COACHING HISTORY Penn State Athletics has always been synonymous with tradition and winning, and the women’s swimming and diving team is no exception. Since the program’s inception in 1970, the Nittany Lion swimmers have only been led by four head coaches: Ellen Perry, Bob Krimmel, Bill Dorenkott and most recently, John Hargis. Perry, an Associate Athletic Director for women’s sports at Penn State, led the Nittany Lions from 1970-81, and posted an impressive record of 103-26-0. In addition, Perry coached the relay team of Joan Peto, Jan Fischer, Laurie Fedon and Lisa Fedon to an American record on March 1, 1975. Bob Krimmel, affectionately known to his swimmers as “Krim,” took over as head coach of the Nittany Lion program before the 1981-82 season. However, Krimmel was no stranger to the McCoy Natatorium. A former Penn State record-holder in the 100 and 200 freestyle, Krimmel was an assistant for both the Penn State men’s and women’s swimming teams for eight years prior to his appointment as head coach. Under Krimmel’s leadership, the Nittany Lions won three Eastern Women’s Swimming League titles, and finished second five times before diving into Big Ten Conference competition in 1992. Penn State quickly showed the rest of the conference why it is one of the most dominant programs in the East, as the team finished fourth in the Big Ten in only its second year. With Krimmel on deck, Penn State swimmers won seven individual Big Ten titles in seven years, and sent at least one swimmer to the NCAA Championships in 16 out of 17 years. Perhaps more amazing than Krimmel’s swimmers’ athletic accomplishments were their academic accomplishments. e Nittany Lions ranked first in the nation in 1996-97 among all collegiate swimming programs with a cumulative team GPA of 3.335. e Penn State women have garnered Team Academic All-America status for 14 consecutive years, and counting. In Dorenkott’s ten seasons in Happy Valley, the Nittany Lions excelled in the classroom, boasting 45 swimmers Academic All-Americans. He led the team to three Big Ten championships and its three highest-ever finishes at NCAA Championships. Both Perry and Krimmel set an academic and athletic precedent that Dorenkott followed. Hargis, in his first season at the helm of the Nittany Lions, kept up the excellence that is Penn State swimming. He posted an 8-2-1 record, along with continued success in the classroom. Last season, 16 members were named Academic All-Big Ten while four others were named CSCAA Academic All-Americans.
