Exploring the Outdoor Dining Scene of the ATL Airport District

When it comes to dining, there’s something truly magical about enjoying fantastic food in the open air, especially in vibrant cities like Hapeville, College Park and Union City. Here, outdoor patios beckon diners, offering a unique culinary experience set against the backdrop of bustling city streets and scenic landscapes. As summer heats up the atmosphere and fall unfurls its colors, these District cities come alive with outdoor dining options for every palate.

College Park

Nestled within the Historic Downtown College Park District, Main Street boasts a diverse selection of eateries that tantalize taste buds and capture hearts. College Park established a restaurant row parklet with nearly 100 feet of parking converted into patio style dining. Restaurants like The Real Milk & Honey, Virgil’s Gullah and Johnny’s Famous Chicken & Waffles beckon patrons with their inviting outdoor streetside dining setups.

The Real Milk and Honey elevates brunch to an elegant affair with its refined ambiance and delectable menu offerings. Johnny’s Famous Chicken and Waffles-owned by recording artist & producer Ne-Yo and wife Crystal-serves sweet and savory variations of chicken and waffles. For

those craving a taste of Gullah Geechee cultural cuisine, Virgil’s Gullah Kitchen delivers a vibrant array of flavors that transport diners to the Lowcountry.

Located within walking distance of the College Park MARTA Station, these dining establishments keep their doors open well into the evening, inviting patrons to indulge in signature cocktails that perfectly complement their culinary creations.

The Brake Pad, with its nostalgic 1950’s mechanic station decor, offers a diner-style menu reminiscent of soda fountains and jukebox jams, solidifying its classic staple in the community by being one of the first in the Atlanta Airport District to have outdoor dining. Don’t forget The Breakfast Boys, who may not serve dinner but certainly make up for it with their extensive breakfast and brunch menu in an elegant indoor or outdoor venue available daily until 4pm.

Just a stone’s throw away from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, Virginia Ave offers a worldly array of cultural cuisines: Bole Ethiopian serves up authentic Ethiopian delicacies, while La Fiesta Mexican transports diners to the beaches of Cabo with its tantalizing array of tacos, enchiladas and fajitas.

10 ATL - Your Guide to Atlanta and the Airport Area

The Manchester Arms (family owned and newly reopened) is a beloved neighborhood treasure, offering British pub-style fare Mon-Fri.

For those craving southern classics served in an upscale setting, Party of 5 and Buttermilk Biscuit in Virginia Station Shopping Center are the go-to spots. With outdoor patios inviting guests to bask in the summer sun or gaze upon the moon and stars, these establishments provide the perfect backdrop for indulging in beloved comfort foods, romantic dates or a girls’ night out. Coffee connoisseurs and those who appreciate a good cup of joe, try Drip Thru Coffee Shop. With no indoor dining options, this quaint coffee shop focuses solely on drive-up service but you are welcome to just sit in your car or sit under the umbrellas, savoring the flavors and aromas of your fresh drip coffee while people or plane watching. Whether you prefer a classic latte, chai, macchiato or espresso, Drip Thru Coffee Shop has something to satisfy every caffeine craving.

Hapeville

Next to the world’s busiest airport, Hapeville beckons travelers and locals alike to embark on a culinary journey like no other. With a plethora of outdoor dining establishments to choose from, including JPresso, Coffee Man, Café Belli and more, this vibrant city offers the perfect respite for those facing flight delays or simply seeking to indulge in delicious fare while getting a dose of Vitamin D.

Continued on page 14

Hapeville’s Dwarf House/Chick-fil-A is the original Dwarf House, giving you that Chick-Fil-A Boneless Chicken Sandwich in a nostalgically decorated 1950’s diner atmosphere. Newly renovated with modern touches like a kid’s outdoor playground and two-lane drive thru options, you can dine outdoors in the museum style original footprint of the 1946 restaurant, have fun finding all the hidden dwarves or take a picture sitting on the bench with the statue of Truett Cathy. Chick-fil-A’s Catering on Virginia Avenue is happy to cater your next get-together with curbside carry-out or delivery.

For those craving cultural comfort foods, establishments like Sombreros, Tia Rosie’s Kitchen, Junior’s Pizza, Dua Vietnamese, Don Chon Mexican & Johnny’s Pizza deliver mouthwatering dishes inspired by Mexico, Italy and Vietnam. For an elegant 5-star dining experience, there’s Volare Wine & Bistro. Try Jake’s Ice Cream, a beloved local spot serving up sweet treats or Corner Tavern that offers wings, sandwiches, salads & more with classic cocktails, wine or beer.

For those looking to imbibe in handcrafted cocktails and gourmet bites, the Kimpton Overland Hotel Rooftop Bar and Paper Plane offer perfect settings for indulging in culinary delights while taking in panoramic views of the city skyline. Visit Hammer’s Goodtime Emporium-order a taco, nachos, a burger or BLT and play beach volleyball with friends.

