INTEREST with Amelia Grose

Photojournalist Amelia Grose goes out and about meeting the people of the Central Coast.

Meet Ruby Mac - She’s 5 Ruby has donated her hair to the ‘Variety’s Princess Charlotte Alopecia Program’ to have them make it into a wig. She had recently seen Turia Pitt on the cover of a magazine who had been caught in a bushfire and her mum spoke with her about the consequences of severe burns, including permanent hair loss. This reminded her of a friend who has cancer and was going through chemo – as a result, she has lost all of her hair. After she processed this, in an instant she said to her mum, “Mum, ring Grandma. We’re cutting off my hair & giving it to a wig maker.” We are so proud of you Ruby. To donate your hair visit www.princesscharlottealopecia.com

Simply D’VINE

“The great thing is that we have the ability to make a positive difference to someone in everything that we do”

I know we must be doing something right when a new bride takes the time to send the most complimentary heart-felt letter of thanks, the very next day after her wedding!” Says Julia Barnes, General Manager of Somersby based catering company The D’Vine Group. “It warms my heart and makes me so proud every time.” Such letters of thanks are testimony to The D’Vine Group’s passion for providing innovative gourmet catering and the highest level of customer service possible. But before the first canapé is even served, Julia and her team work closely with their clients to ensure every detail is meticulously catered for. Menus are carefully planned using fresh seasonal produce sourced locally whenever possible, special dietary and religious requirements are handled with ease and the bride and groom invited to sample their menu at a “tasting” held in The D’Vine Group’s beautiful designer showroom at Gindurra Park Wedding & Event Centre. The whole experience gives the bride & groom peace of mind knowing their special 6

day will be stress free and truly memorable for all the right reasons. The D’Vine Group was established by Coast local, Scott Homsey. Scott began his career in the 1980′s as an apprentice at Crowne Plaza Terrigal. Scott contributed to the two award winning restaurants The Brasserie and La Mer. La Mer was awarded Best Fine Dining Restaurant NSW during his time there. Here Scott gained much experience, working with international Chefs and through the friendships that he developed, went on to travel to France to broaden his expertise and gain further insight into the industry. Settling back on the Central Coast, Scott opened his own restaurant at Hardy’s Bay and from restaurant beginnings went on to start catering for private events. Scott’s passion for excellence gained him a great reputation in the industry. The D’Vine Group is a testament to Scott’s desire to provide quality restaurant catering to everyone, no matter where the location. Julia first met Scott when they were both working at the Crowne Plaza

Terrigal. “I was the manager of award winning restaurant La Mer and Scott was the apprentice chef (a fact I often love to remind him of!” says Julia with a laugh. Together they were part of a wonderful team of individuals from all over the world and a General Manager, Walter Imoos, who epitomised the word ‘service’. Julia moved to Gosford with her family when Wyoming was just one big orange orchard and Erina was an even bigger farmer’s garden. They would travel to Gosford every weekend from Sydney where her Dad would sell blocks of land. “I remember we would always stop at Kariong and ‘count’ the lights of Gosford. One of my earliest happy memories of Gosford was a beautiful restaurant called The Orange Tree. It sat hidden in thick wisteria on the old Pizza Hut site at West Gosford. I can still recall everything about that place; from the warm greeting of the Maitre’d, the dark exotic ambience to the little wrapped After Dinner Mints. I think this restaurant was the catalyst for me to pursue a life in hospitality.” Recalls Julia.

BUSINESS

Images by Janelle Robertson Photography

Coming from an Italian heritage, food and family have always been central in her life. As a result she has always associated food with happiness. Travel became a way of experiencing so many different cuisines and cultures. From sharing a cup of tea with a homeless man on the streets of London, to having lunch with a prince in his mansion in Monte Carlo. The privilege to be able to travel and share food with amazing individuals has always been a central theme and one she shares with Scott. The D’Vine Group’s ability to cater remotely has seen them form strong relationships with local tourism venues including Glenworth Valley Outdoor Adventures and The Australian Reptile Park, providing inbound International tourism operators with a unique Australiana BBQ experience that has recently secured them the Hunter & Central Coast Tourism Award for Excellence in the “Tourism Restaurants & Catering Services” category. These awards recognise local businesses who’ve set the highest

