e F. Joseph Bedenk Award is presented each year to the most valuable member of the Penn State baseball team. It is given in memory of the Nittany Lions’ legendary coach, Joe Bedenk, who guided Penn State from 1931-62 and is the all-time leader in wins for Penn State coaches with 380. e 2009 winner was freshman third baseman Jordan Steranka. He led the Nittany Lions in most every offensive category, including the team’s “triple crown” of average (.365), home runs (6) and RBI (42). ED DRAPCHO AWARD

e Ed Drapcho Award is named after Ed Drapcho, a former Penn State All-American pitcher from 1955 to 1957. Drapcho still holds several school records to this day, including career wins and complete games, season wins, complete games and winning percentage and strikeouts in a single game. e award is given annually to the most improved player on the team. e 2009 winner was catcher Ben Heath. Along with success at the plate, he came into his own with the pitching staff and became a dependable signal-caller. SHORTY STONER AWARD

e Charles Medlar Award is named after Charles “Chuck” Medlar, whom Penn State’s home stadium Medlar Field at Lubrano Park is also named after. Medlar was Penn State’s head coach from 19631981 and ranks third all-time at Penn State in coaching wins with 312. He also led the Nittany Lions to a pair of College World Series. e award is presented each year to the outstanding pitcher on the Penn State team. e winner was starting pitcher T.J. Macy, who put forth an impressive final season in Happy Valley. He finished with a teamleading 4.95 ERA among pitchers with at least 10 starts. Macy finished the season fifth in the Big Ten with 91 strikeouts, which is also good for eighth in Penn State single-season history. He also held batters to a .263 batting average ninth-best in the conference. e Shorty Stoner Award recognizes outstanding academic achievement by a member of the Penn State baseball team and is presented annually to the player with the highest grade point average on the team. e award is named after Shorty Stoner, who coached Penn State from 1982-1990 and is fourth all-time in wins by a Nittany Lion head coach. Stoner also played for Penn State from 1965-67. e 2009 winner was pitcher Paul Cianciolo.
