Memory Loss … Putting The Puzzle Pieces Together Thursday, June 7, 2007

Drees Pavilion – Devou Park

The focus of the 2007 symposium is memory loss. Fifty percent of all Americans over the age of 85 have some form of memory loss or dementia. Dementia greatly compromises quality of life, independence, relationships and economic stability. Alzheimer’s Disease is the most common of the dementias and is known as “The Long Good-Bye”. Join Fellow Alumni for Keeneland Horseracing and Florence Freedom Baseball Mission The Good Samaritan College of Nursing and Health Science identifies itself as a specialized college of higher education committed to educating men and women for careers in nursing and other health related fields in the greater Cincinnati region. The College is a private Catholic institution that fulfills its mission by addressing the needs of qualified students of differing interests, plans, expectations, and ages.

Two exciting Alumni events are coming up this summer and fall. I hope this edition of The Blue Streak finds each of you well and surviving the winter. I know we are all looking forward to spring. The College always has a full calendar this time of year with our Annual Fund Campaign, Spirit Olympics, Homecoming, and Graduation. You will find articles throughout the newsletter about these events. This year Good Samaritan College will celebrate its sixth birthday. Over the last six years, we have focused on ransitioning from a diploma program to college status and attaining our ccreditations as a college and nursing specialty. Having accomplished this, we are beginning a strategic planning process to guide the College through the next five years of development. I would like to share some of that process with you. The strategic plan is very important as it will establish the nitiatives we will pursue to further advance our College and fulfill our Mission, Vision, and Goals. To begin our planning process, we developed a “report card.” It details some of our accomplishments over the last five years and the evidence that we are striving to fulfill our mission. Please take a few minutes and go to our web site to take a look. (www.gscollege.edu/AboutGSC/ strategicPlan.aspx)

The alumni are a very important constituency of the College and are a critical part of determining our future.

Along with other constituencies, we have asked a representative group of alumni about the climate in which the College exists and operates. We also asked for information regarding the six priorities of the college. The six priorities of the College are based on the Baldridge National Quality Program Education Criteria for Performance Excellence and include: 1. Senior leadership creates a learning environment that encourages high performance and ethical behavior; 2. Planning efforts produce realistic and achievable strategies that are flexible and adaptable should circumstances warrant change; 3. GSC is a learning-focused institution; 4. GSC ensures organizational sustainability by determining and evaluating the requirements, expectations, and preferences of those it seeks to serve; 5. GSC is a learning-focused institution striving for continuous improvement; GSC maintains a high performance work environment conducive to performance excellence and the objectives of a learning-centered institution. The results of our constituency ssessment will be reported to our Board of Trustees. The board will then develop our new strategic plan over the next few months. We will publish our strategic planning decisions in the next edition of The Blue Streak. Sincerely,

The Blue Streak is published three times per year by the Alumni Services Staff.

Spring will be here before we know it. How time flies! I attended a funeral recently for 2003 graduate Lisa Limerick. She was a former student of mine. She was a lovely young woman whose life was snuffed out in the prime of her life. It made me stop to consider how we, as nurses, touch people during the happiest, the saddest and the most intimate moments of their lives. Conversely, those same people touch us in very profound ways. I realize that life goes on whether we choose to actively participate or not. When I look back over the years (and the older I get the faster the years go), I hope I will see myself as a participant and not just an observer. With spring just around the corner, consider turn-

ing over a new leaf - participate and grow in the Alumni Association. There are so many things to do – socially, educationally, and philanthropically. Reunion 2007 will take place on Saturday, April 28th, at the Marriott RiverCenter. It will be a wonderful opportunity to connect with classmates and friends. I hope to see many of you at this year’s event. In June, we’ll spend the day on the topic of memory during the annual Nancy Powell Symposium. In the summer, we’ll have a Florence Freedom professional baseball family outing; and in October, the Alumni Association is sponsoring a trip to beautiful Keeneland Racetrack near Lexington, Kentucky. Those are just a few of the events coming up.

Alumni Annual Fund Campaign 2007 Goal - $110,000 Traditions and Transitions - 110 Years of Touching Lives

Margaret Hiltz Weaver ‘74 2007 Annual Fund Chairperson The days of winter are a perfect time to get organized and take stock of what is mportant to us. This is also a great time to reflect on what has shaped our lives and to plan for the future. The Alumni Association Annual Fund Committee was thinking along these lines when they developed the theme of this year’s campaign: Traditions and Transitions - 110 Years of Touching Lives. Good Samaritan has graduated more than 6,000 highly skilled and compassionate nurses, like you, who have touched millions of lives! Now it’s time to plan for our future nurses so they can continue this wonderful tradition! The fund provides much-needed scholarships, assists faculty development and supports Alumni Association activities. You have received a solicitation brochure and letter and possibly a Phonathon call urging you to donate. I hope you remember some of the lives you have been able to touch and I hope you will help our student nurses have those same opportunities. If you haven’t already donated, please help us reach our 2007 goal of $110,000 with 3

Scholarship Created in Memory of Lisa Limerick ‘03 Lisa Limerick ‘03 passed away January 25, 2007, after a valiant fight with breast cancer. Lisa will be remembered for her easy, beautiful smile, her great sense of humor and her love of animals and the outdoors. She was an avid motorcyclist. Lisa's passion for nursing was insatiable. She cherished her days as a student at Good Samaritan College and enjoyed the challenges and rewards of being a staff nurse at Good Samaritan Hospital. She always showed dignity and respect to everyone she met. Lisa's departure leaves a great void. A scholarship fund for GSC students is being established in her memory. The effort is being spearheaded by two of her classmates, Paula Minning and Heidi Lamkin. Nurses Ranked Most Ethical Profession by the Public The public continues to view nursing as the nation’s most honest and ethical profession according to the latest Gallup Poll. For the eighth straight year, nurses topped Gallup’s list of occupations rated for their honesty and ethical standards, earning high marks from more than four in five Americans surveyed in December, 2006. Placing 2nd and 4th were pharmacists and doctors, rated highly by 73% and 69% of Americans, respectively. Car salesmen anchored the list with just 7% of Americans rating their ethics highly.