standard in customer service, product and service delivery, sustainability, training and development, operations and business planning. “Winning this award was the culmination of a total team effort over the past 18 months. Our catering crew are our greatest asset and we are so proud of their hard work and total dedication to every detail during our client’s events” Says Julia. The D’Vine team, which includes Operations Manager Francis Kelliher, Executive Chef Markus Allenspach, Sous Chef Christian Gardelli and Apprentice Chef Reece Jackson all come from different corners of the globe, yet share a common vision. They all have been fortunate to have careers and lives surrounded by interesting people, amazing food and memorable travels. Most importantly, they all agree that it is now about sharing and giving back. This is now the catalyst that motivates them in everything they do. “We want to share our knowledge and experience and we do this by engaging every client in a meaningful

way. We share our equipment and resources with local start up businesses to give them a helping hand in establishing their own business. It is our desire to see them succeed and hope that the support we can offer in the early days will ensure their long term success” Says Julia. D’Vine also supports and encourages local staff through traineeships and free training for hospitality students. Their first trainee Amelia now works within the industry, realizing her dream of starting her own Event Management business. It is this influence that makes The D’Vine Group know that their business is ‘successful’. Through supporting charities such as OzHarvest, Coast Shelter, The Variety Club and Camp Quality The D’Vine Group have been able to make a difference in some small way. “The great thing is that we have the ability to make a positive difference to someone in everything that we do and we see this as a real benefit to local businesses and the greater community.” Gosford City Magazine | October / November 2014

amie Oliver is the founder and driving force behind the Food Revolution:- an incentive that has inspired millions around the world. He is, however, just one man and needs all the help he can get to drive this real food movement forward.

The Annual Event; Food Revolution Day on May 16 was celebrated at over 9,100 events in 121 countries, with a live stream on U Tube. Streams of volunteers were sharing their passion from various groups, communities and schools around the World.

Julie Clark from Kincumber is our own Central Coast Ambassador for Jamie Olivers Food Revolution. This is all about inspiring people of all ages to reconnect with food and make better food choices for life. To help children understand where food comes from, how to cook it and how if affects their bodies. Connecting with people in the community, working together with schools, nursing homes, restaurants and local businesses.

Julie, with the help of The Good Guys and the local Woolworths management and staff from both Erina and Umina, chopped, wrapped, laughed, and shouted out to the world in a whirlwind of a day. Together with the children from many Central Coast schools, ignited the Central Coasts participation in the Food Revolution. A huge “ whoo hoo and well done”to all who were involved on the day.

“ We want to inspire change in people’s food habits and to promote the mission for better food and education for everyone”. All around the globe people are working together to make a difference. Julie has a passion for the local community. She has visited planting programs, community gardens and retirement villages, some which boast abundant community gardens with an array of fresh veggies and herbs. Julie has shared cooking classes, recipes and ideas with those who are interested in seasonal cooking. “Communication is the key”Julie says “Its time for all age groups to come together and enjoy all things simple in cooking. Most of us have a favorite recipe that we like to share with our families or friends. It feels great to share what we make and reconnect with where our food comes from.”

With an increased awareness of the worldwide obesity crisis Julie believes that many of our lifestyle diseases may be preventable. Getting back to the basics of wholefood nutrition, encouraging planting programs, children’s educational programs, and with the availability of fresh ingredients for all, we can make those changes. To enable every one in our community to learn how food grows, where it comes from and how to cook it, is a recipe for success. Jamie Oliver is an inspiration to us all! Julie, along with her friend and business associated Amanda Delalat from Organics2you, aim to get the Central Coast on the Worldwide Map. This is a place full of wonderful things to do, places to visit, and healthy culinary delights to enjoy! – They blog, they facebook, they tweet and share all they know with the Central Coast community. The two once Air Hostesses

aim to provide the Central Coast with their culinary delights. No trolleys here just back to basics simple cooking! Want to know where to find us? – Come say hello at one of the many events planned for the Central Coast. Find out what we’re up to and how you can get involved. GOSFORD

$464 MILLION Worth of development applications lodged for Gosford CBD in August Mayor of Gosford City Lawrie McKinna recently announced that a whopping $464 million worth of development applications were received in August this year for the Gosford CBD area alone. Mayor McKinna said that 22 applications were lodged with Council last month for the CBD, including a $157 million proposal for a mixed used development right in the heart of Mann Street. “This latest influx of applications is proof that rejuvenating Gosford is no longer just a pipe dream,” Mayor McKinna said. “We’ve always been confident about the town centre’s amazing potential as well as certain that there was plenty of interest from potential investors. “We just needed to put the right incentives in place to get the applications rolling through the door. “Even still, receiving almost $500 million worth of applications in a month has definitely topped all our expectations. “These applications include everything from new retail, commercial, restaurant and residential development all along Mann Street through to new medical and childcare developments in Showground Road. Chief Executive Officer Paul Anderson said it was no secret the flood of recent applications had coincided with a number of key announcements and

