Young architectural practice New Town Studio has been shortlisted for the Pylon Design Competition. The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) and National Grid challenged architects, engineers, designers and students to re-think one of the most iconic features of the British landscape: the electricity pylon, when it announced the competition in May 2011. Proposals were invited to develop a new pylon design to meet the UK’s future energy needs with the potential to deliver for generations to come, whilst balancing community needs and preserving the beauty of our countryside. One of six to be chosen from over 250 entries in the anonymous competition, New Town Studio’s design is revealed alongside other shortlisted proposals at a new exhibition at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. Inspired by the existing lattice pylon originally designed by Sir Reginald Blomfield RA in 1927, New Town Studio’s Totem also uses a lattice steel framework to create a vertical structure which retains the transparent and open qualities of the original in a more modest form to be visually and symbolically appropriate for today. The cylindrical tower is slimmer, lighter and more economical in its use of materials, occupying less than 1/3 of the footprint of the existing pylon. Vertical insulators have been removed from the pylon‘arms’ resulting in a more elegant and compact profile. Featuring a modular lattice design that employs large members at the base, where forces are greater, Totem becomes increasingly light and open as it rises to its apex and most visible point.

New accessible beach huts designed by a:b:i:r architects and Peter Lewis will be unveiled later this month in Boscombe (Bournemouth) as the UK’s first designed specifically for people with disabilities. ‘The Seagull and the Windbreak’, which draws upon traditional seaside imagery of a line drawn seagull and multi coloured stripes of the traditional windbreak, beat off worldwide competition from 173 international entries. Voted for by the public, disabled beach users and a panel of seven expert judges, the buildings combine ergonomics with contemporary design. Funded with a grant from the Commission for Architecture & Built Environment (CABE) the Boscombe beach huts are designed to promote inclusion, health and wellbeing. Facilities include high colour contrast surfaces and flooring to assist the visually impaired, dual height kitchen units with a gas stove and a communal outside area with a fresh water fountain. An electric charging point for mobility scooters is also available as well as improved accessible toilets, parking and a wooden beach trackway to enable easy access onto the beach. The four huts, designed as two pairs with retractable partition walls for increased flexibility, each accommodate up to four wheelchair users.

A class of thirty, year five children from Barley Mow Primary school, Gateshead, have been given the chance to construct a scale model of their new school with the help of TPS, the design and engineering consultancy responsible for the project’s delivery. TPS (part of Carillion plc) completed the design and delivery of Barley Mow Primary School in Birtley; the first new project of the Primary Capital Programme for South Tyneside & Gateshead (STaG). The new school facilities replace the existing Barley Mow Primary School that stood on the same site. As the existing school has a strong and established community presence, the design process involved three months of engagement meetings with the school and its stakeholders before a design was finalised and submitted for planning. This engagement process used a rich array of presentation techniques to explain the design concepts and proposals, including sketches, artistic impressions and computer generated visuals. In addition physical card models were used to initially describe spaces and then ultimately to explain the form of the building. TPS took the opportunity to not only overcome the school’s desire for a model but also capture a valuable way to involve the children, by offering them the chance build a 1:75 model of their own new school.
TPS were initially appointed by Inspired Spaces to provide Architecture, Interior Design and Mechanical and Engineering Consultancy services to the Barley Mow school project. The brief required the design of a new build one form entry primary school for 210 children together with a 26-place Day Nursery. As part of the Inspired Spaces team, TPS made four separate presentations to the local community, consulting at different stages of the design process prior to submitting the planning application. This approach involved the community in the design of the new school and its site, with the views expressed in the sessions influenced the final design.
The day proved to be a huge success with the model taking pride of place initially in the existing school’s reception. TPS’s innovative efforts proved to be a success for Inspired Spaces to such an extent that TPS has now set a precedent amongst the Primary Capital Programme for STaG for all schemes, including those by other consultants.

It is big enough to house more than 100 double-decker buses and spans 35,000 square feet over four floors. Reported to offer shoppers a ‘retail-tainment’ experience, features include giant statues of the M&M’s characters, interactive screens inside a 1960’s London Bus and a multi-coloured wall of chocolate. Meopham based firm AEM Demolition undertook the heavyside building works for the US high-end retail construction specialist and main contractor McKenzie Keck. AEM needed reliable, durable and easy access to the building’s under-floor services and they chose 5000 Series floor access panels from Howe Green, the industry’s leading supplier of quality access solutions. Under the Construction, Design and Management Regulations 2007, in the event of a building fire, and any deaths caused, a court of law will want to know how fire protection systems were selected and whether there was adequate liaison between all the parties involved in making sure that the protection was appropriate.

Classification Reports supplied by treatment companies therefore must be species specific and reports that include generic terms such as ‘softwood’ and ‘plywood’ should be seriously questioned.’
Timber is our most versatile construction material and its upgrading by fire retardant treatments allows it to be used safely in a wide range of applications. These treatments must now meet the requirements of either Euroclass B or C of the new European Standard EN 13501-1 to comply with both national Building Standards and the Constructive Products Directive. But how can you be sure that your fire retardant treated timbers are fully compliant? By using suppliers that have independent species specific Classification Reports.
Andrew Hughes, Technical Director for Arch Timber Protection and Chairman of the UK Wood Protection Association (WPA) fire retardant committee commented: ‘A first step for any specification of fire retardant treated timbers should be a reference to the WPA check list which gives general guidance. However, independent and species specific Classification Reports are a must to give real peace of mind. These should cover four particular requirements: the timber species; the thickness of the timber; whether there will be an air gap behind the timber; and the nature of any backing materials. It is a duty of care for both specifiers and building control officers to demand this proof.’
Some fire retardant treatments are being promoted using non-specific reports. This means that testing has only been undertaken on the basis of generic references and this may not always ensure an effective performance once specific timber species, component designs and end uses are taken into account.

