SCHULTZ

Thad Schultz is in his fourth season as an assistant coach for the Penn State swimming and diving program. A standout swimmer at West Virginia, Schultz’s vast knowledge base spans the club, NCAA and national range. A 22-year coaching veteran, Schultz spent time coaching on the college scene at Clemson and Ohio State before joining the Blue and White for the 2009-10 campaign. During his time in Happy Valley, Schultz has seen the Nittany Lions women’s team finish among the top-40 twice and the men’s squad has grabbed top-30 finishes each of the past two seasons at the national meet. On an individual level, at least one Nittany Lion has advanced to the NCAA Championships each year and 15 of his pupils have garnered All-America honors on 45 occasions. Prior to arriving in Happy Valley, Schultz served as assistant coach and senior division leader at SwimMac, one of the nation’s top club programs, in Charlotte, N.C. During his time with SwimMAC, he performed a variety of tasks while working with the Age-Group swim program consisting of over 750 swimmers. During his time in Charlotte, N.C., he coached a number of national qualifiers and worked with three members of the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team and four competitors from the 2004 U.S. Olympic squad. Prior to starting at SwimMac in 2007, he served as Aquatics Director and head coach at Brunswick YMCA in Brunswick, Ga. He oversaw nearly every aspect of a swim program that featured over 50 swimmers. Schultz’s extensive swimming experience includes collegiate coaching stops at Ohio State (2000-02) and Clemson (1998). With the Buckeyes, he served as an assistant coach, specifically with the men’s program, and helped four swimmers reach the NCAA Championships, three break school records and eight earn Academic AllAmerica accolades. On the recruiting front, Schultz helped sign 15 High School All-America honorees while in Columbus. His collegiate coaching experience began in 1998 when he was an assistant coach at Clemson University. Working with the men’s and women’s swim programs, he helped lead to eight Tigers to the NCAA Championships, two earn ACC records, 10 break school records and eight earn Academic All-America status. His recruiting prowess also helped the Tigers bring in 22 newcomers that earned High School All-America laurels. As a collegiate swimmer, Schultz was one of the top performers while at West Virginia. He competed in freestyle, backstroke and IM events, while sitting atop the record books in two individual events and one relay. Schultz held the school record in the 100 backstroke and 200 IM, along with being a part of the school record setting 200 freestyle relay team. He also ranked among the top-five in the 400 medley relay, 400 freestyle relays, the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle.

WORKMAN

Aaron Workman joined the Nittany Lion staff in 2010-11 and enters his third season on the deck. Workman comes from an established coaching background, including his most recent position stop as the recruiting coordinator at the University of Pittsburgh, and was a decorated student-athlete in the pool while at the University of Kentucky. During his first two seasons in Happy Valley, Workman has watched as 14 of his pupils earned All-America honors in the pool on 44 occasions. He helped the men’s squad to a No. 17 showing at the NCAA Championships last year and a No. 26 finish during his first season on campus. The women’s squad has posted a pair of top-35 finishes, as well, grabbing the No. 22 spot in 2011-12 and the No. 25 spot in 2010-11. On the recruiting trail, Workman was has also been able to sign top-18 recruiting classes in each of the past two years. During his time at Pittsburgh, Workman was in charge of assisting the head coach in all aspects of team preparation. His duties included designing and implementing practice and weight training plans. As the recruiting coordinator, he was able to sign one top-25 and one honorable mention class for the Panthers. Workman was also involved with Team Pittsburgh Aquatics during his time in the Steel City. While there, Workman organized all aspects of one of the largest meets for Allegheny Mountain Swimming and developed practice agendas for the competitors. Before working at Pittsburgh, Workman held the same duties as assistant swim coach and recruiting coordinator at UNLV from 2005-07. He helped coach his team to three straight Mountain West Conference championships while also recruiting the 18th-best men’s class in the country. Not only did his teams have a great athletic track record, but they also excelled out of the pool, consistently ranking in the top-20 academically in the nation. His collegiate coaching ventures started when he assumed the head swimming and diving coach role at Hollins University from 2002-03 and continued the next season when he was named the assistant coach at Wittenberg University, holding that post during the 2003-04 campaign. At Wittenberg, Workman coached a pair of NCAA All-America honorees and a top-20 Division III team. A four-year letterman at the University of Kentucky, Workman earned All-America accolades four times, was named to the academic All-SEC performer during each of his seasons on campus and was an academic All-America pick in 2001. The freestyle sprinter helped Kentucky to four consecutive top-20 finishes at the NCAA Championships, including a 17th place finish in 2001 when he earned All-America honors in four relay events. Workman also competed in the 2000 U.S. Olympic Trials. Workman earned his bachelor of science degree in broadcasting from Kentucky in 2001. He is married to former Kentucky AllAmerican swimmer Jaime Siegele. The couple resides in State College, Pa. with their two children, Molly (5) and Macon (2).
