possible to represent it in some way? To question it? A report from the land of the Brothers Grimm.

An audio-visual trip into the genre of drugs in the cinema. The collage focuses on the aspects of use and abuse of soft and hard drugs, visual drug experience, sexuality and drugs, nightmares and metamorphoses, death and psychedelics. At the centre are attempts to lend mind-altering drug experiences a visual and auditory form. What’s left of the – cineastic – trip the next morning?

Versions (2010) is a visual essay, a documentarytype film on protected authorship and piracy in various fields of creative production. Placed in a historical perspective, this copyright manifesto even goes back to the Classics and the 16thcentury iconoclasm. The film brings up numerous examples of reuse, such as, classic literature and its many followers, copies of classic sculptures, cam movies, Photoshopped news photos, and reuse of the same scenes in various animation films.

Director: Nicolas Provost fiction|documentary / Belgium / 2010 / digital / 20’

Director: Gerbrand Burger animation / The Netherlands / 2010 / video / 10’

The second part of the trilogy where Provost investigates the boundaries of fiction and reality by filming everyday life with a hidden high resolution camera and editing the cinematic images by using cinematographic and narrative codes from the Hollywood film language. Provost takes his hidden camera to Las Vegas and films real Hollywood stars, to turn the glorious and ambiguous power of the gambling capital into an exciting crime story.

Rihla is a short film that shows the imaginary journey of a man who travels from Baku to Amsterdam. His character is composed of a collection of literary fragments dating from the 14th century until today. The original texts are largely written by Arabs travelling to Europe. The word Rihla means journey is search of wisdom or knowledge and is know by Ibn Battuta’s book by that title that forms a travelogue.

Director: Maite Abella choreography / The Netherlands / 2009 / video / 9’

Director: Daya Cahen documentary / The Netherlands / 2010 / video / 10’

The Origin of Creatures is inspired by the biblical story of the Tower of Babel and is set in an imaginary future where the world is hit by a catastrophe. Among the remains of a devastated city lives that what is left of humanity. Human bodies are divided into separated parts of the body and are fused to special beings.

A meditation on the generational tension between a mother and daughter, captured during a harmonious stroll to the beach – a prelude to the wrestling sequence. In the increasing disarray of their intermingled bodies, a touching poignancy resurfaces.

At a military academy school in Moscow (the only one of its kind in the world), girls aged 11 to 17 are trained to be ideal citizens. They learn to sew, march, cook, sing, shoot, use make-up and plan military actions. They are trained not just to be ideal patriots, but also ideal women.

Dawn

Director: Margo Onnes fiction / The Netherlands / 2010 / digital / 11’

Director: Erwin Olaf fiction / The Netherlands / 2010 / digital / 5’

Through the decor of a sixties villa with pool, a young man wanders around musing. Haunted by the memory of a lost summer love that surrounds him with delusions, he gets caught in an uneasy condition of insomnia. Muse, an ode to classic French pool cinema, explores how the pool can be a cinematic symbol of the protagonist’s troubled mind.

Dawn is almost literally the negative pendant of Erwin Olaf’s video work and photo series Dusk. Both videos portray an ‘upper middle class’ family in a stylized home interior dating from the early 20th century. As in so many of Olaf’s works, Dusk and Dawn are characterized by an oppressive, almost suffocating atmosphere and an extreme degree of artificiality – the characters appear to be hiding behind a façade of suppressed emotions.

