Want to get the most out of your college experience? Don’t miss out on these UCSC traditions. Tree 9: For years, students have hiked up to the ninth stop on the Seep Zone Interpretive Trail through UCSC’s upper campus to climb the 150-foot Douglas Fir known as Tree 9. Though UCSC arborists removed the first 25 branches of Tree 9 in 2010 in order to eliminate the ability for people to easily climb it and to ensure its longevity—it’s still worth the trip. First Rain Run: This annual run happens during the first major nighttime rainfall of fall quarter. Initiated by Porter College students, the run goes through the colleges in a circular path, picking up students along the way. The best part? Participants are either partially or entirely naked. The run often ends with a drum circle in Porter Meadow or skinny dipping. Just watch out for police. 420 at Porter Meadow: It’s a rite of passage at UCSC to attend the annual 420 celebration at Porter Meadow on April 20. Think huge crowd, music and weed.

With so much to see and do on Cabrillo’s campus, you’ll have a hard time leaving. Take note of these special events happening throughout the 2012-13 school year.

“Black Snow”: presented by Cabrillo Theatre Arts (Nov. 2-18): Based on Mikhail Bulgakov’s novel, “A Dead Man’s Memoir,” this comedic play tells the story of the playwright for the famous Moscow Art Theatre in the 1930s. Jody Alexander: “Preparing for Evanescence” at the Cabrillo Gallery (Nov. 9-Dec. 7): Recent work from Jody Alexander, who recently received the Solo

Drum Circles in Crown Meadow: An opportunity to embrace the hippie lifestyle and let loose.

Exhibition Award for her work in the Cabrillo Gallery exhibition,“California.” 35th Annual Spring Plant Sale at the Environmental Horticulture Center & Botanic Gardens (May): The largest annual college plant sale in Central California. Winter Dance Concert (Nov. 30-Dec. 2): High-energy performances by some of the best dancers around. “A Night at the Nutcracker” presented by Cabrillo Stage (Dec. 1430): ’Tis the season for a musical farce. Cabrillo Stage summer theater season (JulyAugust): Each year, Cabrillo Stage manages to outdo itself with a summer theater season that’s jam-packed with beloved musicals.

Strikes and Protests: It’s a time-honored tradition for UCSC students to band together in support of a cause. Grab a picket sign and stand up for your right to—well, whatever you want.

Aptos Farmers Market (8 a.m.-noon, Saturdays, year-round): This weekly farmers market features a large variety of produce and specialty foods offered by 80 vendors. RR JONES

Shakespeare Santa Cruz: Every summer, theater enthusiasts flock to UCSC to see William Shakespeare’s words come to life onstage. You won’t regret buying tickets.

CARS

If you are a student or faculty member at Cabrillo College or UC Santa Cruz, there are many online options that can help you find a carpool partner. There are national sites like Share Shotgun and iCarpool that work to match riders and drivers. Craigslist is another way to find a carpool partner. There is the Facebook application Zimride, which UCSC recommends for local college students and faculty. The locally based Commute Solutions and Go Green are also full of information on carpooling, bike routes and public transit information. UCSC even offers discounted parking permits for those who carpool. There is also Zipcar, which offers discounts to UCSC students to share the international car-sharing company’s nine cars on campus and eight cars downtown. Finally, for faculty members or those students fortunate enough, there is Zenn Car, the all-electric car that costs around $13,000 after tax rebates. It is perfect for getting around town on zero emissions.

UCSC students with a valid university ID can ride all Metro lines for free. Cabrillo students must buy bus passes directly from Santa Cruz Metropolitan Transit District (scmtd.com). 5 tips for getting a tattoo with Robert Fargo, senior artist at LoveDog Tattoo Research: Find out information about the tattoo parlor that you will be getting your tattoo from. Research their history, reputation, and reviews on the web, or by word of mouth. Portfolio: Before getting a tattoo, look through a portfolio of the tattoo artist’s designs to make sure that the style you want matches the artist’s ability. Communication: Make sure that the artist is someone you can communicate with clearly so that he/she can draw exactly what you’d like. Idea Development: Once you have an idea in mind, print or email it to an artist to make sure he/she can replicate it. Talk about the idea: where to put it on your body, cost, and other such details. Build a Relationship: A tattoo is permanent, so make sure that the person doing the deed is somebody you can trust and communicate with.

THE GREAT OUTDOORS

Welcome to

Surf City Capitola Jetty When the swell is up, a nice left careens in front of the jetty and the right can go on forever, assuming your skag doesn’t hit the kelp-infested water. Also, about a block and a reef away is the infamous Toe’s Over, which needs a huge winter swell and a minus low tide to break. But when it does, it’s pure left- and right-breaking bliss. The Hook Named for the copious amounts of kelp in the lineup that “hooks” around skags and booties, this nice little point break also has a lot of surfers that are “hooked” on the spot. Nevertheless, it’s got a right-facing wave that, if you can maneuver around the flock, is to die for.

Manresa/La Selva Manresa is a mélange of peaks,

54 DILATED PUPIL | 2012– 2013

valleys and sandbars. But a lot of the time the place is epic, breaking left and right and all over the place. Expect a long, grueling paddle during the wintertime to the outside and nil to none summertime surf— unless there’s a south swell.

Pleasure Point This place is generally crowded with everyone from groms to experts, longboarders to ultra thin-glassed rippers. Practice, as always, common courtesy and you should be all right in the outer, best breaks. Privates Longboard paradise. Clean right-facing lines peel off and make for a great ride that will take you all the way into the break known as Trees and into the Capitola Wharf. Well not quite, but the ride is long and the waves are

gentle. Easygoing, without all the soft board hassles of Cowell’s to spoil your wave.

Cowell’s The bunny slope of surfing gets its fair share of beginners but it also has nice sloping waves that go on forever. Easy access and easy attitudes.

Steamer Lane Perhaps the most classic break in the world, Steamer Lane more than lives up to its reputation. With four reef breaks rolled into one spot—The Point, Middle Peak, The Slot and Indicators—the Lane has it all, including ogling tourists. There’s even a surfing museum in the nearby lighthouse.

Natural Bridges When the conditions are just right, like an 8-foot west swell, this

From beginners to the pros, here are a few surf spots to keep your toes on your nose

spot has the best tube rides available. It’s a speedy right that peaks over an outer reef and peels toward the beach.

Three Mile Primo reef break that is usually uncrowded, especially during weekdays. Named after the number of miles after Swift Street, it cops a great right line, particularly during a winter northwest swell. Three Mile, as with most North Coast spots south of Davenport, includes a long walk through Brussels sprouts fields that flank the ocean. Four Mile Here, locals tend to stare hard and long at newcomers. Because of its bluffprotected location, Four Mile isn’t affected (as much) by the afternoon summer winds as most spots on the North Coast. Reaches its full potential dur-

ing west, northwest 10-foot and above swells.

Scott’s Creek A potent combination of a beach and reef break, Scott’s dishes out about every challenge a surfer can handle. From long paddles and strong currents/rips to sharky waters and unpredictable peaks, Scott’s isn’t for the faint of heart or arms. But when it goes off, it’s heaven on water. Breaks best with a powerful north swell. Waddell Creek Similar conditions for Waddell Creek as for Scott’s, except during the summer and early fall Waddell is one of the world’s premier wind surfing (and now kite surfing) spots. Catch this right-breaking break early in the morning.