When existing warm air heaters come to the end of their useful life, staying with the same technology can offer major advantages. Modern air heaters are more efficient, run more quietly and, can be fitted with an electronic filtration system. Quick and easy to install, replacing an old warm air heater with a new one, can normally be undertaken within one day. New Standesse From JS Air Curtains JS Air Curtains is launching the new Standesse air curtain with energy saving wire rapid-heat elements and an attractive modern design. The Standesse is available in four 0.5m lengths from 1m to 2.5m and has a powerful output of up to 6,300m³/h, making the air curtain ideal for protecting doorways up to 3.5m high. Consarc architects won the competition to design the iCon Innovation Centre in Daventry with an exciting proposal for a building that would embody not only the highest standards of aesthetics and human-friendly design, but also optimum sustainability. DuPont™ Energain®, the pioneering phase change material from a global leader in forward thinking, helped to enable these goals by adding lightweight, high-tech thermal mass. The 4000m2 iCon building is a BREEAM Excellent project which uses less than 15 Kg of CO2/m2/yr and showcases the feasibility of achieving zero carbon status via sustainable design and construction techniques and the integration of renewable energy technologies. A timber frame construction, the building also features a responsive showcase façade made from sustainable timber and an Ethylene Tetra Flouro Ethylene (ETFE) foil covered atrium. As advanced as such methods and materials are, however, the construction of such lightweight buildings can also result in the problem of low-inertia and excessive heat gains due to a lack of thermal mass. This makes it difficult to efficiently control rapid temperature variations without expensive cooling and heating systems and thereby creates problems for both energy consumption and interior comfort, especially during hot weather. DuPont™ Energain® is an advanced phase change system which exploits a high-tech compound – and a helpful calculation model – to address these crucial issues. The system is supplied in easy-to-install panels of 1.0m x 1.2m x 5.26mm thickness which are sealed behind the plasterboard in walls or above ceiling panels, using standard tools and working practices. DuPont™ Energain® works by absorbing ambient heat as room temperature rises (at around 22°C), storing it until the temperature drops again (at around 18°C), and then releasing it back into the room. In ventilated structures this can make a significant difference to comfort and also to the choice of construction methods and materials. In buildings with airconditioning DuPont™ Energain® can reduce costs by an average of 35% and help to reduce heating bills in the winter by up to 15%. Comparing DuPont™ Energain® with traditional thermal mass solutions such as concrete, material analysis of equal volume has shown that concrete offers only approximately 17% of the energy capacity offered by DuPont™ Energain® in the temperature window of 18-24°C for a 5 mm panel. While traditional mass contributes only to stabilising room climate, DuPont™ Energain® can help to also improve the energy efficiency of the building thanks to its heat storage and release capacity. The Rose Bowl, in Hampshire, is being transformed into one of the best international cricket and leisure venues in the World, thanks to a £45 million development, including the application of a Levolux Solar Shading solution. Levolux was invited to develop a bespoke Solar Shading solution for the two new grandstands, comprising 180mm wide by 30mm thick Timber Fins, engineered from Western Red Cedar timber with no surface treatment. Arranged horizontally, the Timber Fins are applied to south-facing elevations of the two new grandstands. The Timber Fins not only create a naturally impressive aesthetic, obscuring the view of unsightly structures, but also provide shade to stairways, service areas and first floor windows. www.levolux.com
Elmgrove House in London has been redeveloped to provide 119 affordable homes. Featuring cladding as an integral part of the development’s aesthetic, a secret fixing method was needed to provide a seamless finish free from the visible clutter of mechanical fixings. For this, specifiers turned to SikaTack Panel Adhesive from Sika. The striking concrete structure incorporates a 12 storey tower, clad in coloured panels, on top of a 6 storey timberclad plinth. With the installation of fully integrated rainscreen cladding – utilising the SikaTack secret fix system – the building achieved the required modern aesthetic. The plinth is clad in ’Harmony Oak’ High Pressure Laminate. Fixed to a lightweight, aluminium façade support system designed by Eurofox Engineering for use with Sika Tack Panel Adhesive. Sika Concrete Admixtures In The Mix At Power Station Sika worked closely with Hanson Concrete to supply 25,000 cubic metres of high workability concrete to the new £450 million natural gas Severn Power station that has recently been built at the mouth of the River Usk, near Newport in Gwent. As a high percentage of the concrete was pumped into place during construction of the project, a good quality mix design was essential so that the concrete would retain a high consistence and strength without segregation. For this reason Sika® ViscoCrete® 20RM liquid admixture was incorporated in the mix design. This unique product gives the advantage of high water reduction with correspondingly high strength and density, coupled with extended workability, improved flow, reduced shrinkage and fast strength development.