Situated 20-minutes from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, Union City is a hidden culinary gem waiting to be discovered. At the Green Manor Southern Buffet, diners can

Cookie Smoak – A Pioneer in the Tourism Industry

Hail and farewell to our partner, mentor and friend Cookie Smoak. She is retiring after 11 years from her position as President of the ATL Airport District-a Destination Marketing Organization for College Park, Hapeville, Union City and the area around Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

Prior to her time with ATL Airport District (ATLD), Cookie worked for Delta Air Lines, Orlando CVB (Convention and Visitors Bureau) and the Atlanta CVB. She has been a driving force in destination marketing and the hospitality & tourism industries for many years.

One of Cookie’s most important achievements is the creation of our magazine: while working in Atlanta, Cookie and our other mentor and fellow publisher, Charlie Nelson, came up with the idea of publishing a magazine dedicated to the area surrounding the airport. This idea, drawn out on a napkin, became the Atlanta Airport Area Meeting Planner and Visitor’s Guide (the Guide-Atlanta Airport Area). The name has changed but we are proud to the “brain child” of these two avantgarde thinkers and industry leaders who have dedicated their lives to helping others.

During her tenure at ATLD, she and her team have accomplished so much: generating millions of dollars in revenue and working closely with economic

development directors to attract visitors, increase local business and keep hotel occupancy rates high.

She and her team have launched several programs: an annual cycling event called Spin The District which is the second-largest cycling event in Georgia, an award-winning webpage that allows visitors and meeting planners to explore the many options available to enjoy in the District, a volunteer program called NAVigators (Neighbors Assisting Visitors) where volunteers at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, area hotels and at the GICC (Georgia International Convention Center) welcome visitors to the area and developing marketing programs for the three cities ATLD represents.

Cookie has been honored by the tourism industry through the years. She was the first woman in the tourism industry to be selected as one of Atlanta Magazine’s Women Making a Mark award, given The Georgia CVB’s Larry Allen Tourism Award and she was recognized as a leader in Georgia Trend’s 500 list in 2023.

Cookie-we will miss you greatly but we wish you all the best in your future endeavors. Your knowledge, leadership, outgoing personality, and desire to make the ATL Airport District successful will impact us for many years to come.

ATL District-Your Ultimate Fun Destination

Want to have fun in the sun? ATL Airport District has it all. From summer to fall, ATL District cities are brimming with outdoor wonders. For families seeking an escape from the ordinary, the District and its surrounding communities offer a cornucopia of activities and events, transforming every season into an opportunity for discovery, bonding and fun.

With school schedules temporarily on hold, kids eagerly anticipate days filled with outdoor play, picnics in the park and adventures with friends. Parents, too, relish the opportunity to reconnect with their little ones, creating cherished memories that will last a lifetime. ATL District has a plethora of youth recreational sports leagues available in each community: leagues that not only provide children with a chance to stay active and healthy but also teach invaluable lessons about teamwork, discipline and sportsmanship. They have a choice to participate in baseball, football, basketball, gymnastics, dance, cheerleading, soccer and more. Certain recreational organizations will still allow you to sign up even if you do not live in that city. Cities also offer summer fun camps for kidscheck with your local recreation department for more information.

The fun doesn’t stop with the kids – adults can get

in on the action too. Adults may join a local recreation department’s sports teams for basketball, softball or kickball. Cities have classes for adults like line dancing, fitness training, arts & crafts, aerobics, yoga and more.

Adults and kids can attend live events like WNBA games at the Gateway Arena or the Cricket MEAC/SWAC Challenge Kick-Off at Center Parc Credit Union Stadium. Music concerts and other special group events, conferences and trade shows are always happening at the Georgia International Convention Center and Gateway Arena. Areas surrounding the airport are filled with outdoor fun and leisure activities: arts festivals, walking/hiking, biking, family reunions, weddings, parties and more. Golf enthusiasts have Historic College Park Golf Course, Browns Mill and Wolf Creek courses. Bicycle racing events or a family bike ride along local trails are always fun. Communities offer water activities at a splash pad or fun at local pools-you can even sign up for swimming lessons. There’s no shortage of ways for everyone to stay active and engaged.

From outdoor concerts, parades, races and festivals to movie nights under the stars, there’s something for everyone to enjoy as the days grow longer and the nights grow warmer.

biking trails is located at the Ronald Bridges Park. Feel free to play a casual game with friends or join a team. Music concerts, National Night Out, September Fall Festival and other activities are on the city’s schedule so check out their website for more details.

As we move into fall and beyond, some cities have Veterans Day ceremonies to honor those who served our country in the armed forces. Many cities have National Night Out, Halloween activities, Thanksgiving celebrations and then it’s time for festive December holiday traditions like lighting of a Christmas tree, parades, Kwanza festivals and other fun-filled activities.

In the ATL Airport District, the possibilities for family fun and outdoor adventures are endless. So pack your bags, lace up your sneakers, and get ready to make unforgettable memories right here with family and friends.