BREAKING SHORTS

STUDENT COMPETITION

Films that are compelling, society driven, innovative and made by emerging talent. With 650 entries from film students from all over Europe, it was a real challenge to narrow it down to a varied selection of 20 films. All in all it’s an interesting program, with something for everyone. We found this year’s animation selection to be especially strong. Mobile is downright hilarious and Parade stands out because of its admiring simplicity in the use of color and shape. In the fiction department we were especially touched by Small Change, where the double meaning of the title reflects the somewhat hopeless situation the characters find themselves in. Breaking Ground

The films in the Breaking Shorts student competition are selected by Breaking Ground, a young and dynamic platform for European student films. Since the first edition, Breaking Ground and Go Short have been working together with great enthusiasm. In addition to selecting the competition program, Breaking Ground co-organizes the Go Short Student Campus. Breaking Ground travels all across Europe to pick up, screen, and exchange European student films. The platform brings young filmmakers together and introduces them to the film industry. DUTCH COMPETITION SHORT TIP Anvers shows us a real and raw image of a family in times of financial crisis. The camera stays close to the skin of the characters, so you can’t escape their fate. The frustration and hopelesness of the situation keeps a hold on you throughout, and long after the film.

DUTCH SHORTS Dutch film is diverse and has been well-received outside of the Netherlands for many years. With a lot of upcoming talent, our national short film products remain in the spotlight. For two consecutive years the Go Short audience award was won by a Dutch film. This year we made a selection of our twenty favorites, with some familiar faces meeting the new kids on the block. Bodyparts on the loose, killer bunnies, skateboarding and urban poetry are just some of the elements you will encounter in this competition where all genres come together. Don´t hesitate, Go Dutch!

Director: Bert Pot & Marcel Visbeen documentary / the Netherlands / 2010 / video / 9’

Director: Nina Spiering & Mirka Duijn fiction / the Netherlands / 2010 / 35mm / 12’

Director: Evert de Beijer animation / the Netherlands / 2010 / 35mm / 12’

Highly musical, experimental black and white film. An observation of Irish pilgrims who, sometimes barefoot, climb holy and fog covered mount Croagh Patrick. Almost timeless first part of Ocobar’s American Bioscope; a collaboration between musical trio Ocobar and director Marcel Visbeen.

Manitoba is a short movie about Frank who washes ashore on a strange island. He seeks refuge in the only pub in a desolate village: cafe Manitoba.

A high school student is addicted to a computer game in which he protects a sexy female mega singer as a bodyguard, against all kinds of attacks. That way he “scores” her love. But that addiction goes at the cost of his home work and his sense of reality, until a girl of his class gives him a real kiss.

ARNE TOONEN, DANYAEL SUGAWARA & HANRO SMITSMAN ‘FILMMAKERS THAT WANT TO TELL STORIES’

PHOTO: GEMASIUL

While other film festivals devote retrospective film programs to grand oeuvres of established directors, Go Short dedicates an entire program to three filmmakers who just recently made a name for themselves. Hanro Smitsman, Arne Toonen and Danyael Sugawara caught

the public’s eye with their short films, and all three soon successfully debuted with a feature film. Danyael: “Of the three of us, Hanro has been working the longest, but we are all still shaping our careers. This is a chance for us to show: ‘This is what we do!’”

In the last weeks before the festival, Danyael Sugawara made the short film Na U, that will premiere at Go Short. “It’s going to be a statement against the cutbacks in the cultural sector. Nobody who participates makes any money on it, including myself, but sometimes you just have say ‘fuck it’ and act on your own impulse. Things can be a little more daring, nothing happens if you just sit and wait.” After working on several longer films, Hanro Smitsman wants to make a short again. “When I go to a film festival, and see those short films... they are like little gems! You can keep on watching them. Telling a story in just a little time that can touch you even more than a long film, is something very special. A large painting doesn’t necessarily make a bigger impression.” Arne Toonen recently received a Platinum Film for his feature Dik Trom. After years of making commercials and music videos, he readied himself for feature length GOSHORT/2011 75

