It Was The One Who Armed Man!

Almost any instance of miscommunication in our house can be traced back to Rebekah. Her hearing is fine, I promise. It’s just selective. Each member of our family is a movie buff. As a matter of fact, there are countless instances of speaking in movie lines. Someone will quote a movie line as part of their normal speech pattern, and the rest of us are required to know what movie it came from and which character spoke the line. I know it sounds goofy, but we actually are a little goofy.

Needless to say, little Rebekah (then around 5) tried her hand at this family act as well. She waited for the perfect opportunity, and presto chango, she was a true-blue Gambrell. Someone (as usual) had done something to get chastised for. There were too many of these events to recall, and it doesn’t matter what it was. Eventually, someone blamed Rebekah, and she responded with, “It wasn’t me; it was the one who armed man.” For those of you who missed the hilarity of that line, we had recently viewed the movie “The Fugitive,” where the main character is charged with the murder of his wife. His famous retort was, “It wasn’t me; it was the one-armed man!” We tried unsuccessfully to control our laughter, and we still repeat her misspoken quote to this day. Relax—it’s all in fun!

When I reflected on her quote, however, it became an empowering thought. Jesus is the “One who armed Man.” He arms us with every weapon we need to overcome the world, the flesh, and the devil. He is our armory, and the tools are ever ready at our disposal.

Ephesians 6:16-18: “Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery

darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints.”

Father God, may we not let our weapons rust in the closet. Each day is filled with warfare, and each day, our weapons must be at the ready. We thank You today and every day that You have given us the gift of Your Son: “the One who armed Man.” Amen.
