Kinsley’s Secret Stash

Iwas finally able to get my first Covid-19 vaccination at a Walmart on East Brainard Road in Chattanooga. The day I was supposed to go ended up being a morn with black ice on the roads, so I rescheduled my appointment for later in the morning. Of course, I was able to take my sidekick with me due to her school’s being on winter break.
We made our way up I-75, turned onto the East Ridge exit, and passed by Parkridge East Women’s Hospital, where Kinsley was born in 2013. We talked about how tiny she was at her birth and laughed a bit until we crossed the bridge that crossed over I-24. The bridge was under construction, so we had to stop, and as I looked around, I saw lots of tents in the woods on the east side of the road, and I told Kinsley what those tents were all about.
It was a very cold morning, the temperatures were in the mid-20s, and as I drove off, this is what I heard from the back seat: “Poppy, next time, we will bring my stash.” I asked her, “What do you mean, your secret stash?” She said, “You know, my secret stash of money; next time we come up here, we will bring it.” I was a bit shocked and asked her again, “Why?”
She wanted to give it to the homeless people. I was a bit surprised because she has a little “secret stash” of money, and it is her money. She did not ask me to spend my money on the homeless; she wanted to spend her very own money. Kinsley’s love language is gifts—it does not matter the size or the cost—and she just loves receiving gifts. So for her to use her money and spend it on people whom she does not even know warmed my heart.
Once again, I felt tears in my eyes and was wondering how I was going to walk into Walmart to get my vaccine with teary eyes. The world needs more random acts of kindness. There was a song many years ago that was sung by Dionne Warwick that goes, “What the world needs now is love, sweet love.” There is not enough love in this world, is there? In the coming days, I will be helping Kinsley gather up some things to help out those homeless men and women. Love is not a noun: it is a verb, it is an action, and we need more love in action. I have been preaching and pastoring since 1979, and I have learned more from this 8-yearold girl than I could have learned from years in a seminary or a Bible college. Do you have a “Secret Stash?” If you do, maybe you should look around and look with eyes of love, hoping you can find something or someone to use your “Secret Stash” on. Love is a verb, so put it into action. I know I will!