DUTCH TALENT through short film. “30 second stories were natural to me. To move from this to 90 minutes would be quite arrogant, so at first I had to learn how to work with 10 minutes, and 20, and 40.” According to Arne, some stories are only suitable for a certain length. “Some ideas are so much stronger when they’re concise.” The length of a film doesn’t matter, according to Danyael. “It all revolves around telling a story. But there are much fewer opportunities to make short films than to make longer films.” This is why a festival for short films is a necessity. Danyael: “Where else would you see a short film? Back in the day you saw short films before the main film, but that changed long ago.” Hanro: “When you look abroad you see that short film festivals have claimed their spot, making sure that short film doesn’t get overlooked.” Arne and Danyael studied together at the Netherlands Film and Television Academy, the same place where Hanro graduated. What are their thoughts on

sharing the spotlight? Arne: “I think it’s awesome that the three of us have been given the chance to shine. Together we can bring the love for Dutch film to the next level. Danyael and Hanro differ from me completely in the way they make films. They know how to do things that I would never be able to. In this sense, the three of us each have our own outstanding characteristics.” Danyael: “Arne is much more capable of telling a story in just five minutes, whereas I quickly get the feeling of being stuck.” Arne: “I’ve been making commercials for seven years, and what I learned there was how to tell a story concisely. You’re forced to give something your personal touch, and learn what people can and can’t see.” Hanro: “It’s good to meet these filmmakers who love to tell stories. That’s all that matters, not success, but telling each other stories. As Kundera says: ‘Let’s tell each other made up stories, so we can find the truth.’”

STOP-MOTION When we were first asked to compile a stop-motion program for Go Short, there were some films we instantly knew would have to be included. Ship of the Ether by George Pal was one of them. One day we saw this film and we were all deeply impressed, not just because it looked so wonderful, but because of the special technique George Pal used. In stopmotion nowadays, puppets with flexible skeletons are often used that can be put in any position. But George Pal didn’t use anything like that. He made his puppets out of wood, and for each fragment of a movement he used a different puppet. We are also looking forward to showing Tim Burton’s Vincent. It’s magnificent how Tim Burton manages to combine his passion for Vincent Price and the poems of Edgar Allen Poe in both the design and the storyline.

OUT OF COMPETITION Besides these shorts, there were a number of commercials that just had to be in the program. Play-Doh by Sony Bravia for instance, in which New York gets flooded by clay bunnies, or Natural Gas in which the interior of a house is slowly covered in wool completely. Watching stop-motion animations is in itself a great joy. What could be more beautiful than the magic of bringing lifeless objects to life? However, just using a cool animation technique won’t get you there. Design and storyline are essential to making a film enjoyable, and therefore these are the other criteria we based our selection on.

A PORTUGUESA In the last decade, the production panorama of Portuguese short films has broadened considerably. The Portuguese cinema changed its identity, and found a new creative and professional perspective. Never before have so many short films been produced, and of such great quality and diversity. Corollary to this is the vast number of awards, selections and the substantial attention that Portuguese authors have been receiving internationally. The Agência finds itself in the center of this new paradigm and functions as the promoter and distributor of Portuguese short films worldwide. In cooperation with Agência, Go Short presents a program that features the richness of Portuguese cinema and Portuguese culture through some of the most emblematic Portuguese films of the last fifteen years.

OUT OF COMPETITION This focus program highlights a new generation of multifaceted, unquiet, innovative and exciting filmmakers. Miguel Gomes and João Pedro Rodrigues are two directors that have achieved international recognition and status. Zepe, José Miguel Ribeiro, Regina Pessoa and Pedro Serrazina are among the most awarded animation directors. The fame Portuguese animation enjoys worldwide is built upon their masterpieces. Pedro Caldas and Sandro Aguilar are recognizable by their audacious proposals, and their continuing drive to experiment. João Nicolau, Cláudia Varejão and João Salaviza, because of their singular languages, are the most secure promises of a younger generation of Portuguese directors. Now that Agência looks back on the developments in the last decade, and enjoys the best that has been produced so far, we can look forward with great anticipation to what this decade will bring. Salette Ramalho (Agência)

