BROADWAY

– STARS ALIGN FOR SPRING by Jane Klain

Jeremy Strong, Jessica Lange, Amy Ryan, Cecily Strong, Jim Parsons and Steve Carell are a few of the stars who will grace New York stages in the 18 new productions opening this spring.

S.E. Hinton’s revered 1967 coming-of-age classic and Francis Ford Coppola’s “The Outsiders” have been adapted into a new musical with a book by Adam Rapp with Justin Levine and music and lyrics by Jamestown Revival (Jonathan Clay and Zach Chance) and Levine. Set in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1967, the highly-anticipated musical pits narrator Ponyboy Curtis (Brody Grant), his best friend Johnny Cade (Sky Lakota-Lynch) and their Greaser

the diverse young cast -- mostly Broadway neophytes (as is Angelina Jolie, the lead producer) in the beloved tale of “friendship, family, belonging.” (Jacobs Theatre) https://outsidersmusical.com/

After an absence of 20 years, powerhouse singer Eden Spinosa returns to Broadway in the new musical, “Lempicka” which chronicles the nonconformist life of PolishLempicka. A witness to the century’s cultural

scandalous high-life in Paris when the Nazis invade, and ends her days in Los Angeles. Carson Kreitzer wrote the book and lyrics; Matt Gould wrote the book and music and Rachel Chavkin directs the cast which includes Beth Level as the Baroness.

Previews begin March 19. (Longacre Theatre) https://lempickamusical.com

Among the off-Broadway hits transferring to Broadway, “Suffs” earned its comparison to “Hamilton”: Like Lin-Manuel Miranda, Shaina Taub not only wrote the book, lyrics and music to “Suffs,” she also stars as real-life suffragist Alice Paul. The rousing “Suffs” traces the seven years leading up to the passage of the 19th Amendment in 1920 giving women the Federal right to vote. Leigh Silverman directs the spectacular cast, including Jenn Colella, Emily Skinner, Hannah Cruz, and Nikki M. James, who portray the determined activists who pioneered modern protest tactics. Previews begin March 26. (Music Box Theatre) https:// suffsmusical.com/

Another hit transfer from the Public Theater, “Hell’s Kitchen” features based on Key’s experiences growing up in New York’s Manhattan Plaza, is a plays a 17-year-old who rebels against her loving but overprotective mother down the house. Michael Greif directs with choreography by Camille A. Brown. Previews begin March 28. (Shubert Theatre) https://www.hellskitchen.com “Stereophonic,” featuring original songs by Will Butler (formerly of Arcade Fire), captures the “ecstasy of creation” as it recreates the world of a 1976 Sausalito music recording studio and the pressures on an up-and-coming rock band (loosely resembling Fleetwood Mac) on the cast. Previews begin April 2. (Golden Theatre) https://stereophonicplay.com/

SPORTS BEAT

Spring training has not been kind to the New York Mets when it comes to health, and 2024 was no different as the team’s ace pitcher, Kodai Senga, was diagnosed with arm fatigue from a shoulder exhibition game. The team announced he would not be ready to pitch on Opening Day, and they did not set a date for his return.

The Mets’ starting pitching is full of question marks, as free agent signings Luis Severino and Sean Manaea, are reclamation projects who the Mets are hoping can discover the form which made them dominant hurlers. The Mets must be crossing Tylor Megill, who of brilliance, can Jekyll and Hyde act, and be a consistent asset.

Consider the 2024 season totally lost if longtime farmhand Jose Butto is in the starting rotation. Whenever he has been called on to take the mound, he is pelted by opposing batters.

score of this year’s contest, 211-186, with the East defeating the West, shows. NBA commissioner

Basketball legend, TNT NBA studio show analyst, and sports greatest pitchman Shaquille O’Neal wisely combined two of his biggest endorsers, Pepsi-Cola, and Reebok, to create a new shoe, the Pepsi SNEAK’ER. No word if it is being made in Shaq’s 22 shoe size.

The Brooklyn Nets took advantage of the All-Star

Nets management tired of the team either being blown out of games or having fourth quarter meltdowns the rare times they held a lead. There were constant rumors he had lost the locker room. The Nets’ best player, Mikal Bridges, was especially livid following a 136-86 drubbing at the hands of the Boston Celtics, just before the All-Star Game break. Kevin Ollie replaced Vaughn. In his 29 points. I call that marked progress.

The Nets’ main problem is that while they have some talented players, they do not have any superstars. The NBA is a superstar-driven league. Every team has at least one. The Nets have none.

The Major League Soccer season is underway. The New York Red Bulls, who play in the beautiful Red Bull Arena in Harrison, NJ, have a new head coach, Sandro Schwarz. One of the team’s stars is defender Sean Nealis who grew up in Massapequa and graduated from Hofstra University.

Nealis told me he is a big Mets fan and is looking forward to his team playing the New York City Football Club at Citi Field on May 18. “I missed the game against NYCFC last year because I collected too many yellow cards!” he chuckled. Hopefully,

cut down on his penalties.