10

incentives that Council has been right behind over the past two years to drive development in the CBD. “Business and investor confidence in our city is now at an all time high after two years of highlighting what the area has to offer and making it easier for our customers to do business with us,” Mr Anderson added. “This year we’ve also extended another incentive for CBD development that offers a bonus 30 per cent increase in floor space and building height to eligible applicants. “Plus, last month we had the federal treasurer stand in our city and commit to start work next year on a purpose-built Australian Tax Office agency employing 600 people in Gosford. “This all comes on the back of state and federal government, and community support for many of our other key proposals like the performing arts centre, Kibbleplex and a reinvigorated Gosford waterfront. “Now we need to look closely at all these applications and others to see whether we can get the cranes in the sky over Gosford and start building the worldclass city the Central Coast deserves,” Mr Anderson said. A Massive Vote of Confidence for Gosford Gosford is about to become the City of the Future with the most ambitious development project to hit Gosford in over a decade with a development application lodged with Gosford Council for a 28-storey mixed use development on the corner of Mann and Donnison Streets in Gosford (old Union Hotel site) on Thursday 28th August. To be known as Mariners Plaza and developed by Gosford City Development Pty Ltd the project, with an estimated value of $190 million, it will comprise two residential towers above a podium containing a hotel, licensed pub, retail spaces and supermarket. Significantly the project will deliver a brand new premium hotel with function rooms, gym and pool deck with associated restaurants and bar. It will comprise 134 rooms over 7 levels and provide underground parking for 135 cars. It is up to us to show our support and make this happen. IS ON THE MOVE! PLACEMAKING

AESTHETICS VERSES COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT - By Gabby Bowles -

Claudine Khoury Photography

Until recently, I had generally associated the term PLACEMAKING with the ‘tarting-up’ of a dingy public space in an attempt to fix it. Dull corners within a city given a make over to create a more vibrant space in the hope it would engage people and activate a problem area. Warm and fuzzy as that idea was, I was cynical in believing that improving public spaces was as simple as a coat of paint or some public art. Last week I was fortunate enough to attend a presentation by experienced and global ‘PLACEMAKER’ Ethan Kent, the vice president of Project for Public Spaces. Ethan’s presentation covered a number of facets of good Placemaking, from governance aspects to community contributions to private enterprise involvement. This really got me thinking about Gosford and some of our Placemaking to date.

IGUANAS NOW OPEN IGUANA Joe’s at Gosford reopened their doors on September 14 as a tapas bar and function centre - and with a new name. The iconic bar and restaurant was sold in 2009 and has remained empty and idle ever since. Owner Paul Saad has announced the bar will reopen under the guidance of Jason Khoury who has bought the business and renamed it Three Ways Tapas Bar at Iguana Wharf. The former bar area has been transformed and renovated with timber flooring, an elegant cocktail bar and a massive wood fire pizza oven. Two other areas will be known as The Quarters and available for functions and corporate events. Mr Khoury and his wife Amanda have spent several years cleaning up the site, renovating and sourcing top staff including the pizza chef from Hugos pizza bars at Kings Cross and Bondi. “We will have a full English and Spanish tapas bar which Gosford really needs,” Mr Khoury said.