Agência – The Portuguese Short Film Agency was created in January 1999 by the same team of Curtas Vila do Conde – International Film Festival. The Agency has a catalogue of more than 140 audiovisual works, including animation, documentary, fiction and experimental film, and all formats, providing that their duration is less than 60 minutes. Their activity consists in the promotion and diffusion of these works through film events, festivals and short film markets, as well as distributors, television or any other channels worldwide. HKU PRESENTS

Never a fixed recipe and always with its own distinctive signature. The Utrecht School of the Arts (HKU) is a fertile breeding ground for young filmmakers. At the Faculty of Art, Media and Technology, students explore the possibilities new media and technologies may provide in the field of filmmaking. The HKU program includes animation films, short fiction, documentaries and music videos produced in the last year. The diversity of the production gives a good impression of the many skills these students develop at the academy. Several students will attend the screening to present their work.

NIGHT OF THE CINEPOEM In the era of cross-disciplinary arts, the cinepoem has become a noticeable trend in filmmaking. It’s history goes back to the early days of cinema, when the avant-garde of the 1920’s created cinepoems in an attempt to elevate film to an art form. Now we have a new generation of creators, readers and viewers, who grow up with a multitude of media and expressions. The cinepoem may very well be a form that is appropriate to their habits and demands. During the Night of the Cinepoem we explore this way of presenting poetry and a poetic cinematographic language to new generations.

92 GOSHORT/2011

OUT OF COMPETITION The night’s main event is the cinepoem competition, for the best European short film based on a poem. Together with European Foundation Joris Ivens and literary production company Wintertuin, Go Short has selected eleven of today’s best European cinepoems. A jury, consisting of filmmaker Amos Mulder, poet Tonnus Oosterhoff and Joke Ballintijn (Netherlands Media Arts Institute) will award one of the films with the WintertuinJoris Ivens Cinepoem Award worth € 2.500. As an introduction to the genre, the classic cinepoem Regen by Joris Ivens will be screened. Amos Mulder will premiere Verkeerde Raadhuizen, a cinepoem produced especially for this evening.

A day in the life of a rain-shower. A classic city symphony by Joris Ivens films Amsterdam and its changing appearence during a rain-shower. A very poetic film with changing moods, following the change from sunny Amsterdam streets to rain drops in the canals and the pooring rain on windows, umbrellas, trams and streets, untill it clears up and the sun breaks through once again.

‘Verkeerde Raadhuizen’ (literally: Wrong City Halls) is a poem by H.H. ter Balkt, who is widely considered to be one of the best poets in the Netherlands. Wintertuin commissioned young filmmaker Amos Mulder to produce a new film inspired by H.H. Ter Balkt’s poem. Mulder received critical acclaim with his short Ghost of Icarus, including an honorable mention at Go Short last year.

Today there is a certain stigma that surrounds smoking, but that wasn’t always the case: For many years the silver screen was practically paradise for smokers. Smoke Gets in your Eyes is an homage to the stars that smoked on the silver screen.

Alcohol lifts the spirits, ladies try to get a thrill for their exacerbated lives with champagne and men are meanwhile competing in drinking. What was to be pleasure and relaxation sometimes ends in loss of control and addiction.

The video Don’t Bogart that Joint is an audio-visual trip into the genre of drugs in the cinema. The topic is often treated speculatively and superficially, but in addition there also are increasingly serious examination of this ambivalent problem.

MEESTERMAKERS: DOCUMENTARY KAREL DOING AND JOHN APPEL Every year a renowned filmmaker meets with a rising talent in the Meestermakers program. In this year’s Meestermakers we welcome two masters of documentary, John Appel and Karel Doing. They are well-known Dutch documentary makers with very divergent styles of filmmaking. John Appel reached a large audience for the first time with his film Zij Gelooft in Mij, about the famous Dutch singer Andre Hazes. Since then he has made several documentaries, the latest (De As van Phoenix) clearly having a different form than the earlier ones, as he now uses green screen and image manipulation techniques. Appel is experienced in giving master classes and workshops, e.g. at IDFA, and produces films with Hedy Honigmann.