The Red Bulls may not be a championship team, but they are impressive where it really counts. Of course, I am talking about concession cuisine for fans. This year the team will be serving fun fare

Lacrosse has long been a popular sport on Long Island, so it was both surprising and disappointing to get a press release from the National Lacrosse League informing me that the New York Riptide, who play their home games at the Nassau Coliseum, would be relocating to Ottawa next season. An NLL media rep said the reason for the move was the uncertain future of the Nassau Coliseum.

Nothing against Canada’s beautiful capital city but moving a team from the New York City area to Canada’s fourth-largest city, tells you all you need to know about why the National Lacrosse League will always be smalltime. The Riptide did little to promote themselves on Long Island.

Using the Nassau Coliseum as an excuse is pure bull. There are plenty of open dates on the UBS Arena calendar. This year, the Professional Women’s Hockey League has a franchise playing there. They also play some home at Bridgeport, Connecticut’s TD Arena, which is also home to the New York

The Islanders, under the aegis of humorless GM Lou Lamoriello, wore stuffy business suits. It would have been nice if they had worn lifeguard slickers in honor of Long Island’s great beaches.

Deep Tropics Music Festival, widely recognized as the greenest festival in North America, has earned critical acclaim for the unparalleled festival experience while continuously producing climate positive editions year after year. Taking center stage on Friday is Grammy-award winning artist Kaskade performing a special Redux set in the Meru Amphitheatre. His Redux sets reveal a more profound and intimate sound that echoes the early days of Deep House and underground Electronic Music.

Genre defying artist RL Grime, whose innovative and boundary-pushing tracks have been described as exotic, massive and full of left-turns, will headtheir vibrant sound and community-driven ethos into a performance at Meru. From recent hit collaboration with Skrillex, to sold out Tennessee cave shows, there’s no doubt Peekaboo’s unique production, authentic sound, & magnetic energy will keep fans dialed in at the Lotus Stage on Saturday night.

Furthermore, there will be a Deep Culture Amphitheater Experience to kick off the second day of the festival on August 17th, featuring a transformative set curated by DJ Drez. From breathwork and yoga to meditation and dance, attendees will embark on a journey of self-discovery and connection.

Spring has arrived and with it comes a slew of events coming through NYC as this is a major touring time for artists before the music festival season begins. So strap in and get ready. First up we have the king of dubstep, Excision, bringing his Nexus Tour to the UBS arena on March 22. He’ll be supported by Ray Volpe, ATLiens, and Layz, bringing all sorts of heaviness to the arena. This tour steps up the game, even for Excision. All new visuals bring the viewer in depth to the music, with a new design to these visuals making many of them look 3D as if they were coming out of the screen at you. Mix that in with an obscene amount of lasers and you have yet another iconic Excision tour in a massive arena. There’s a reason why Excision has his own music festival and it’s because he knows how to curate his sets and experiences to exceed expectations every step of the way. For an exceptionally unique experience, everyone here should check out DJ_ Dave at Elsewhere in Brooklyn on March 23. She brings an ethereal house and techno feel to the stage and does so in a marvelous way; through editing code live

and It was fascinating. It brings a mix of computer nerd tech with encapsulating beats, all displayed right on the visual screen in front of you. The set was highly engaging as well and the music really got me going. This was a gem of a discovery and the more people who know, the better.

If you’re feeling more in the jam band vibes, The Disco Biscuits will be making a stop at Webster Hall on March 29 to bring all of their electronic and rock energy to the Big Apple. They bring an eclectic blend of sounds and genres together with their own take on what it means to be a jam band. These guys are one of my favorite jam bands because of how different they feel than a lot of the other bands and how they can keep the audience drawn into their performance with unique takes on popular classics as well as the plethora of music they’ve created themselves over the years.

It’s not every day you get to a see a DJ set take place in a church. Tchami wants to change that. The house king did a “once-in-a-lifetime” church set in Chicago last year and now wants to bring that same kind of event to others around the country. On April 11, Tchami will be stopping at the Angel Orensanz Foundation to truly take us to church in a way we never expected. Tchami’s iconic house music and brand become one, allowing concertgoers to dance the night away to

his hard hitting basslines and creative melodies. But that’s not all that he has in store…

Tchami and Malaa have just announced a new joint album “Veni, Vidi, Vici” which has been long awaited. These two are a dynamic duo that are often seen performing together and are friends through and through. Each having their own styles, together, their house music blends as one performer to bring pure epicness to the game. They are returning for their joint “No Redemption” show brand for a single show in Miami but we can be sure that once this album drops, there is a high chance there is another tour announced featuring both of them. This album is the culmination of many hours spent perfecting a dream and a vision. I can only imagine what it will be like, but I can guarantee it will be one for the ages. The album drops March 22 so make sure it’s on your radar to check it out.

That’s all for me this time and boy has it been a journey. Lots coming up in the next month so get ready for an epic spring. Feel free to reach out to me at richiegtechno@gmail.com with any comments or question. Until then, keep raging my friends!