The idea is that Placemaking, is more than just the aesthetics and physical elements around us. We have had a few projects over the years which that haven’t quite hit the mark in regards to Placemaking, despite a huge amount of effort from those involved. But I believe this is changing! I am interested how things may have turned out differently if we turned the design process on its head and designed based on community desire in the way of outcomes (what we want from a public space), rather than a focus on tangible or aesthetic elements? We need to ask the questions like; Would the community like entertainment? An ‘Entertaining’ space. Would the community like to relax? A ‘Relaxing’ space. Would the community like activity? An ‘Active’ space. For a space to be designed primarily to meet visual objectives can be quite challenging but is certainly doable, however, there is a strong need for us to reconsider designing spaces around the idea of community outcomes in order to engage the wider community. This is where community buy-in (the commitment of stakeholders to decision making) becomes important. There is plenty of evidence to support that when a community achieves buy-in, great and wonderful things are possible. I think we are starting to see that in our city now. We are in the act of a massive Placemaking project and most of us don’t even know it. Most of us will always have an opinion of what we like (or don’t like) visually, but the very fact that more and more of us within the community have become committed to creating a space that ‘FEELS’ better, means we now have the ability to make that happen. With so much development and progress proposed for our City this is not a time to become complacent or negative but to actively ‘buyin’ in become part of the project. Great spaces make you feel something positive. That is why they become special to us. So consider your ‘Outcomes’ for Gosford and please share #Great4Gosford on Twitter and post to Gosford City Magazine or Councilor Gabby Bowles on Facebook. SEASONS FOR GROWTH®

COURAGE & SACRIFICE Remembering the Fallen

Each year, the 29th September holds a special significance for Police throughout Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Samoa and the Solomon Islands. It is a day for police to pause to honour officers whose lives have been cut short while performing their duty as a police officer. This important day is also a time to remember police officers who have lost their lives through illness or other circumstances. Every September 29 we pause and honour the lives and the memory of many very fine men and women – indeed over 250 in all, each members of the New South Wales Police Force, each of whom in selflessly dedicating their service to the people of New South Wales, lost their lives in the execution of their official duty. Significantly, we also come together to commemorate their invaluable dedication and commitment, their unquestioned devotion to duty, their unstinting loyalty

and, most importantly, the ultimate sacrifice that they each made in serving our community – and last but by no means least, to pray for them. Our late police officer colleagues lived to make a difference in this great State of New South Wales and they sadly, died as they lived – defending our way of life and safeguarding the peace. The time and place of their passing separate us from them. What strongly unites these police colleagues of yesterday and those of today is, of course, our common bond, namely our solemn Oath of Office as a police officer.

Innov8Central Music Chairman David Bacon said, “We are thrilled to see The Coast Sessions on shelves and are excited to have created an album showcasing the local talent we have here, or that has come from the Coast. “The album, which was officially launched on Saturday 12 July at Lizotte’s, went off with a bang. With eleven of the 16 up and coming artists who won a spot to feature on the album performing. It was truly amazing to see and hear the variety and depth of talent of the artists appearing on the album,” continued David. “Given The Coast Sessions initiative is all about cultivating and supporting original music in our region, it was humbling to see the enthusiastic welcome the artists received at the launch as they took to the stage”. Local Scottish cultural enthusiast Douglas McFarland declares that the City of Gosford Pipe Band will march down Mann St once again, calling for the reformation of the Gosford City Pipe Band. The reformation of the Gosford City Pipe Band is being led by the late John McFarland’s son Douglas McFarland, a local Scottish cultural enthusiast who also runs his family business in Gosford McFarland’s Down Under the Kilt. “Pipe Bands increase cultural activity, they are an excellent outlet for youth looking for an activity with stability, excitement, challenges an opportunities. Involvement in a pipe band is a cultural and musical education unit that transforms traditional music into popular works comprised of pipers, bass drummers and snare drummers. Love

for all seasons If there are seasons to fall in love, for me it is Spring and Summer. It’s all about hot beach holidays and watermelon; social celebrations and champagne; music and mangoes. It is the season of sensual pleasures. It is easy to feel the love in summer – the days are longer and warmer and people are much more social. It is also a time of dreaming as the year draws to a close and we begin to think expansively about the future unfolding, about what we want for work, study, play ….and love…for the next year ahead. And it is no surprise this is the wedding season too! I fell in love with my husband over one magic summer. We still refer to it as our summer of love. Falling in love is the most amazing thing, isn’t it? That rush of infatuation and giddy pleasure. It is a magic bubble but one that inevitably has to pop. Just as Summer makes way for Autumn, so too the ‘falling in love’ phase is replaced by the growing and deepening of the ‘real love’. Or, there is that other familiar scenario, waking up from the dream, disillusioned, unable to progress to what is required for ‘real loving’ and we ‘fall out of love’, only to repeat the cycle again. There is nothing wrong with that, albeit painful at the time. I do recognise the wisdom in kissing a few frogs before you find your prince. However, without a realistic understanding of the nature of love in relationships, people can find themselves in a chronic cycle of falling in and out of love. Our lives and our loves follow the seasons and experience cycles of creation and growth, birth and blossom, death and rebirth. These are natural rhythms and the ebb and flow of energy and focus. We need to know how to nourish and nurture love; how to allow the space for love

