Finding Our Way Back

Iwas a big fan of the show “Touched By An Angel” back in the ’90s. There was one episode that really made a lasting impression on me. An angel was sent to earth on a mission to help someone, as always, but in the process, she forgot she was an angel after taking on human form. She got caught up in the trouble of the people she came to help. When Tess and Monica, the two angels the series revolves around, came to rescue the angel, they found her completely unaware of who she was. When they reminded her of where she came from and that she was an angel (cue lighting

and sound effects), Heaven’s light came beaming down and illuminated the darkened surroundings as well as her mind! She then said, “All this time, I forgot who I was and I couldn’t find my way back home.”

Isn’t that the way all of us have felt at one time or another? We jump off the path that the Lord has for our lives, and we become complacent about doing His will, opting to do what we want instead. Before long, we “lose” ourselves to the pull of this life, forgetting our true mission and why we were sent here. To clarify, I’m not saying we aren’t saved anymore: just that we lose our way for a bit, much like the Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-32). James 1:23-24 says, “Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.” God’s Word is the mirror that we must look into daily so that we do not forget who we are in Christ. It is our road map to the way home, our eternal home, and a guidebook for how to maneuver this life. Our mission, as Christ’s followers, is to spread the Good News of who Jesus is and point others to Him. We can’t accomplish the mission if we aren’t saturating ourselves with His Word and then walking it out in our daily lives. I get bogged down by the cares of this life and all the baggage that comes with it. That’s when I need my Christian brothers and sisters to lift me up and point me back in the right direction. We all need each other to love and believe in us and to make us accountable for our actions.

Our journey here on this Earth is certainly not a bed of roses at times; that’s when we have to lean into Him, read the Word of God more voraciously, and depend on our Christian family. We need to pray for and, at times, help each other find our way back to the right path and remind us who we are in Christ.