100 GOSHORT/2011

Karel Doing is known for his experimental films and is co-founder of Filmbank, which has now been enveloped by the EYE institute. The past years he has experimented with genres and narratives. His latest project in Suriname resulted in the documentary Saamaka and the experimental short Looking for Apoekoe. Doing’s film Liquidator recently premiered at the IFFR.

At Go Short, Appel and Doing will give a master class where six participating documentary makers will receive feedback on their work and plans for new films. Together they will look for ways to develop their plans, for example through the use of interactive techniques or new media.

MEESTERMAKERS MASTERCLASS DOCUMENTARY AND NEW MEDIA Sat 19/3 – 11:00-16:00 – Vlaams Arsenaal (not open to the public)

MEESTERMAKERS PUBLIC TALK JOHN APPEL AND KAREL DOING Sat 19/3 – 20:00 – LUX 2 – € 8

GO SHORT STUDENT CAMPUS 2011

102 GOSHORT/2011

KEEPING IT SHORT AND INTENSE Every year, talented young filmmakers from all over Europe gather in Nijmegen to share their experiences and build upon them. They follow creative workshops, meet professionals and eventually create a short film, adding to their ambitious filmography. The Go Short Student Campus is an initiative of Go Short and Breaking Ground, the platform for European student film. Both organizations feel there is a need to give talented, aspiring filmmakers a chance to learn more about their profession, incorporate the influences of various cultures and broaden their vision of international cinema.

This year they will rise to the challenge of converting their ideas about European identity into ultra-short films of 60 to 90 seconds. Under the guidance of Dutch Talent directors Hanro Smitsman, Danyael Sugawara and Arne Toonen, they will turn a basic notion into a short that will premier at the Go Short award show‌ all in just five days. Because of the time pressure, the campus members will enjoy the festival experience in their own creative bubble. Of course they will also have time to come out of their cave to shoot their films, get some sunlight and join in the festivities. If you get the chance to meet them, take it, as these will be the filmmakers of tomorrow!

TAKE A LOOK INTO THE FUTURE Are you a European film student who’d like to attend inspiring lectures, motivational workshops and create the most splendid films together with other young filmmakers from all over Europe? Next year there will be a new chance to join the Go Short Student Campus. Keep an eye on www.breakingground.eu and www.goshort.nl, or follow our tweets at @BG_EU and @goshortfilmfest.

You can follow the day-to-day campus proceedings on the internet: breakingground.eu/campus2011

THE 48 HOUR FILM PROJECT NIJMEGEN It may seem impossible to make an entire film in just two days, but many teams have done it already! Last year we introduced this worldwide film competition to Nijmegen and were overwhelmed by the enthusiastic responses from local and regional filmmakers. Through this competition, the 48 Hour Film Project encourages filmmakers and would-be filmmakers to get out there and make films. The tight deadline of 48 hours puts the focus squarely on the filmmakers, emphasizing creativity and teamwork skills. While the time limit places an unusual restriction on the filmmakers, it is also liberating by putting the emphasis on actions rather than words.

48 HOUR JURY Kevin Toma Film critic for newspapers De Volkskrant and De Gelderlander and various websites. Ellen Kocken Director of DZIGA, supporting filmmakers and video artists. Frank Hoeve Producer at Talent United and Dutch Mountain Movies.

48 HOUR 1 This year the number of competing teams has grown considerably. In a hectic and sleepless weekend, the teams write, script, shoot, edit, score and render a film. Friday night each team is given a character, a prop, a line of dialogue and a genre, all to be included in their film, which must be handed in across the finish line on Sunday. At Go Short, all completed films of this year’s 48 Hour Film Project Nijmegen will be screened for the first time. The jury will decide the winner of the 48 Hour Award, who will then compete in the international final.