to grow; and how to transition through the changes – for example, to ‘tough out a winter’ – and re-emerge, renewed, stronger and more in love. Our deepest longing in life is to be loved. However, the art of loving and relationships is not something we are consciously taught and, in fact, it is something many people are confused about. We largely behave and act unconsciously in love and relationships. We acquire our understanding of it through modeling our parents and families and through our social and cultural influences and experience. But what if what you learnt wasn’t healthy or safe? Without a doubt the number one cause of most love and relationship pains and dysfunctions is a lack of self-love and selfworth. Our capacity to give and receive love starts with loving ourselves. You can’t give what you don’t have. If you are not feeling loved or lovable, it is hard to love others. This requires self –knowledge and a desire to consciously choose and create what you want. Sometimes love is all around but for lack of being aware, so many people fail to notice its existence. Love is not a thing you acquire, it is not even an emotion; it is a way of being in the world. It is always available to you. Make this your summer of love. Open your heart, mind and senses to love. Love is experienced through words, touch, sights and sounds, tastes and smells, actions and thoughts. Be love, do love, see love, think love and say love. Enjoy the summer warmth; feel the salt and sand on your body; eat summer fruits; dance to the summer sounds; smell the flowers, tell yourself and others what you love. Lay the foundation of love this summer to last you through all the seasons. Born and raised on the Central Coast, Trish Davies began working in footwear at the tender age of 15 and has seen all types of feet and comfort needs. Trish began working for the previous owner of Instep Footwear around 25 years ago and purchased the business from him over eight years ago. While Trish has plenty of experience in fitting shoes so does her staff. Each of her team have around 20 years of experience so customers are guaranteed good product knowledge and quality service every time. The store has built a solid reputation based upon quality product and service and these days shoes are not only comfortable but there are so many colours and styles to choose from. “The most important thing is getting the right shoe and the right fit” says Trish. “People just don’t realize the damage they can cause to feet, backs, or

limbs from wearing the wrong shoes.” Trish has seen many changes on the Central Coast over the years. She has played squash and netball extensively, raised two daughters who are now married and have their own businesses locally and is grandmother to 3 beautiful children. Trish believes the most significant change she has seen is the increase in population and housing. She is an avid supporter of Gosford and is excited and optimistic about the city’s future. “The start of the refurbishment works at Imperial Centre is just the beginning” says Trish. “there are so many exciting plans in store for the city and I am just glad to be a part of it.” Instep Footwear is located on the ground floor of Imperial Shopping Centre and it is business as usual throughout the refurbishment period.

BIGSMALL BUSINESS

SPOTLIGHT ON EDGAR & BEVERLY ADAMS In this edition we shine a special light on Edgar and Beverley Adams, founders of Adams Business Publications and perhaps the region’s most enduring power couple. Their prime publication the Central Coast Business Review has undoubtedly been the region’s most assertive voice of business for the last three decades. It would be hard to imagine a significant development in the region that has not been subject to the steely eye and hard hitting editorials of the CCBR. From the regional airport, the stadium, university campuses and schools, local highways, major sub divisions and the NBN all have been shaped by the advocacy and critic of the Adams’ informed views and opinions. Indeed everyone in business and political life on the Central Coast knows of the Central Coast Business Review, particularly it’s influence on regional development and direction. Most public figures open the monthly magazine with a mix of fear and excitement, never quiet sure if they will be praised or clinically torn apart in the famous editorial column. It could be said Edgar and Beverley have an acute smell for a red herring, born out by years of family experience in Australia’s fishing industry. Edgar having managed significant fish import, export, production and retail operations across the country in his early days before they moved to the Central Coast. In 1971 Edgar took on the top accounting job at the Gosford farmers cooperative, which at the time was a hugely significant operation and the region’s largest source of external income. He also did a major stint for the famous Old Sydney Town operation keeping it afloat for several years before he saw the writing on the wall.

