The UK’s first genetics research department In 1953, Dr James Watson and Sir Francis Crick made a discovery at the University of Cambridge that would revolutionise the field of genetics. They uncovered the structure of DNA, often referred to as the ‘blueprint for life’. Recognising the need to bring such

vital science and medicine together to benefit patients, The Clinical Genetics Research Unit was established at the UCL Institute of Child Health (ICH). Founded in April 1957 by the Medical Research Council, it was the first genetics research department of its kind in the UK.
