OFFENSE: If ever there is a season for LSU to take
a step back, it will be 2013. Senior quarterback Zach Mettenberger has been inconsistent over the course of his career, at times he has been remarkable, and at other times he is merely average. With Jeremy Hill possibly sidelined for legal issues, the ball carrying duties will fall to senior Alfred Blue. Blue suffered a season ending knee injury last year, and while he has maintained that he is 100%, the staff may try to bring him along slowly. Also splitting time at running back will be Kenny Hilliard. Sophomore receiver Jarvis Landry will be a big piece of this offense in 2013. Landry brings some attitude to this team and is fearless no matter who he is facing. Opposite Landry will be the agile Odell Beckham Jr. The offensive line is a wild card heading into this season. This line will need to find some cohesiveness in practice in order to keep Mettenberger upright.
DEFENSE: Coming into 2013, the LSU defense
must replace 7 starters. Losing such stars as Sam Montgomery and Barkevious Mingo will put the Tigers in a tough spot defensively but there are plenty of athletes on the roster to help soften the blow. Defensive tackle Anthony Johnson had a 30 tackle season last year and recorded 10 tackles for a loss while seeing less time and having a bit of a down season. The linebackers will have plenty of competition as individual positioning within the linebackers does not seem to matter to the coaches, the best athlete will play. Junior Lamin Barrow had a very good season for the Tigers last year in which he posted 104 tackles. The defensive backfield is a little more solidified. After taking his lumps as a freshman, Jalen Mills will start for the Tigers at corner after earning freshman All-American honors last season. One of the few returning starters will be senior safety Craig Loston. 2013 SCHEDULE Aug 31 @TCU* Sep 7 UAB Sep 14 Kent St. Sep 21 Auburn Sep 28 @Georgia Oct 5 @Mississippi St. Oct 12 Florida Oct 19 @Ole Miss Oct 26 Furman Nov 9 @Alabama Nov 23 Texas A&M Nov 29 Arkansas
NEWCOMERS DT Maquedius Bain, Bain has a tremendous amount of athleticism for a defensive tackle. CB Jaryl Brazil, Brazil runs a blazing 4.32 40 and will be able to match even the best SEC receiver’s speed. QB Anthony Jennings, Jennings, a duel-threat quarterback, will compete for time immediately and has tremendous upside.