20

Gosford City Magazine | October / November 2014

Edgar was a trained accountant, though sees himself primarily as a salesman, confidently acknowledging the fact that Beverley controls the books and has kept their boat afloat over their many years in business together. Beverley says she never saw any point in pulling her punches when it came to managing business or her husbands ambitions and many business ventures. Though it wasn’t until 1990 that they started the Central Coast Business Review, back then as an iconic blue and white masthead. It quickly gained a reputation as an optimistic and honest publication that always had the region’s interests at heart. The CCBR’s editorials didn’t ever shy away from giving local politicians a serve of informed opinion, something that has made adversaries of some powerful figures over the years. No one has however questioned this couple’s motivations and goodwill. This regional goodwill is published each year since 1995 in the Central Coast Business Prospectus. They are always extremely proud of this high gloss, high quality publication that has graced the management desks and boardrooms of investors across the nation and across the world. Perhaps this is what earned both of them seats at the table of influential economic committees and policy groups from both sides of politics. Power brokers of all sorts work out sooner or later to connect with Edgar and Beverley and take on board their long term view and straight shooting advice. Always impeccably dressed, a habit both developed while working from home as a way to delineate their professional and home lives. Now that delineation is more physical, as they took their business address

to the equally well dressed Platinum building in Erina 10 years ago. Yet they both still always look a million dollars and arguably lead the counter offensive to the more typical Central Coast attire. Well known in their local neighbourhood for their active lifestyles Edgar and Beverley can be seen most mornings out for a power walk around Terrigal lagoon or in the gym or on the golf course, Beverley has had a golfing handicap most amateurs would only dream of. The fairways and greens have been Beverley’s cherished pastime, she often cites golf as her salvation from the rigours of business and family life. To many long term friends Edgar and Beverley embody the genuinely generous family spirit that the Central Coast is built on. Both are long term members of Rotary and have been deeply involved in numerous community projects in fields of education, culture and sport. Though it is always family that they come back to, their children and grand children are their pride and joy. They talk warmly of their funny and honest family conversations, a trait that undoubtedly flows through to their approach to business and life. Never ones to stand still, they are now working on expanding their publications’ reach with more innovative new digital offerings. The Central Coast was very fortunate the day that this enduring power couple decided to call the Central Coast home. The region would undoubtedly be immeasurably poorer had they decided to shine their light elsewhere.

SPECSAVERS GOSFORD REVEALS NEW DESIGNER COLLECTIONS AND NEW-LOOK STORE

Specsavers Gosford has welcomed a myriad of new international designers in store including Fineform, Cheap Monday, Quiksilver Tech and Replay. Fineform is the latest, exceptionally light range to join the Ultralight collection, adding to the wide range of premium technical products already available in store. Swedish fashion label, Cheap Monday, has also created a number of edgy styles of glasses, available in store now. Quiksilver Tech, an incredibly durable new range for men and Replay, a range that features on trend styles from the Italian experts in smart casualwear, are additional brands that have joined the store’s designer selection this month. Specsavers Gosford store partners,

Douglas White and Anthony Siviter, who have more than 25 years of optical experience between them, say they are thrilled to offer these top tier designer ranges to their customers. “At Specsavers Gosford, we pride ourselves on providing high quality eyewear that is affordable to everyone. The new ranges are adding to our already impressive designer offerings such as Alex Perry and Collette Dinnigan, and ensuring we have something for everyone” says Douglas. Specsavers Gosford also revealed a freshly re-designed store earlier this year. Anthony says, “Following the renovation we have two optometry rooms fitted out with the most advanced optometry equipment, adding to our five dispense desks for fitting customers with our designer frames. The revamp has been a welcome change to our customers who are reaping the benefits of world class products and equipment.”

Specsavers Gosford has raised more than $1,700 for local charity, Camp Breakaway and The Fred Hollows Foundation through the Specsavers Community Program. The Program donates a portion of all glasses sales to these two charities, out of the store partners’ own pockets. Specsavers Gosford also offers free Digital Retinal Photography with every standard eye exam. Anthony, who is completing a PhD in Macular Research says, “Digital Retinal Photography is a powerful tool that allows me to screen for abnormalities and track changes over time, assisting with the early detection of diseases including diabetes, macular degeneration and glaucoma.” You can come in and see the new designer ranges and the revitalised new Specsavers Gosford at Imperial Shopping Centre, Mann Street or call 02 4325 3444. BIG DATA to BIGGER SALES What can small to medium size businesses do with big data and reporting? For a start, it can boost efficiency and sales. Turn data into insights and make information-driven decisions with Akro’s Powerful Executive reporting suite. Businesses that use data intelligently can do business better. They can improve pricing and just-in-time supply chains. They can find cheaper suppliers that are closer to their location and that offer more price transparency. Businesses can also use data to tailor products and services to individual customers. “Local shopkeepers once knew what their customers liked, right down to color, size and taste,”. “Big data is bringing back personalised service by giving businesses greater insight into consumer preferences, many times without even talking to them, because customers leave digital footprints when they use the Internet, use a credit card, post on Facebook or Google AdWords.” Large corporations regularly use big data to get insight on consumer behavior, target their marketing and boost revenue. But small to medium businesses typically do little with big data. Until now, most owners have considered it too difficult, too expensive and just plain intimidating. There is now an array of technologies that give small and medium businesses access to cost-effective, sophisticated data analytics. Akro provides a hosted or on site data analytics platform with reporting and dashboards, ready for the mobile world. Our solutions allow your business to fully integrate into the one platform whilst maintaining full ownership of your data. SPRING CLEAN YOUR MARKETING

