BILL JEFFREY 1926-1952 Career Record: 153-24-29
e Lions’ 10th and all-time winningest coach in Penn State men’s soccer history boasting a total of 254 victories, three Big Ten Conference Championships, two Atlantic 10 Conference Championships, and three NSCAA Regional Coach of the Year awards. Gorman has coached seven All-America selections, five Soccer America Freshman All-America team members, one Olympian, and 31 All-Region honorees. He has taken his teams on five overseas playing tours during his tenure: England/Ireland, Germany, Holland, and Brazil (twice).
Penn State’s sixth head coach, Jeffrey is Penn State’s all-time coaching leader by percentage and possesses the program’s longest coaching tenure at over a quarter of a century. His teams outscored their opponents 689184 and captured seven ISFA championships. His 1933 team posted Penn State’s first perfect season, amassing a 6-0-0 record. Jeffrey led the first U.S. soccer contingent to travel abroad.
WALTER BAHR 1974-1987 Career Record: 185-66-22 During his distinguished career, Bahr led Penn State to 12 NCAA Championship appearances and to an Atlantic 10 Conference Championship. He was named Regional and National Coach of the Year in 1979 and is an NSCAA Hall of Fame inductee. Bahr coached five AllAmerican selections, two Soccer America Freshman All-America honorees, a Hermann Award winner, two Olympians, and 16 All-MidAtlantic Region honorees.
HERB SCHMIDT 1968-1973 Career Record: 38-21-8 Schmidt guided Penn State teams that earned four NCAA Championship field berths in his five year tenure, including the program’s first appearance in an NCAA title game (1970). He coached six All-MidAtlantic Region honorees during his career.
KEN HOSTERMAN 1953-1967 Career Record: 72-60-5 Hosterman owns Penn State’s third longest head coaching tenure. He coached two consecutive ISFA championship teams, three All-America selections, three Olympians, and three All-Mid-Atlantic Region players.

RALPH LEONARD 1924-1925 Career Record: 9-1-1
Over Leonard’s two seasons in leading the progam, the Lions outscored their opponents by an impressive 29-6 margin.
LARRY LONGHURST 1923 Career Record: 4-0-1
Longhurst coached for just one year; a season in which his Lions were unbeaten and scored 20 goals in just five games.
HUGH KEENLEYSIDE 1922 Career Record: 2-0-2
Led the Lions to an undefeated season in his lone year as head coach.
COMPTON PACKENHAM 1921 Career Record: 2-0-1
His 1921 Lions held opponents to just two goals.
JIM CROWELL 1916-1917, 1919-1920 Career Record: 11-0-2
Penn State’s first soccer coach. Unbeaten in his tenure, Crowell’s Lions held the record for highest goal tally in a season (24) until 1927.