PURP OSE = SUCC ESS Majo rK

Busin eys in Alan ess With Strud wick

Most companies spend a lot of time creating and developing ‘Vision’ and ‘Mission’ statements. Although these are necessary, many miss another major component necessary for success in Business. The Purpose.

- It should be something people know — that fits naturally. -It should answer the question as to who the Business is, and why the Business exists - It should communicate to all staff and customers easily.

Major Companies today all have identified and clear Purpose for their Business.

What to do when you have your Business Purpose

Ikea, Virgin, BMW, Google are just some of the many Companies around the world that have spent the time to develop their Business Purpose in order to achieve success. Purpose impacts success and impacts it ‘with significance’. It goes beyond the ‘balance sheet’. It goes beyond the accumulation of things, titles and accolades. It goes beyond just fulfilling and completing tasks. I believe purpose carries significance. Significance that motivates staff, inspires customers, instils passion, brings back reason for the Business, inspires dreams, changes industries, injects meaning back into your work day. Purpose clarifies your Business priorities. Finding and clarifying the Purpose for your Business can help you to move with greater focus and clarity every day of the life of the Business. It can propel you into achieving success daily rather than waiting until you achieve your vision in the future. Setting clear intentions and developing and refining your Business purpose can make it much easier to navigate towards achieve your Business goals. It is a major key for success.

a). Write your Business Purpose down in strategic places. You want people to be able to ‘see’ it… often b). Communicate to those who are key stakeholders. - Staff - Customers c). Align your Business decisions with your Business Purpose.

I can’t tell you how thrilled I am that winter is finally gone and Spring has sprung. I love spring for so many reasons. I love shaking off the winter blues, I love the warmer weather and sunshine and the feeling of change and renewed motivation that is everywhere! And of course I love a good spring clean, especially a Marketing spring clean… Spring is a great time to revisit your business development and marketing plans you made at the start of 2014. Is it time to declutter? Review what’s working and what’s not. Be honest here, what projects aren’t panning out as you’d hoped? It might be time to trash them and channel your resources into new business development, a new product offering or a new service.

Spring is a time of rebirth. You might be thinking it’s time for a hairstyle change, a spray tan and a new dress. It’s a great excuse to go shopping! Can the same be said for your business marketing? Is it time for a brand refresh? Maybe your website needs a redesign. Spring means change, so think about a new strategy to replace something you eliminated during your declutter. Is it time to finally start your business blog? Every business is different and will require a different marketing spring clean. I highly recommend you speak to a consultant who can help you review your business development and revise your marketing strategy to help you get the most out of your renewed spring time motivation and help you get the best possible start to the new year. Jody Sharpe specialises in Branding & Digital Marketing Strategies for local Small Businesses. For more details, email jody@sharpedesignsolutions.com.au.

d). Create Strategies around your Business Purpose -Strategies are driven by purpose and are well-defined and unwavering Examples of Company Purpose are “To organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful,” Google “To create a better everyday life for the many people.” IKEA “Virgin believes in making a difference.” Virgin Global Group of Companies “To enable people to experience the joy of driving” BMW “A sense of purpose is increasing recognised as essential for business and personal success” … London Business School So what is your Business Purpose going to be?? About Alan

Foundation Truths for identifying After moving back to Australia recently, after 5 years in the USA, Alan has your Business Purpose - It should provide a motivation for all staff. - It should give a reason for what the Business is doing. - It should give a clear direction. - It should confirm the values of the Business.
